They're really saying that?
Yeah, Smoger was in his way for the whole 2 minutes it took for Jermain to get to his feet.

I don't know about any of that. But in my opinion Jermaine should have taken a knee after he took that first big shot, then he could have gathered himself and got out of the round. Instead several follow up uppercuts did him in, Pavlik had him dead to rights in the corner.

Jermain has limited ring intelligence. Don't ever expect him to make "smart" moves in the ring. He just does what his ability will allow him to do, but he can't make in-the-moment adjustments because he panics so badly.

If the camera wasn´t invented, they would say that Smoger was standing on his balls.

I havent seen anyone use that excuse. And if they did, its all to rile up the Pavlik fans. Taylor was in no way, shape, or form going to be able to continue after that onslaught by Pavlik.

Or just taken a knee instead of retreating into the corner.

I belive Taylor could have goting up. Dont know what good it would have done, as he was close to being out, but it would have been a few more movments for Kelly to beat up on Taylor for the knockout or stoppage.

 That's bullshit. Taylor was too out of it to do anything. His eyes were glassy and he wasn't full coherent until a minute or so after the stoppage.

taylor was out on his feet. i dont think he was aware that he was on the canvas, judging by the blank look on his face. he could'nt have gotten up

And when he was coherent again, I believe he asked if he was KO'ed while he was still taking a seat. His people nodded in agreement.

When you have to ask whether you were knocked out, you were Knocked the fuck OUT.Exactly he was out and a 10 count would have done nothing to help

i don't think taylor's a hype job, but there are a lot of hatters out there who don't want to give pavlik any credit.

If Taylor "had" gotten up, a 6'-3" Pavlik would have tried to pile drive a
right hand out the back of JT's head.
JT was helpless, and it could have turned into a very ugly night.

Did Smoger actually stop the fight before Taylor hit the canvas?
I think Smoger might have, and thus the reason why Smoger was right almost on top of Taylor, possibly inhibiting Taylor to make a move to get up if he could.
If Smoger stopped the fight before Taylor hit the canvas, I'm fine with the job that he did as a referee.
......but if he decided to stop the fight after Taylor had gone to the canvas......Taylor is already on the canvas, why not give him a count to see if he responds to it?
It would'nt have mattered in this fight imo, but in some circumstances a fighter looks out of it on the way down, and seconds later is clear enough to get up and even make a fight out of it.
Smoger's knee lay right on front of Taylor's face, and Smoger was'nt even looking at Taylor's face to determine his condition as he was waving the fight off.....thats why I'm of the inclination that Smoger had made a determination to stop it before Taylor had hit the canvas.

Taylor was stunned by the uppercut and he would have been badly beaten had he continued. Smogger may have been in his way, in his way of being f----d up!

a couple things:
1. taylor will never be considered a smart fighter. one of the reasons i was backing kelly. he simply refuses to listen to anyone and instead rely on his great atheletic abilities.
2. when you get THAT hurt, thinking logically in a short span of time while your brain is sparked is easier said than done. jermain was in no mental condition to think of the sensible thing to do. he was in pure confusion, and instinctively covered up which is only natural in that situation. plus it was the first time jermain has ever been that hurt. if he had been ko'ed previously or at least hurt pretty bad and gotten off the deck to win, then yes, he might have done the logical thing. but since he's never experienced that kind of hurt before, he simply was clueless.
3. to prove how damaging those shots were, taylor was semi concious when his head was resting against the rope. smoger like any ref with experience saw zero movement. when a fight is that relaxed and saggy, it's a good sign he isn't going to get up for at least a few minutes. and as shown afterwards, taylor asked if he had been ko'ed.
i dont blame taylor for not taking a knee, nor for smoger calling off the count. that is about as decisiive as you can get in a win, short of the "stiff as a board" collapse forward/backward.

I was saying the exact same thing. He could of took a knee and possibly made it out of the round. Probably wouldnt have changed the outcome though. Kelly did not look like he was getting tired.

I agree. In all the coverage I have seen and read of that fight I have heard no one make that excuse and I haven't even heard it on a message board until this thread.

Obviously the thread starter is the one making this up.
Go on you-tube and watch the post fight press conference--they ask jermain point blank if he thinks the fight should have been stopped and he said" The ref did a great job--he did what he was supposed to do"
Theres no complaining in that sentence nor is there any way he is saying it shouldnt have been stopped---jermain himself is glad the fight got stoppped so this thread is just your way of trying to make an excuse when even your fighter isnt.
