I've decided to learn to box and compete in at least one competitive fight before I get too old to do it. How long would it take me to go from complete beginner to being of sufficient standard to be able to step into a ring and handle myself?

Maybe a year or two. I'd say at least a year though.

It really depends on you. You may learn more quickly more than others or you may not. I was ready to fight after about 4 months in my opinion but circumstances mean I haven't fought yet :(

Ive known guys who jumped in there after 3months. I think the average is anywhere from 6-12months. Again, it depends on your talent and how you train. Id take a guy training 5 days a week 2hrs a day HARD whos been training for 6months over someone going to the boxing gym once a week for 1hr sessions for 2 years.

4.5 months for me but I was ready before that and my fight only lasted 1 minute (I won).

That was training 5 days per week.

Stance, guard, 4 fundamental punches, footwork. Once you know these fundamentals you could fight but it's a case by case scenario where your coach and you decide together.

If you got no talent, then NEVER. Sorry to say, but the truth.

It really depends on what you mean by 'handle yourself'. Then it will depend heavily on how motivated you are, how knowledgeable your trainer is and how well you retain and apply what you've learned in the ring against sparring partners. If you're at a decent gym and you TRULY commit yourself to learning the fundamentals( proper stance, footwork, punch technique and conditioning) then I can see you being competent enough to win an amateur fight in about a year. Keep in mind that things like previous athletic experience and natural ability will expedite things considerably but 1 year is about right IF YOU COMMIT YOURSELF TO WORKING HARD AND LEARNING.

I had been boxing 5 months. For the first 2 months though I only trained two times a week. Then for the last 3 I trained 1.5 hours a day 4 days a week. Looking back that probably wasn't enough and I should have waited about 3 more months or so. I lost the fight but it was competitive. You will know when you are ready though, you gotta learn the basics, then start sparring, once you feel very comfortable in sparring then you are probably ready for your first fight.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Any tips on what to look for in a gym & trainer, and how to learn most effectively?

All i can say is it depends.

Hell the youngest pro world champ ever was 17 when he won it and there have been people to win a world title in their 3rd pro fight but then again there are still 30 yr olds around the world training for years and still haven't had an amatuer bout so it really all depends on you, how fast you learn and how hard you train.
