James Toney over Michael Nunn ([Only registered and activated users can see links]). Nunn was undefeted and a top 10 pound for pound boxer. With talk of him being an all time great. Te fight was in his hometown as well. Toney was a reltive unknown at the time.

Texan Stevie Cruz over Barry McGuigan in 1986.
(By trade Cruz was a plumber's helper in Fort Worth, with no money in his savings account and a floating address. He was just Nobody from nowhere, and he would be going home soon.)

It probably wasnt that big an upset elsewhere, but in Australia at least, Fenech v Nelson II almost defied belief.

Stole mine. Robinson-Turpin is in my opinion the greatest non hw upset of all time. not so much tiger jones because jones was a real good fighter and robinson was coming off a long layoff. no one really knew what he had.

Sports Illustrated actually backed Leonard in the Hagler fight. I don't think the way Ray won the fight was that surprising. Had he mauled Hagler, or did the unthinkable and stopped him, then that would have been a huge upset. Ray's defeat of Hearns in their first fight was a bigger upset in the way that he won, stalking Tommy and looking for the KO, while Tommy got on his bycycle and tried box his way to a decision. Going in, most thought that the roles would have been reversed.
Duran over Barkley sure surprised me.

Good list. I haven't seen it, but the bolded one especially jumps out to me. The guy only had 3 stoppage wins going into the fight with Muhammad.
I'll throw Tszyu-Phillips into the mix, too.

I know where your coming from and there was a few picked leonard but the majority fancied hagler strongly. The bookies in the UK and Ireland had Leonard at 8-1 and its not often these guys are wrong
