I think Hopkins is smart enough to know who he can and can't beat at this point in time and what type of fighter he should and shouldn't get in the ring with.

It's not about making mistakes, its about the youth and reach. Looking back it is a pretty bold statement in saying that Hopkins will be put away, but this fight just has bad news written all over it. I bet Hopkins has averaged at about 50 punches per round in his last fight. No way could he hack would Pavlik brings. Even if he did throw a higher volume of punches than in his last fights, he is only wasting more energy than he is use to. I just don't see how he could walk away with a W against Pavlik. If he fights the way he has been for the past few years it won't be enough, and if he throws more punches than usual it would be asking too much from his 40+ year old body IMO.
The reasons why I thought Hopkins had trouble with Taylor was because of the youth, speed, and size. He knew that if he would had turned it up a notch he would have gotten hurt or caught with something. He had to pace himself more than ever in those two Taylor fights. Pavlik only emphasizes this theory.

The reason Pavlik had a high out put against Taylor is because Taylor elected to box ..Against Hopkins it be a lead right then a hold over and over again ..Hopkins is crafty as hell he has the ability to take a fighter jab away as well as frustrate them ..Unless Hopkins eventually gets slowed down by father time I don't see how the Ghost beats him ..

I think people are being a little too optimisitic about Hopkins right now. I think a young and active fighter can definitely beat Hopkins. That's his cryptonite right now because that will keep him at bay somewhat. JT is a perfect example of that. Just JT's activity alone kept Hopkins from coming forward in some rounds.
Hopkins is great right now but not against every type of fighter IMO. He needs to fight guys who are slower and have a low work rate so he can pick his spots.

If Pavlik continues on his current path, there is a very good chance that he'll be an ATG. This is especially true after he crushes Kessler.

As much as i would like to see Hopkins get beat for all the boring fight he has put us through i think he would dominate Pavlik. He is so damn crafty. you know he is not going to stand straight in front of him and brawl he is gonna clinch his way to a victory and just frustrate Pavlik.

Hopkins at 42 im sure knows his limitations, a 25 yr old kid with an iron jaw and an insane workrate would be to much to overcome, Hops is fearless so don't rule it out, he's also never been stopped, so IF it does happen you can't help to see the old man suffer a 1 sided beating, and a lopsided decision defeat..:deal

PAvlik will not jump 2 divisions to fight BHOP. He will likely get embarrased, and he is too damn young.
WIth regards to him having too much youth and reach, that's exactly what people said about Taylor and we see how well that worked out for Taylor against BHOP(bogus decisions aside).
BHOP UD 12 Pavlik. Pavlik's lack of footwork will be his demise.

Your insane bro.
One- Hopkins is the best defensive fighter alive (arguably). Pavlik AINT knockin him out.
Two- Hopkins chin is STEEL. Pavlik AINT knockin him out.
Three- The fight would be held above 160. In all probability at LHW. Hopkins is more used to that weight...and when ya move up in weight, you inevitably lose a bit on your power....SO.... Pavlik AINT knockin him out.
Four- And seriously, with a KO out of the question....who really in their right mind would pick Pavlik by decision?
Like I said, Pavlik AINT knockin him out.

At middleweight or even supermiddlweight, Pavlik KO's Hopkins.
It's the only way he knows how to fight.

Hopkins beats Pavlik. Pavlik is getting so much kudos for is win over Taylor at the moment I think people are losing their normal perspective in assessing his actual potential. While his victory was very impressive he almost got KO'd himself.
Hopkins is crafty and if workrate alone and a good jab were enough to beat Hopkins now, even at this late stage in his career, Wright would have already done it. Hopkins mobility and defensive skills would not give Pavlik the same opportunities to set his usual high workrate. And even when Pavlik gets into a position to unload Hopkins would smother his attack.

Hopkins gave up reach and height against Taylor.
He's not gettin any younger. Unless he takes Pavlik out quickly, he's gonna get knocked out.
Pavlik is a slow starter and Hopkins is faded.

Yes, but you pick Hopkins over Kessler, who's a level above both Taylor and Pavlik, that's where this just becomes absurd.

I might reconsider my opinion.
I'll watch him fight Calzaghe before I comment on this again.
He has a high enough workrate, reach, and power.
Yeah, Kessler has a good chance to beat a 42 year old Hopkins.
What seperates Kessler from Pavlik though, is that Pavlik has more power, is a better finisher, has a higherwork rate and I think he has a more diverse arsenal.
Will Kessler keep Hopkins at range: Of course
Will he throw a good uppercut at him when he comes in to clinch? :think

Kessler has a more diversified offense is MUCH, MUCH faster than Pavlik with better timing and a world class defence, something Pavlik does not have at all. Kessler also has a superior jab with more snap.
It's not even comparable, what are you watching Caps?:admin

Pavlik looks stronger at 160. At 175, his power will not be what it is now. With Hopkins chin and defense, it will be almost negated.
That said, Hopkins is THE BEST fighter alive at making his opponent fight HIS fight. With Pavlik's lack of experience....terrible footwork....bad movement....etc. He would be potshotted and countered all night.
And lets not forget, Hopkins isnt a light hitter (he may not have the power he once did, but look at all his fights...HE ALWAYS hurts his opponent) and is deadly accurate.
I would say Hopkins has a MUCH higher chance of stopping Kelly than the other way around.

I'd disagree about Kessler having the more diversified offense. Pavlik is a 2 fisted fighter who picks his punches very well, mixing in straights, hooks and uppercuts. Kessler mainly works of a left jab, straight right.
Though Kessler is definately faster and seems to have the better jab as well as simply being a smoother boxer.

Hopkins is an all-time great who has done a masterful job of aging gracefully and getting the best out of his career. There are plenty of good fighters he can still beat.
But a fresh and confident 25 year old with a high workrate and crushing power who's just now coming into his prime? That's an extraordinarily bad matchup for the wily old veteran.
Too black and white in your assessment there young jedi.
I agree with the above. But the below statement is generized in a way.
Pavlik may be young....but this, vs someone like Bernard wouldnt be an advantage. Hopkins is the best fighter out there at getting his opponent to fight HIS fight. Do you think Hopkins is going to back into the ropes and drop his right hand the way Taylor did? Do you think with Pavlik's terrible footwork and movement he would have ANY chance at keeping the fight where HE WANTS IT?
I agree he is very powerful...in both hands at that. But that is at 160. If he ever climbed into the ring with Bernard, it would be at a higher weight...and when a fighter moves UP in weight, his power moves DOWN, so to say.
He would not be able to stop Hopkins....and I dont think there is a soul out there that think Pavlik would win on points. Especially since the LHW version of Bernard is more active and stronger than the one that fought Taylor.
This is a mismatch of epic porportions....
Hopkins beats Pavlik right now...a good 1-2 with power works against somehow with no defense like Taylor, but Hopkins would eat it up...and Pavlik is just a 1-2 fighter...

I get where you're coming from, but I think it's real hard to make a guy fight your fight when he has long arms, good power, and comes out looking to throw eighty or a hundred punches every round. I mean it's not impossible, but it's a hell of a task and it consumes more energy than even Hopkins is likely to be able to spare at this stage
It's relative workrates more than power that make me think Pavlik would take it. KP can throw a lot more punches, and he can do it consistently round after round. His power is just a bonus, in that it keeps BH from trying to just ignore the punches and walk through him.
Hopkins has the exact same reach and is the same height as Kelly (people forget he was the bigger fighter vs Taylor). But if you are wondering how he handles a fighter with a reach advantage, go watch his fight vs Keith Holmes (who is taller and has a longer reach and is a better boxer than Kelly is).
He can throw alot....but how many could he throw (AND LAND???) vs Bernard...and would it be enough to negate the amount of punishment he would take via the ridiculous amount of counters he would land past Pavlik's weak defense....and from Hopkins lead rights (STILL one of the best weapons in boxing).
I would pick Hopkins by late KO or VERY WIDE UD. He overmatches him BADLY.

He'd eventually get hurt at some point - his reflexes are not what they once were... Also, he's featherfisted so he couldn't hurt Kelly - and Pavlik throws WAY more punches so the judges would hook him up...
I got Pavlik by late TKO (corner throws in towel) or wide UD in this one.
