Ok sorry for another Pacquiao thread but I really feel that this is a great match up. Two ATG's, Napoles of course more proven at the weight but a smallish Welter who would not hold a significant weight advantage over Manny.

Mantequilla is the consumate stylist and can both lead and counter punch brilliantly, would he be able to deal with Pacquiao's punch output, power and speed? I really do view this fight as something of a toss up, maybe i'm reading too much into Napoles' struggle with southpaw Billy Backus and his tendency to cut but I cant deny that was what got me really thinking about this fight.

Anyway i'd like to hear your opinions. Poll coming up shortly :good

The Napoles of the late 60's was a better fighter IMO, clearly. His tendancy to cut could cost him, certainly, but I'd expect him to get the better of the action, and a series if necessary. He has all the tools to neutralize Pacquiao's style.

Napoles is a brilliant all round fighter.. would you expect Napoles to take the defensive role in a fight or stand and trade? I picked this match up because Napoles is in Pacquiao's size range. Guys like Rodriquez, Leonard, Gavilan are all too big to be viable opponents.

Then again it's been said many times that an opponent is too big for manny pac

Napoles by TKO in the 8th. Probably the best boxer I've ever seen, but I wouldn't go as far to say that it'll be an easy fight...

Well a fighter who exerts a lot of pressure and imposes himself with strength potentially is a threat to Napoles. Napoles is just so good a boxer though, he was finding Monzon with shots from both hands early on, and Marquez' combos found the mark on Pacquiao repeatedly, which aren't as good as Napoles'. Napoles for me, Pacquiao has the ability to back him up but i just don't see it enough, Napoles would be able to outbox him.

As great as Pac is today, and is a favorite of mine...Jose Napoles would have been a bridge too far..Mantequilla was peerless at 147. Cuts were his only weakness, but I'll be damned if he didn't attain the heights of greatness without them being that much of a factor. Napoles would have stopped Pac before the 10th..outgunning him for a tko.

The cuts could definitely come into play in this one...but if they didnt I wouldnt hesitate to pick Napoles.

napoles's fair skil would play a big factor in this fight.

What would he do with pac's speed given his cuts and blinded eyesight midway in the fight?

Pacquiao offers up more in the way of pure speed and aggression than he does in actual physical strength, which is a more useful tool for an aggressive swarmer against a guy like Napoles. Usually that would have to come from a larger fighter, (which Pacquiao is not) as Napoles was quite strong himself. I think stylistically, Napoles's timing, accuracy, and poise are a good foil for Pacquiao. The fact that he carries with him all of the physical tools and mental intangibles to back it up gives him a more than satisfactory case for getting the W, here. The only issue would be his tender skin, IMO.

I would pick Pacquiao to stop Napoles at 140.

Napoles would systematically outbox Pacquiao. It would be a fight, but Jose should pull it out by UD at least.

I don't like all these hints of Manny being the offensive beast, and Nap being the "boxer" type.

Napoles is at least as hard a hitter at these weights and the better overall offensive fighter, if not quite as quick.Sure he does like to coast and stay in 2nd gear if he can get away with it, and as a borderline acoholic for much of his reign, the slightly out of shape, less than focused version that sometimes showed up could be given a good fight, but if the focused one with something to prove shows up...it could well be the smaller Manny being the one backed up and starting to think of having to contain his foe.Napoles in aggressor mode is a brutal fighter with a near-grainite chin...and a vastly superior 'tache to Manny as well. That affront could well be the key to offend Napoles.
