Thought i create a thread where you can post a fight or a part of boxing history (deaths, arrests, retirements etc) that happened on this day and then from tomorrow it be another part of boxing history etc. Bit like what they do on Sky Sports News.
On this day last year Miguel Cotto returned to the ring after his first loss to Antonio Margarito. He returned to his spiritual home of Madison Square Gardens against our very own Micheal Jennings. Jennings put a brave display but Cotto for every second and every minute of the fight was the better man and stalked his prey until he finally broke Jennings down with crippling body shots.

1926
One of the mega middleweight match-ups. Harry Greb was the great buzzsaw of the 1920s. His knockout record wasn't much, but opponents came out looking like they'd been through a beehive. No-one ever threw more punches. There again, maybe he had to, to be sure some of them landed. You can't be the best judge of distance when you fight most of your career with only one good eye! Trying to take the world middleweight title from this amazing character was Tiger Flowers, who was known as the southpaw Harry Greb - so people knew what kind of fight to expect. Flowers used his left hand to still the Greb whirlwind, cut his eye, and become the first black boxer to win the middleweight title. Some people thought the points decision should have gone Greb's way, in this fight and the return fight later that year. Spookily, both of them died during eye operations.

6 years ago today James Butler cameback after a prison stint, you may remember him sucker punching Richard Grant with the gloves off. James is currently serving 30 years for murdering Max Kellerman's little bro Sam.
Butler got 30 years but he didn't get LIFE because he and Sam were good friends. I don't know the entire story, but James suffers from chronic bi-polar disorder and can't control things in the present. Long story short, they only gave him 30 years as the poor bastard is mentally a vegetable and passed the insanity defense.

Its fascinating seeing how he develops through the years and the weight classes. Watching this video you would never imagine that 119 pound left-hand happy kid 10 years later knocking out world class opponents 25+ lbs heavier.
Like you say the intensity has always been there, but this video just shows what an unbelievable job Freddie Roach has done, Pac is such a well rounded fighter now.

:yep
Capn Caveman was a banger as well, had knocked out 20 of 21 opponents!
Was surprised by the reception Hagler got, quite mixed. Guess he was only just starting to get the recognition he deserved prior to the super fights that followed.

Yeah Marvin's career was one for the grinders. Hardcore fans respect his graft because he never did anything flash but he was damn well effective. Shame he didn't get the Leonard win but we all know how great he was.
His mentality is what i love about this sport.

It looked like it hit him on the nose, if that had landed on the chin they'd still be trying to wake him up now.
I'll never forget the clip of Enzo when the ref was giving him the count. His hair all over the place, didnt know where he was, he looked like he'd just been abruptly woken up by his hotel fire alarm in the middle of the night.

It still pisses me off as well mate, more because of the first fight. This fight was closer and i can just about see why Pac got the decision, the knockdown obviously proved crucial in the end. But its a travesty that JMM will likely retire without a deserved victory over arguably the greatest fighter of our generation.
Pacman obviously has a thing for the 15th March, on this day in 2003 he stopped Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov in the 5th round in the Phillipines. A very much work-in-progress, left-hand happy Pac was dropped quite hard in the 4th, (i think) the last time he was knocked down in a fight, but showed great heart to stop Serik in the 5th.

Everytime i watch this it always amazes me how much punishment Taylor took and how easy he was to hit even in those early rounds. Chavez basically cought him with almost every power punch. Taylor was a great talent, but such a dumb fighter, kinda reminds me of Shane Mosley in the sense that his speed blinded people to his many flaws.

Chico was a monster at 130 and looked unstoppable until he ran into Floyd, although he had problems with the weight and a looming prison sentence. I still think whatever Chico turned up that night Floyd was just too good. He carried some power down at super featherweight as well to go with his speed, defence and ring generalship, which he lost as he moved up through the weights.

2 years ago today Joe Calzaghe fought what turned out to be the penultimate fight of his career, finally making the trek across the pond to beat Bernard Hopkins via controversial split decision in Las Vegas and claiming the Ring Light Heavyweight Title in the process (apologies for the quality of the video, shit annoying music playing over the fight)
On the undercard there were wins for Nathan Cleerley and Audley Harrison, plus top American prospects Danny Garcia and Daniel Jacobs.

6 years ago today Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao fought to a controversial draw at the MGM Grand in one of the fights of the year for the IBF Featherweight Title. Marquez recovered from 3 knockdowns in the 1st round and in many people's eyes deserved the victory.
On the undercard Miguel Cotto decisioned Lovemore N'Dou over 12.

17 years ago today, 8th May 1993
Lennox Lewis decisioned Tony Tucker over twelve at the Thomas & Mack Centre, Las Vegas, in his first defence of the WBC Heavyweight Title he was given after Riddick Bowe refused to face him. A reminder of just how fortunate boxing fans were in the 90's, look at this for an undercard;
Gerald McClellan W Julian Jackson TKO 5 12
Julio Cesar Chavez W Terrence Alli TKO 6 12
Meldrick Taylor W Henry Hughes RTD 2 10
Hector Camacho W Eric Podolak TKO 5 10
Elsewhere on the same night Oscar de la Hoya moved to 7-0 with a 4th round tko of Frank Avelar in Nevada.

2 years ago today Ricky Hatton rebounded from the first defeat of his pro career against Floyd 6 months earlier, with a unanimous decision over Juan Lazcano at the City of Manchester Stadium. On the undercard Paulie Malignaggi won a split decision over Lovemore N'Dou in the infamous 'mid-fight haircut' scrap. Craig Watson comfortably outpointed Matthew Hatton while there was a win in a stay busy fight for Jamie Moore.

:bump 26 pages deep this was :-(
On this day in 1988 in a poor man's Hagler-Hearns, Julian Jackson defended his WBA Light Middleweight Title with a brutal 3rd round knockout of Buster Grayton. Bombs away from the first bell, this definitely wasn't gonna need judges. Great bodywork from 'the hawk' and a devastating left to close the show.

Fair play for digging that deep, mate. If I'm looking for a thread and can't see it after a few pages, I just give up:lol:. I must admit that I am a bit of a leech with this thread; I look at it whenever it's bumped, but I never comment. Another drawback is it feels like I'm sprinting towards old age when I see posts like '5 years ago today':-(.
Still, it's another one of your top threads, Mandanda. I will continue to view even if I don't contribute:good.

On the undercard, younger brother Rafael Marquez retained his IBF Featherweight Title against Silence Mabuza when Mabuza's corner pulled him out of the fight after the 9th round.
On that same evening, from a card at Madison Square Garden, Vernon Forrest took a widely disputed 10-round decision against Ike Quartey and on the undercard of that fight Andre Berto went to 14-0 with a first round stoppage of Roberto Valenzuela.

6th August 1946
The death of arguably the best fighter Scotland has ever produced, former World Flyweight World Champion Benny Lynch. Between 1932-1936 Lynch established himself as the undisputed World Flyweight Champion, only losing his title on the scales in 1938 when his hard drinking lifestyle caught up with him and he failed to make the weight.
From Wikipedia - "Benny Lynch's boxing career was over by the time he was 25 and he battled with alcohol for the rest of his life. He was a pathetic sight in the streets and pubs of Glasgow where people pressed drinks on him when a square meal was what he needed. The man who had so much talent died in 1946 from malnutrition, aged 33, a lonely misfit in the city that loved and broke him."
Overall record 81(34)-12-15
