View Full Version : If MAB pulls this off...is he the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?

That would be a hell of an accomplishment.

I already consider him and Morales to be right next to each other, somewhere around 3-5.

But this would be quite an accomplishment, to avenge his loss against the pfp#2 (or #1 if you feel that way) guy on the planet.

No. MAB, even if he gets a shady GBP decision, would not be fit to carry a vial of sweat that dripped off of the testicles of JC Superstar.

But if MAB was still with Top Rank, he'd be a savior to boxing and a saint to Mexico, right?

He'd be a hell of a lot richer, and wouldnt have to drive Schaefer to those GBP meetings.

Yeah, because we all know Arum is a square dealing fellow, who NEVER gets into any shady business dealings. Those federal corruption probes were just playa hatin'. :-(

Who am I to say, but it shure as hell wouldn't hurt his standings.

I respect MAB as a top level fighter.

But I respect Morales more as a gallant, clean fighter and as a person.

MAB giving his opponents headbutts, elbows and borderline lowblows isnt cool.

Morales may be an arrogant jackass in the ring, but at least he doesnt commit cheap shots against his opponent. Only pure competitive fistfighting.

But I gotta say, Marco's left hooks to the head and body are beautiful, elegant and dangerous all at once.

THe only edge JC has over Barrera right now is that he has beaten about 2X more bums in his career.

Chavez also never lost in his prime like Mab did twice against Junior Jones

He can't touch Julio Cesar Chavez. And he's one of my favorites, too.

Not Number 1, but darn close. Aside from JCC and maybe Sal Sanchez, I don't see anyone ranked ahead of him. I've always regarded Zarate as slightly overrated, and Olivares' prime was just too short to be considered at the very highest level. If he wins decisively, it might rank as the greatest ever win by a Mexican fighter though.

A win over Pac and rematch & win against Juan Manuel Marquez would seal his legacy, but hard to say if put him on greatest mexican ever.

Forgot about Miguel Canto. I'd say a win would put him just ahead of Canto.

I would put him in the top 3 - perhaps above Salvador Sanchez.

It probably moves him into my Top 3.

definitely top 3, maybe top 2....Salvador Sanchez was pretty brilliant in his tragically short career. I would put Barrera over JCC if he beats Pacquiao.

Finito Lopez also, IMHO. Probably 2nd, behind only JCC. I'd put him ahead of Sanchez.

Yes, I would say it would. As can be seen is this thread, there would still be debate about him and Chavez - but it would certainly confirm what many of us already believe, which he is the best Mexican fighter since Chavez.

Top 10 Mexicans

10 Erik Morales
9 Vicente Saldivar
8 Lupe Pintor
7 Salvador Sanchez
6 Marco Antonio Barrera
5 Jose Napoles (Adopted Mexico as his own country; Cuban by birth)
4 Ricardo Lopez
3 Ruben Olivares
2 Carlos Zarate
1 Julio Cesar Chavez

Mentions to: Humberto Gonzales, Miguel Canto, Rodolfo Martinez, Alfonso Zamora, Daniel Zaragoza, Joe Rivers, Baby Arizmendi, Chalky Wright, Manuel Medina, Rafael Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez and Jose Luis Castillo.

A win over Paciquao may in due course take him past Napoles, but not at the moment.
