Not sure why this is, but it does seem somewhat true. May be because they are in the inside that they aren't as much fans of the sport as much as it's a job.

you'll find that in a lot of sports. I used to play soccer all the fucking time, but hated watching it. And I made the high school all star team. To me it was much more enjoyable to play than to watch.

Because there is a fundamental difference between talking and performing. Professionals hit the gym 5+ days/week for a couple of hours and work their ass off. I dont see how it would improve their game if they become certified [Only registered and activated users can see links]

The best boxers have a knowledge and understanding of those who came before them.
Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Tyson, Hopkins, these guys all knew boxing history well, which helped them to perform on the higher level.
Consider Jermain Taylor, he said he rarely watches boxing and prefers watching other sports. I don't find it surprising that he can't seem to improve his game past what it is at right now. By watching shorter fighters beat taller fighters on tapes and studying it, Tyson learned to deal with being naturally shorter than his opponents, etc..

No one knows more about boxing than posters on internet message boards, who are boxers to compare to these internet warriors?

There is no proof that knowing boxing history helped them to perform on the higher level, their athleticism, boxing skills and their trainers were responsible for their success. There are countless champs who have not seen thousands of video tapes nor do they browse boxing sites daily and still they achieved a lot. Video studying your next opponent could help though.

This reminds me of a KO Magazine interview with Erik Morales (Judah was on the cover, it was about boxing and hip-hop).
The interviewer was talking with Morales about his place in history among Mexican greats. When Salvador Sanchez was brought up, Morales asked what Sanchez did. The interviewer said he beat Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson. Morales goes "he beat Azumah Nelson?"
Morales knows a lot about fighting as he's been boxing basically his whole life, but obviously boxing history is not his strongpoint.

Not only that, but it doesn't seem like many boxers are even fans of the sport. I'm always surprised when fighters can't remember the names of other fighters.

You've totally missed the point of the post.
It's not about getting on the net and talking boxing. It's that a lot of boxers don't even having a basic understanding of the history of the sport.

I don't know mayn. You have the Tysons of the boxing world who can be considered not only fans, but also historians of the sport.. and then you get guys like former heavyweight champ Michael Moorer who say they're not even fans of the sport, and don't pay attention to it at all.
I really don't get it, how can you participate in a sport and yet not even be a fan of it? That shit just doesn't make sense to me.
Moore actually said that? Hard to believe since he pops up often on wed & friday night fights on ESPN. He's usually in the audience as a spectator and Teddy Atlas usually brings him up for a couple of quick words or his thoughts on the fight.

It's these guys job, and alot of guys invest all their "give a shit about boxing" into their own careers.
Can you really blame them, do you go on message boards and watch youtube highlights of your job?
There are of course guys who are just as big as fans as anybody else, but some guys take the approach of it being strictly a career.

Exactly......why even let the moronic athletes compete when those of us who are knowledgable and who truly carry the sport should determine the contenders, champions, ATG and P4Pers over these forums. Why even watch the fights or buy the PPV? With the exception of De LaHoya every boxer is either a bum, is shot or should retire anyway.

i dont know, i mean..i aint downing them, i just find it weird most of the time......
but it's true i guess, when your a full time boxer, you dont wanna watch fights or read about it, you just wanna fight....
i can say, that all my fighter friends have never watched a fight with me...and i've invited them over many, many, i mean , MANY fucken times...but they'd rather be out and about at casinos and clubs....while im stuck watching shobox or telefutura fights...ahahahahaaahahahahha

its a self protection thing. imagine you are a talented....but not overly talented welterweight.
and you would be aware of the fact that if you ever want to make it out of the favela, you have to beat berto or cintron or margo and so on in two weeks.
you think you could still sleep and enjoy life. dont think so.

motivation only goes so far. if your average fighter has only a slight sense of reality, then life is pretty bleak for them.
anyways, you a pro fighter??

You take what I said, then draw a bunch of conclusions I said nothing about. I never said someone had to watch thousands of tapes, nor did I say their athleticism, boxing skills, or their trainers had nothing to do with their success. I never said they had to browse boxing sites at all, much less daily. Proof would be asking them, as Tyson is on record saying he would learn from his sessions with his handlers, watching old tapes of fighters to learn what he could.
Take two fights, A and B, all things equal mentally and physically, then add that fighter A has studied how he might match up with B by watching tapes of fighters similar to him against fighters similar to B. A is more likely to have an established and workable gameplan entering the fight. My money would be on A to win.

Many golfers analyze how Tiger plays to try and teach themselves to become better. Poker players analyze the tapes of their fellow poker players to give themselves an edge at the table, and for the simply instructional purposes of learning how the top players do what they do.

Because most boxers arn't too bright and think past fights or fighters have nothing to do with them and the modern game.

Depends on the boxers I guess. Hopkins, Toney (even though he doesn't say anything intelligent most of the time), Pbf, Klitschko, Hatton and more do know a lot about boxing and its history.
I remember about 3 years ago the Klitchkos were really impressed They had just seen a video of Sugar Ray Robinson FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! :admin
Mayweather - yes seemingly
Toney/BHOPs - absolutely
Hatton - big Duran fan
Tyson - big historian
Ali - big SRR fan
Lennox - still a fan of the sport, history wise Im unsure

you cant say that, the fight as be4 his team probably. Im a fan but I can admitt that I dont kno as much info as probably you or other veteran posters on here about the olden days b/c its be4 my time, I do some research and learn from posters on here, and watch youtube, but for somr1 that wasnt alive back in the day its almost impossibe for you to kno as much on that era as some1 whow as around in that time. So you cant discredit floyd if he didnt kno, prolly didnt care to ask.

i know man, i feel'ya....i'm only 24 years old, and anything before about 1990, i just watch with joy and dont really comment on it...i take what i can from people who are older than me as knowledge....i'll be damned if some 24 yr old punk in 2026 tries to argue with me about the 90's era of boxing
but take rappers for example....they study the art in and out, just wondering why most boxers dont.....

I honestly dont kno, but its mostly the older rappers that study the game from the 80's till now or even 70's b/c they can see how the game is changing. THe new artists are like you and I who there time was a young Jay-Z, a young Nas, etc. They would have to go buy old albums to get caught up on the 80's.
Same with you my era is the 1990's so I kno more about that as oppose to the older ages. I learned somethings from what my father and grandfather told me about older fighters. But I will never be as knowledgable as some1 who lived during the time to experience it

I can't agree with this really. I get what your saying but, for people like that (me being one), where we work is not a hobby. It's not a sport. It dosen't capture the imagination of millions of people worldwide and make us into icons because were brilliant at it.
Fair enough if boxers don't watch fights the whole time or have a boxrec type of knowledge about the sport.
But to be a fighter and not a fan:huh
That's fucked up

A lot of athletes are only interested in fast cars and fast woman. They may often be very smart but just not interested in scientific things at all. They are missing out though because boxing is the best sport to understand human behaviour.
