This has just been posted on FW facebook group so looks like the fight is definitely at Upton Park but i just dont see how he is going to fill it?
Im thinking heavy marketing at a push he will get between 8000 - 10 000 but am i right in thinking that the night of champions that mitchell feautred on there were a fair few empty seats and that was a stacked card of ******s current crop. In terms of marketing what angle can Frank use to attract the casual fan with this fight?

Yeah, the arena only filled when Khan was on. The people behind me came from Wales and had no clue who Mitchell was and thought Prescott was a Brazilian who beat Khan lol. I think the West Ham fans like Mitchell, there's two at work who know fuck all about boxing, but were talking about Mitchell's last fight and the funny KO.

Mitchell will use his "West Ham" supporter idenity to the max...This, along with the amount of Aussies in London will ensure a huge crowd of around 20-25,000...

you get wet.......
But there will be a canopy above the ring that all the lights and sound stuff will hang from, and that'll protect the ring from the rain.

Are there that many Aussies in London? How many boxers have tried using the look i support this team trick it works to a certain extent but he has to be known for this to work 2 months? is that enough time to get him out in the public eye i dont know both are going to have to do a lot of shouting about themselves

Sky need to hype the fuck out of this thing. Play a bit on the British/Oz thing. Maybe draw a few parallels with Hatton (working class lad, fighting for first world title against Aussie fighter etc). And the West Ham thing as people have said.

Does anyone think this could be a sign that Khan will definitely be on ITV?
What I mean is, it looks more appealing to SBO having a fight in a football stadium than just a normal arena and he could make more money aswell from staging the fight at Upton Park.
wrimc
03-16-2010, 11:46 AM
I think Ricky paved the way but its not a formula easy to replicate in such little time whilst its easy for football fans to pay £20-30 week in week out to watch their team its not as easy converting that to watch one boxing match and that is a sad fact even though most would probably be quite inclined to the idea but boxing just isnt worth £30 for the causual fan atm.
Frank needs to stack the card and pay out for LOADS of promotion and marketing for this his purse bid was $515 000 he is going to lose so much money on this fight he is banking on Mitchell winning then fighting a big US name and making a ton of money on the PPV for that. If not he will have invested an awful lot in Mitchell for no return, have to admit though Frank has a knack for getting just the right fight Tsyzu, Barrera etc

Frank is at a turning point here he has some real class in his stable but needs 2-3years for one of the real stars to com through Gavin Degale Ste Smith? And then maybe 1-2 for Clev Bellew Brook to reach challenger level on the world stage Mitchell is all he has in terms of star power. If Froch was in his stable now he would be in that star position whilst the others came through no doubt about it.

Don't get me wrong. Mitchell will have to play the "West Ham" card to the max but it will generate a lot of interest. West Ham's season will be over by then and the possibility exists of rival London firms coming over to take the piss: especially Millwall.
Honestly, this could be huge and Frank ****** knows it but it has to be hyped.

i really cant see this happening. im predicting a late change of venue. there isnt the demand for mitchell, katsidis is practically unknown to the casual fan and theres no big ticket seller on the undercard. to my memory by most posters on the british forum bernard dunnes wba superbantam win wasnt a 'real' world title so how is this any different?
explaining to people that juan manuel marquez holds the wbo world lightweight belt, but mitchell will be the wbo champion? judging by the attitude to dunne on here not many would buy into it and affect ticket sales.
****** is in an intersting position. he has always had the 'main fighter' to some extent in the uk since lewis retired but now he doesnt really have anyone which means he is going to push quickly some fighters which in terms of entertainment for us can only be a good thing.
heres a question, if mitchell loses, who will be in your opinion the next frank ****** promoted world title holder?

I think either Nathan Cleverly or Kell Brook.
wrimc
03-16-2010, 01:05 PM
he will manouvre somebody somehow he always does he will get a famous boxing name and his prospect will beat him. Kell Brook vs Cotto not a bad shout on that front he will probably push Clev forward fast when he graduates. Either that or Frank might look to make some sort of domestic tournament possibly at Heavyweight? That would produce maybe not a champion but a well known name for the British public to get behind. Possibly expect a fighter to switch stable (Froch?)

I know it's different but Haye vs Valuev showed the value of a good marketing campaign.
It'll be harder for Mitchell, not being a heavy, but that's the kind of push they'll need.

Mitchell v Katsidis fight is 10 times better than Khan v Paulie, and it is a Upton Park. Don't think ****** is missing Khan too much now and perhaps it was a good thing for all concerned that Khan is away to the States - the spotlight can now be shone on other good prospects.

They can easily fill it. The Aussies love their sport, there will be about 10,000 easily. Plus the West Ham fans, maybe 5,000, then those who know this fight will be a belter another 5,000.
I went to a friendly at Craven Cottage a few years back for Australia v Norway and it was full. Field of dreams if you build it they will come, a stadium is no problem for this fight..

03-16-2010, 06:31 PM
I'll be shocked if they fill the stadium, to be honest I'd rather katsidis won purely because I wanna see more of his fights on tv. To me mitchell isn't someone who can evoke the emotion of wanting him to win like hatton, calzaghe, haye. I think mitchell is more likely going to be a froch-esque character as his fame increases in the sense people will always say khan would beat him.
Does anyone think this could be a sign that Khan will definitely be on ITV?

Surprised at everyone saying 'it needs to be a good card' - that's pretty irrelevant IMO. The London crowd will either turn out for Mitchell or they won't. 90% wouldn't have a clue about the other lads, except perhaps the Olympians.
Mitchell only has to turn up at a few West Ham games at half-time between now and then and that'll probably sell a few tickets.

I see this also. I know Mitchell indirectly through a couple of friends. He doesnt live to far from parents and lives on my old stomping ground. He had many gym wars down at the "Heathway" and was known for his gritty style. Theres going to be spots in that fight when he's going to have to get Katsidis respect. I imagine the fight will be much like the Johannsen fight which was also a cracking fight.
