HBO calls off deal with UFC

LAS VEGAS – UFC president Dana White insists his company eventually will reach an agreement with HBO Sports to broadcast several mixed martial arts fight cards per year, even though HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg released a statement Friday saying the deal is dead in the water.

The UFC and HBO have been talking for more than a year and White publicly has said several times he believed a deal with HBO would be completed before long.

The UFC went as far as looking to stage a card in Portland, Ore., in December that would have served as a kickoff for the HBO series. White said a show in Montreal also was discussed.
But on Friday, Greenburg said the network had decided against going forward with the UFC.

The sides had been locked in a battle over control of the production of the telecasts. The UFC produces its broadcasts on Spike TV and on pay-per-view, and wanted to continue to do so on HBO. But HBO insisted on control of the broadcast.

"After lots of discussion, it became apparent that the business model doesn't make sense for either one of us," Greenburg said in his statement. "So, we've agreed to go our separate ways. You never know what the future holds. We have enormous respect and admiration for the executives we dealt with at the UFC. We wish them well."
White isn't bothered by Greenburg's statement and said he doesn't believe it ends the possibility of a deal.

"We'll come to a deal with HBO, I'm 100 percent confident of that," White said. "Ross is probably pretty happy now, but we'll get a deal done with them. Believe me, we will. They want the deal, I want the deal – and when two sides want the deal, it gets done.

"There's a lot of stuff to this and these things take time. Deals are never easy to get done. They take a lot longer than I'd like."

Bizarre, shameless display of hope on White's part. Most would choose not to make a statement after negotiations have ended.

Keep this shit off the boxing forum. Too many boxing fans get all butt hurt and cry to the mods like little girls when fight fans (all fighting sports) weigh in..

there is no link between modern mma and pankratia.. Shit boxing was around at that time too but we only talk real history. like boxing has been around for 120 years because it has a direct link with modern boxing

Im glad they were unable to strike a deal, that was part of the reason I canceled my showtime subscription and I let them know about it. UFC is lame, I guess it its ok to watch when nothing else is on.

What are you talking about? There IS a huge link between the two as far as what really goes on. Pankratia being from right around 650 bc.. For christ sakes, wiki Pankratia if you have to.

I'm actually pretty ashamed of some of the posts contained within this thread and I still cannot understand why people need to ridicule and mock the other while trying to proclaim that their favourite out of the two (Whichever that may be) is the greatest thing since live's bread.

I love and respect both Sports and there is no denying Mixed Martial Arts have came a long way these past few years.

In regards to the UFC though they need to make some changes to make it more credible but the basics are they.

Plus they need Fedor Emelianenko. The guy is a beast who would destroy anyone who gets in his way.

Lock this faggot thread. I would beat most of them in a boxing match, obviously not in the ufc. You are a keyboard warrior that would never talk to somebody like that on the streets cause you would get laid out, so you come on here act tough cause thats the only place you can do it.

This just shows how ignorant most of you are, the reason they couldn't pan out a deal is because HBO wants control of alot of things just like they control when Wlad will be fighting next. We can't see Wlad fight any time soon because HBO says so!!. So Dana White doesn't want this to happen to MMA like alot of bullshit has happened to boxing. He has learned from boxings mistakes.

Dana White is a dipshit anyhow. HBO wants to control the product shown on their network, understandable.

As long as that retard Joe Rogan is commentating I'm not paying for no PPV's.

Thank god hbo did the right thing. If ufc was carried under the hbo umbrella it would give it more credibility than it deserves, the executives at hbo got it right this time in my opinion.

But even Fedor said that Dana White wants to controll Pride thats why he bought it.
He whated to change the Pride rules.
HE TRIED TO CONTROL WHEN AND WHERE FEDOR FOUGHT!
Fedor said, Nobody Tells Me Who or Where I Can Fight!
PRIDE is on an whole other level in comprasion to ufc!
Besides the point, dana white is a jackass.
He always say this fight is the greatest match-up, this fighter is the greastest fighter, boxing is nothing.
