This may sound a bit stupid, but my knowledge of this kinda thing isnt good, but how come in the 60's when Ali was called up to go to war in vietnam guys like Joe Frazier and other top contenders werent? How does it work?

Back then there was a draft number, from 1 to 365 I believe. If you had a number closer to 365, you were less likely to be called. If you had a lower number, you were more likely to be called. My guess is that some other fighters like Frazier had high numbers. Frazier was also the sole supporter for his family.
Ali originally didn't qualify after he took the test, but the military re-classified him later on and said he was eligible to be called to duty.

I think somewhere I heard that Frazier was called but he had kids and was the sole supporter of his family, hence he didn't have to go.
