Are there any fights where you think how was that match made?
And I bet they did not think it would turn out like that?

Julius Francis vs Mike Tyson
I know Francis was on a half decent run and Tyson a drinking and shagging tour..... similar to those enjoyed by the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson in days gone by, but still - an odd match to be made.
Pretty much like all of Tyson's post-jail fights barring Bruno and Lewis - Holyfield was deemed to be shot at the time :nut

Pretty understandable that he was deemed shot. He looked sluggish in the Moorer fight and was then stopped by Bowe. This couped with the heart defect that he had, people wanted him to retire (apparently something similar killed a basketball player who returned to play again after being advised to retire) and you can see why.

Then Laing went missing for 12 months when he should have been cashing in on his victory

I'm still not sure how someone as limited (though obviously possessing plenty of balls) as Richard Dunn managed to get a title fight against Ali.

Funny how some of thse fighters won early on in their career but never went on shows how important development can be for a fighter

Ali was winding down his career at the time, he liked to throw to odd easy night in now and again.

From that great fountain of reliable knowledge wikipedia:
Amateur
Calzaghe, a southpaw, began boxing at age nine.[13] In more than 12 amateur contests, he won four schoolboy ABA titles, followed by three consecutive senior British ABA titles (British Championships) between 1991 and 1993.[14] This made him only the second boxer in history to win in welter, light-middleweight and middleweight divisions.[15] He also beat future WBO and IBF world heavyweight champion Chris Byrd as a middleweight in 1992.[16] He reportedly had an amateur record of 110-10. Calzaghe received his last defeats at the hands of Michael Smyth in the 1990 Welsh ABA final and Romanian amateur Adrian Opreda at the 1990 European Junior Championships in Prague.[17][18]
Thought Tom Glovers status getting ellavated by the 'win' over the smaller and faded thaxton was a bit OTT. Hopefully he got a couple decent paydays but really he probably shouldn't have been in there.

I think a lot of the big black american fighters start out as lanky kids that put on a lot of muscle during their late teens. I have seen a picture somewhere of an amateur bout between Dawson and Salita
