View Full Version : DeGale: “I’d love to knock the silly ugly ginger kid out!”

GladiatoR
02-04-2010, 10:28 PM
James DeGale has responded to George Groves' fight offer saying he'd be happy to take the fight, and that it would be a "pleasure to get in the ring with him and knock him out." DeGale told the Sun newspaper’s Gavin Glicksman: "The silly little ginger kid, well, what I say is go and speak to my promoter as I'll box anyone Frank puts in front of me.
"I'd like to fight Groves and stick him 10 spaces back in his career, if he really wants that, because he'd get knocked out.
"So speak to my promoter and we'll get it on — sooner rather than later.
"I'd love to knock the ugly ginger kid out!"
Groves' trainer Adam Booth said yesterday he felt there was no better place for the two rising super-middleweight stars to settle their old rivalry than on the same bill as David Haye's WBA world heavyweight title defence against John Ruiz at Manchester’s M.E.N Arena on 3 April.
"You can't get a bigger stage than a world heavyweight championship fight," he said.
"Not only will the world's media be watching, but Groves and DeGale would also box in front of a sold-out crowd at the MEN Arena. There would be plenty of incentive for both men.
"George doesn't want to wait and risk the fight never happening - he wants to meet DeGale as soon as possible and he wants to do it on the biggest stage possible."
Olympic gold medallist DeGale seems to echo that view, saying, "We could wait until further down the line, but I'd rather just get it over and done with."
He was also keen to stress he feels Groves didn't deserve to win their fight in the amateurs, adding; "Robbed, robbed, robbed, he robbed me. It was a close competitive fight but I should have won.
"But as I say, that was in the amateur days and we're pros now. I'm coming on leaps and bounds and it'll be my pleasure to get in the ring with him and knock him out."
The war of words looks set to rumble on then, and fans will now have to wait and see if the rivals' promoters can agree a deal.

If it was close and competetive how the hell does that constitute a robbery?

Groves looked awful for awhile in his last fight. I am not on the hype yet. His opponents have been a joke so far so too early to tell if he is really 'that' good.

Ditto De Gale too :good

And DeGale wonders why people don't like him. DeGale's attempts to create a 'bad boy' persona are cringeworthy; at least Tyson Fury can pull it off as he's genuinely funny. DeGale's happy slaps won't touch the Saint. Easy work for Groves, IMO. If it doesn't happen now or at British level then the fight will never happen as Groves is a step above DeGale and is going to higher places, IMHO.

That said, the very fact Degale's pissing people off is good news for him as we're all talking about him.

Like I said in another thread, we need personalities like DeGale in boxing - gets people excited about this fight against Groves, and he will be the one selling the fight if it does get made (which it should do.... in 2-4 years time!).

Having said that, Haye was criticised on here for calling Valuev "ugly", so I don't see why a prick like DeGale should be 'spared' from the criticism :yep

Indeed. But, to be fair to Haye, by that stage you have to remember that he was a former European, WBA, WBC, WBO, Ring and Lineal champ at CW. All in just a measly 20-odd fights.

I personally am not a DeGale hater, but I can see why others can't stand him.

Lee Mc

This would be a VERY easy fight for Groves in my opinion.

He'd pick Degale off all throughout the fight and would win an embarrassingly easy decision. Hence the reason it will never take place.

Whats the difference between hair colour and skin colour ??? If Groves was to react to these comments himself with an immature remark about DeGales personal appearance then the press would be up in arms. I hope Groves gets him in a ring as soon as and puts a stop to this chunky train before its gets to super WBA International/Intrim status. TWAT

A third round stoppage of a bigger man ho he knocked down a total of 3 times is poor? He made a slow start in the 1st but I don't think he's on the downhill slide just yet lol.

Groves has replied today saying he doesn't think the fight will happen:

Unfortunately for Groves it doesn't matter whether he thinks Degale is out of touch with people or not worth "50 quid" because the fact is the guy is earning closer to 100grand per fight. So why on earth would he agree to take half his usual purse to help promote another guy with less of a name than him in the general public?

Dan684

Strike you moron. That isn't the difference between colours that is a difference between peoples perceptions. It's still a childish, personal comment aimed at mocking someone for their appearance and if the shoe was on the other foot then people would be in uproar.

No difference in reality. Still a FACTUAL childish comment

I am amazed you cannot see that the historical and social context of an insult or slur is of significance. The word "****" is not racist in Australia because it has only ever been used as an abbreviation for the cricket team. It is not as a word intrinsically offensive or racist. However to use it in the UK would outline you as a racist because it is rooted in the far right activities of the 70s and 80s and was used as a vitriolic slur by people who targeted the Asian community.

So yes the historical context of using a slur about a persons colour and one about the colour of their hair is hugely different and thus one is far more offensive than the other and one carries much graver connotations.

If that is impossible for you to grasp, then I'd suggest that it is you who qualifies as a "moron".

Degale has no chance against Groves, George is a far more complete fighter than Degale will ever be. Degale fights like hes still a amateur, I don't know how anyone can rate him, personally I think he would struggle to even with a British title.
