Dumb thread....most people who saw dempsey fight are probably dead now...I hate comparing era's makes no sense we have advaced techniques as time goes by and nutrition....back then the fighters were tougher though, it's a lot tougher to ride the rails and then fight for years in hobo camps. Also i heard one time that Dempsey was Tyson's favourite fighter and loved to read about him. Shame about Tyson thopugh he is so interested in the history of boxing and his knowledge is evident when he talks about it...shame about the other stuff...but i still like the guy and wished he had never fallen so far and evetually opened a restaurant called Tyson's in New York...shame.

Tunney has a better chance than Dempsey does, partly because Dempsey has between 0-0.01% chance of winning this fight, ESPECIALLY if we are talking a modern 12 round fight, modern sized gloves, modern refs, etc.

Tyson idolized Dempsey, and was for all intents and purposes a modern, larger, faster version of him. This fight wouldn't go past three, and I would lay my money on Tyson KO1. Honestly I don't see how Dempsey can hurt Tyson, and we know for sure that Tyson can hurt Dempsey :good

The "Tyson never encountered a bob/weave fighter like Dempsey" or whatever "old-school trumps new-school" methodology that may seem appropriate is moot. Tyson studied Dempsey almost obsessively, so Dempsey isn't gonna suprise anyone with his 1920s style.

Keep in mind prime Tyson's record. If we include the Holyfield and Douglas fights (assuming prime Tyson lasted until 1996 or so, most believe that after he fired Rooney he started declining rapidly - see the first Bruno fight), then Tyson lost to....two men, both of which were/are considerably larger than him, with reach advantages. Nobody won a fight with prime Tyson by brawling it out with him, and Dempsey simply lacks the physical attributes AND the skillset to do anything than go for the KO. In the ring with Tyson, this means he dies - quickly.

Small chance of KO by Dempsey, but it pretty much has to happen early in the first round, cause once Tyson gets tearing at him he's gonna be fighting to stay on his feet. The key here is to keep in mind that Dempsey's power is, if anything, grossly exaggerated by those on this forum. Glove sizes, sizes of opponents, inaccurate film, etc. are all reasons that Dempsey may LOOK powerful, and indeed he was, but by modern standards he would not be so dangerous.

I simply can't favor a champion who only defended his title 6 times in 7 years, and was knocked out of the ring by a fighter like Luis Firpo over an incredible force like the one that Mike Tyson was in the late 1980's.

Tyson utilized a style that was carefully crafted and evolutionalized by fighters like Rocky marciano and Joe Frazier, wheras Dempsey was more of a crude slugger with a rather one dimensional set of skills.

He simply did not have the offensive nor defensive ability to overcome a very fast and powerful heavyweight like Tyson. Sure, Dempsey had an all time great first round KO record, but most of those wins came against fighters whos records were 0-0-0. Tyson's first round knockouts came against proven fighters in Michael Spinks, Carl Williams, Marvis Frazier and Alex Stewart. Hardly, a noteworthy comparison to fighters who had never been in a single pro fight.

Dempsey had cleaned out top contenders by 1923, and did not defend for 3 years. They tried to make a fight with Harry Wills (who would lose to Sharkey and Uzcudum) but deal feel through. Dempsey was an animal, so was Tyson. Dempsey had beter chin (slightly) and could stay back and box at times. He could also still keep a fast pace after middle rounds. For you height and reach freaks, he was taller by 3 inches and had 4 inch reach advantage.

Either guy could win, but I'd go with Dempsey. It would definatley be ko, whoever won. And a great fight.
