View Full Version : What's up with ESPNC?
Can they play something besides Ali once in a while. They must have a huge library of old fights, come on, I've seen enought Ali, Fraiser and Tyson. :patsch

Yeah, they are blowing off classic wars like Norton-Holmes, Zale-Graziano, Pep-Saddler etc.

The outdoor Life network has some other classic fights. Two I caught were Duran - Cuevas and Foreman - Morrison.

Doesn't ESPN have a massive archive of old school fights from Cus D'Amato collection?

I was watching classic fights from the spanish channel last night. Even they're better than espn. I think they're arrogant.
last night was Zarate-Rodolfo Martinez. I don't know if you're into that sort of thing but it's better than watching Ali again. they also put in small clips of other fights but I forgot who.
I think they have the same 12 fights and it's just on a loop. They have some monkey come in and push the button every week.

a few weeks back they saw Walcott Louis 1 and 2. ten rounds of Louis Charles, and Louis Ringside.
Follow by Marciano Ringside the week later. The flip flop. Yeah its the same fights. but I would lean with 30 fights per year. And add a new one or so like Fullmer Paret or something.

They do, yet prefer to play Ali vs Norton, vs Foreman, vs Frazier.....:nut
Sure, they were great fights, but please no more, put some other fighters out there.

That's what I mean. Why have such a huge and varied archive if you just keep on showing the same fight all the time? :huh

Yeah I don't get it. It's probably either some focus group came up with the numbers saying that those are the most popular fights and that's what is going to draw viewers or some sort of copy write deal.
Who knows, all I know is that it's irritating.

Well you know any Ali fight is a classic, if you go by Espn classics rules.

ESPNC has been doing this for years now. They must have a team of Ali nuthuggers headed by the supreme priest of nuthuggers, Thomas Hauser or something. I agree with the monkey coming in and pushing a button. I hate Ali fights now. For God's sake, I wish they'd show the other 95% of great fighters who's fights they must have in their vault. It's time for a shakeup at ESPN.

Basically, besides the "Ringside" shows, which have some quality stuff on them, they just show a whole lot of regular ESPN reruns and Ali fights.

I'd like them to show more Hagler and Duran fights. Maybe something called 70's slugfest that shows the highlights from some of the best ko's for each decade.
As it is now It's pretty much like Amy said. Ali all day. With some commercials inbetween.
Worse when they have a commercial with Ali in it.

They can begin with the golden era of the 130 lb division (WBC version of course) Arguello-Escalera 1 thru Chacon-Boza 2.
Then they can switch to 175 and the classic brawls of Saad and Galindez and throw in the Harding-Andries trilogy for good measure.
That would make for a nice start...

True, they show that once a month. There a bit slow on the gun in regards to that fight.
When showing Ali fights they have rules
1 rule 1. NEVER, and I mean NEVER show a fight Ali lost. So no Fraizer 1 or Norton 1 or Spinks 1. But do show the Holmes fight to show people why we should feel sorry for Ali. It would ruin this Ali worshipped stuff.
2 When your not showing a nornal Ali fight, show a classic fight like Foreman or Fraizer 3. And than do it day in and day out lol.
3, make sure Ali gets more screen time than Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Ray Robison or Jack Dempsey COMBINE. Only show thsos other fights when the monkey eats one of the Ali tapes by mistake.
and 4. After the Ali fight, we must bow down and prey to the great Ali god for having the Honor of watching his fights over and over again.

Showing more of the older stuff would be the start imo. pre 1930's would be a good start.

It all has to do with name recognition. We live in a name-driven society where someone like Paris Hilton becomes famous and nobody really knows why. But we all know the name. Everyone knows Muhammad Ali & Mike Tyson. ESPNC isn't geared for hardcore fans like those on this board. It's geared for casual watchers who may tune into another Tyson or Ali program but who won't bother to check out Zarate-Zamora. Thank god for YouTube where you can see many of the greats ignored by mainstream TV.
