Good work Rooster.

Thats some bad karma Joe copped.

First he is involved in the greatest trilogy in boxing history and is almost anonymous outside fight fans. The guy he fought goes on to become the most famous boxer in history.

Then the greatest boxing movie series in history is based on him and no one knows outside fight fans. The character inspired by him becomes the most famous boxer in movie history.

He gets a walk on part in the film - "But Stallone never paid me for none of my past. I only got paid for a walk-on part. Rocky is a sad story for me."

To cap it off, the time they make a movie about Ali - Ali gets played by the most successful actor in movie history - Will Smith.

Frazier gets played by James Toney.

---

Some footage of better times when Ali and Frazier got along.

So why did many years later Stallone pay Chuck Wepner some money and say he was the inspiration for the movie.

Stallone was ringside for Ali-Wepner and I've heard many times that was where he got the inspiration for Rocky. Yes there were elements borrowed from Fraziers life but he certainly wasn't the main inspiration.

Good point and who knows.

Maybe Stallone felt he had already paid Joe when he employed him on the film.

This would be a great question for Stallone if he makes it through oz customs again.

I imagine there were a lot of influences and Stallone has publicly credited both Chuck and Joe Frazier as inspirations.

Chuck Wepner inspired one part of Rocky - the underdog unknown contender and bad bleeder takes a savage beating from the champ and wins respect of all. No doubt the lightbulb moment for Rocky was Stallones attending the Wepner fight which triggered him to write the screenplay.

I think the unique and real essence of Rocky - locating it in Fraziers hometown of Philly, copying Joes runs up the stairs and beef carcass punching bags. That was pure Joe Frazier and unique and what separates Rocky from hundreds of boxing movies.

Personality wise Chuck and Joe were very similar no nonsense style and were twins in how they handled Ali in public. Chuck's verbal counterpunching in this interview is outstanding.

No doubt Chuck is right in the mix and if you were ringside for this fight, seeing him knock Ali down in the 9th and willing him off the canvas in Round 15 it would indeed be inspirational.

Round 15 - Ali v Chuck Wepner

The Rocky film was pretty much inspired by one thing.. Wepners 'shock' knock down of Ali.. if you'd call it a knock down.. On that alone, there should have been a Mundine/Geale II.

Joe Frazier's inclusion in the original film was based on Apollo's own character being Ali based.. albeit, PRO American.. "You're next Joe..".. Go figure.

Rocky II - XIIV were based on the financial dreams of resembling Rocky's original taking's and Stallone's wish to show off his 5' 6" 'roided body.
