Very few gave Maskaev a chance earlier on, what do you think about this matchup seeing how he did against an other 37 year old fighter last weekend?

Sam Peter wins anyways.
Oleg Maskaev doesn't have the reach advantage, nor will he have a height advantage to avoid those right hands all night.
I also believe after last night that McCline takes a better punch than Maskaev.
Maskaev may work on an uppercut though seeing as how that seems to be the punch that can hurt Sam. That said, I still believe Sam will find Maskaev alot easier.

Peter takes it.
Maskaev is a much smaller man than McCline who seems to have severe trouble with big men.
Granted, Peter is not tall for a HW, but he does have a fair bit of bulk and strength.
If he trains well, and I think that he will after what happened to him against McCline, he really should send this man into space.
My hopes for Peter refining his technique are gone, but he is half-decent in today's lacklustre division.

Before I picked Maskev but it is really tough to call. I think this fight could help Peter get better.

For Sam's sake, i hope he learned something about himself. He won a close but fair UD, but getting decked three times by Jameel McCline of all people should tell him something.

The McCline vs. Peter fight has not changed my opinion on this one.
I still pick Maskaev by UD. :)

Peter takes it. If there's one thing Peter's fights with Wlad and McCline have conclusively showed, it's that he struggled with tall opponents (forget Julius Long. Really.) because he throws his punches sloppily. This leaves him off balance, due to the fact he lunges at tall boxers' heads rather than drawing their heads down with bodywork.
McCline took advantage of this because, after overextending himself with a looping right, Peter was as defenseless as Arturo Gatti when he's fighting defensively. This left Peter's chin exposed and his legs unset, making him easy to knockdown. Against Wlad, he was facing an opponent too terrified to counter most of the time, and as a result just cut his range too short (ie. running into clinches). This also meant that, when he did connect, he hit the pact of Wlad's head, which wasn't properly penalised by the ref.
Against Maskaev, Peter doesn't have this problem of punching up. Maskaev's has a VERY SLIM puncher's chance, but I actually don't see him outboxing the busier, stronger and fresher Peter. I can also see Peter landing a lot on Maskaev and stopping him.
What I DO think now is that even 80% of Vitali could beat Peter BRUTALLY, especially since Vitali used his height better than Wlad or McCline, meaning that Peter would be doing a LOT of lunging. Lennox Lewis (probably the perfect fighter to face Peter, since he had strength, counter-punching and height), Riddick Bowe, and pretty much every decent tall boxer with a good jab and wrestling ability (like Wlad) or counter-punching (the McCline approach) would be very successful against Peter. A shorter counter-puncher, like Holyfield or Louis, would also have an easy time with such a looping puncher.

Don't know how Maskaev will be after a year of inactiveness.

I said Maskaev before in a close one but now I think Oleg beats him silly.

Before the McCline disaster I thought Peter would smash good ole Oleg to pieces. Now it's painfully obvious that Oleg takes it by simply being the much better boxer with greater timing and better defense. However, one punch could still knock Oleg into next week, as we've seen in the past when he took naps inside the ring from not so powerfull shots from McCall and Whitaker...

I have been voting Maskaev in each and every one of these polls and it is nice to see that finally the majority see it the same way.:p

Good post, agreed.
I noticed that Maskaev has almost twice the votes that Peter has at this moment. :admin

Because most fans don't really understand what they are watching. They just assume because you struggled with a lower rank guy that you will lose to the higher rank guy. Typical ABC kind of fans.

Is Peter any better than Rahman? I am not so sure. Peter is quite ponderous and easy to hit. His power was way overexagerated , and his chin isnt indestructable like some thought it was.
Rahamn knocked out Lennox Lewis, Corrie Sanders, dropped Tua at the bell , and should of won a decision. Peter hasnt Ko'd anyone but scrubs known for having terrible chins, like Williams, Yanqui Diaz, Juluis Long , Gil Martinez, Etc, Etc, it is long list of shaky chins.

I still think Peter takes it. Peter's chin may not be as rock solid as people thought, but it's STILL far better than that of glass-jawed Oleg. And let's not forget, Peter's been active and he's MUCH younger.
That said, I'm not as confident as I was before Saturday - probably only about 75 percent, down from 99 percent.

I think Peter has let down alot of people including myself a little bit, I think the fact that Peter was training to fight Maskaev and in only a week and half was told he was fighting Mccline a much bigger fighter whos physically stronger screwed him up a bit. As you remember Rahman had trouble fighting Maskaev himself after waiting to fight Vitali for close to a year and a half, Vitali who is close to 6'8 almost and is 6 inches taller than Maskaev. I believe Peter can beat Maskaev who doesnt have the best chin pretty easy, I watched the Rahman/Makaev fight a couple times and noticed that Rahaman was able to get in the overhand right in on Maskaev, a punch Peter is pretty good with. I see this fight being Peters fight to make a statement, he will knock Maskaev out in 6.
