Takase over A. Silva... Sokodjou over Noguiera... better choices, IMO.

I think Serra over GSP was an upset of Tyson/Douglas proportions in the MMA world. There have been other shockers over the years such as Nino over Sakuraba, Petruzelli over Kimbo, Smith over Le - but none as shocking as Sera's KO of the seemingly invincible GSP. BJ Penn over Hughes shouldn't be on there because there were plenty of us that knew Penn was coming home with the gold that night!

GSP-Serra is sure up there.
But the way CC lost...DAMN.

The way CC lost like Quebec said was crazy but I thought there was a strong chance Gonzaga would win but because of his grappling not his striking. Serra over GSP like Sugar said is Tyson-Douglas I mean Serra was always a good fighter but could not quite get over the hump agianst high level fighters his only chance may have been BJJ but it would be hard to submitt GSP at the time and Serra had a big height disadvantage. Lets face it Serra had a zero percent chance and he won. The crowd was in disbelief, the announcers, Dana White, ESB, me, Serra, GSP everyone was like HOLY SHIT.

Alot of those losses in hindsight aren't so bad for numerous reasons. Serra vs GSP is still shocking in hindsight cos GSP is such a badarse.
GSP showed in the rematch what a maestro he is.

I would agree with Serra vs GSP; even Tyson vs Douglas sort of makes sense in retrospect, Serra vs GSP 1 just looks stranger and stranger as time goes on.

Probably CC's losses to Randleman and Gonzaga. No one saw either one coming. CC looked awesome off the back of the OWGP and everyone though the UFC title had his name on it. So did CC... Much like the Randleman bout he took his opposition way to lightly and paid the price.

I think Serra v. GSP takes it.

I think Serra v. GSP takes it.
yea because the people in the other upsets mentioned were either past greats or great fighters who didnt look good there last couple fights.
Serra had 0 signature wins going into the GSP fight, and was a basic nobody. Randleman and Griffin were already established fighters. Gonzaga fits the bill too because he didnt have any name recognition going into his CC fight.

How about Royce Gracie quitting after his match against Kimo in UFC 3?
That was pretty epic at the time.
Well as many have already mentioned, the Serra vs. GSP is one of the most shocking considering results. As for the Gonzaga is was even more shocking imo because of not from just the result but the cause of it. Gonzaga used Crocop's signature move that Crocop demolished so many opponents with to finish off Crocop himself! Who the hell could see that coming?

Mir V Noguiera
It would have been more shocking if Nog was in his prime. Plus Nog was kind of an idol to Mir, and usually that meant Mir studies Nog and knows him quite well while fixing up his fight plan.

I gave Mir a 2 / 100 chance of beating Nog.. that must have been 1 of the 2

I guess it would be most shocking for you then. I would factor in his transition from ring to cage, his age, and in MMA pretty any fight between a great and even just a good fighter the odds will never be as bad as 50:1.

The manner in which Gonzaga defeated Crocop was shocking - but several folks had Gonzaga picked to win based on his submission skills. No one gave Serra a chance to defeat GSP - even me. Then I picked Matt to repeat and that didn't quite go as expected.
Its never an upset when Kimbo loses.
That's what I was thinkin too, the guy was only there because of his looks and beating up nobodys on youtube I mean seriously...

GSP/Serra is a little overblown I think. Big upset? Yes. But GSP was not considered invincible back then as he is now. And if I'm not mistaken he may have even been the underdog in his previous fight, the rematch against Hughes.

Serra over GSP.

Serra over GSP and Gonzaga over Cro-Cop take the cake here, I think. But I've only seen ONE other person mention Griffin-Rua, that was HUGE for Forrest. It'll be even bigger in retrospect considering how good Rua looked against Machida and if he does well in the rematch.

Aurelio over Gomi was pretty shocking to me.

I gave Serra a chance against GSP.
He did'nt have the record of a fighter who had never achieved anything or been untested.
He was a proven, world class fighter.
Cro Cop was a much bigger upset because of the way he lost.
