View Full Version : Beyond the Call of Duty (Goin out on Shield)

This thread's to lavish praise upon the warriors who know it's all but over but just don't contemplate quitting.
What fights can you remember where a fighter went beyond the call of duty just to step out of that ring knowing they could go home with head held high without a moment of regret. They could take the easy route but there pride wouldn't let them roll over for no man.
The commentators shouting ''how long before the ref steps in, will the corner stop it, how much punishment can this man take!!!''
They could of been knocked out swinging for the fences, they may have been stopped on feet but they went out with honor. But they did it the right way.
It shows you how bad some guys want it...they fight through broken bones and life threatening injuries just so they can't be called a ''bum''.
Beyond the Call of Duty (the VIP Club) :good :bbb

Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes......
Mike Tyson vs Lennox Lewis......
Evander Holyfield vs James Toney...
Roy Jones vs Joe Calzaghe...
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
Thats Emotional that, the way Holyfield trainner jumps in a hugs him at the end......
You see the disappointment and fustration on Holyfields face, the man never ever gives up....and will never take a knee.
In that fight, i think he was battling with too many issues, injuries etc...
He was more embarrassed and tired than hurt against James Toney...!

I was gonna say Vince Phillips against Hatton. He took a body beating that night and was unreal. I think he later tested positive for illegal substance...we gotta keep this club clean..can't be having him in if that's true.
edit : he did so...sorry Vince pack your bags son your outta here!!!

This is what i like about boxing, sometimes you can see.."Life"..when i say "Life" i mean.
You can see it...that "Will" to survive and stay there.
Its like them people who climb buildings, and bridges for a laugh. Can you remember that programme on channel 4 awhile back about it..?
One man was asked why he does it..
And he said..
"I feel every second, a second feels like one minute..you feel the meaning of life and to live, when your on the edge"
Beyond the Call of Duty.."Going out on your shield"
I admire people, who realise in the middle of fights.
"Hey I'm not gonna win, but i'm not gonna give up"
I've watched many fights, and there is a expression that says all of that..and only sensitive individuals and highly intelligent people can see this moment.
Some fighters realise they are being outclassed and out gunned. And they choice to survive, there is a difference between surviving and going out on your shield.
Tony Tucker vs Mike Tyson.....Tony Tucker survived. "After he injured his hand, still fought well"
Kevin Johnson vs VK.......KINGPIN survived.
Going out on your shield, is when you know...it is going to be "The mother of all..up hill of fucking struggles to win"
But still, you fight like a man who's family and life is being threatened.
But still, you fight like somebody who knows...
"Hey nobody ever gave me nothing, we all gonna die some day, but i will die going down in flames....in flames."..!
Thats Beyond the call of duty..!

The second one is the one I find most heartbreaking. Alexis actually gives up, but he took a horrendous beatdown before that and he cried in the post fight interview. This video chokes me up.

Corrales vs Mayweather, the way he got up after the 5th knockdown, the look on his face, almost believing he could still win the fight, as inspiring as it gets. I'm not surprised he came back agaisnt Castillo.

Also Ricardo Torres against Cotto, the man was a late replacement, and he showed the heart of a lion, he came to fight!

Wasn't in the UK, but there was an incredible one a few weeks ago on the Mayol-Nino undercard. Daniel Estrada vs. Angel Alirio Rivero. Rivero was supposed to be some bum who had been knocked out 6 times in 7 losses. Over and over again, Estrada hurt Rivero, but Rivero would do something incredible every time he got hurt - he'd turn into the Tazmanian Devil and just start launching punches like crazy, all on wobbly legs, and as often as not he'd hurt Estrada right back. The two went back and forth like this for 10 rounds, with Rivero getting hurt at least a half a dozen times. Unfortunately, the ref jumped in for no good reason in the 10th round to give Estrada the TKO win.

Anyone who saw that fight will back me on this one.
Anyone else seen this fight?:?
I have it on tape (well, the last couple of rounds), but its not on youtube. Will have to upload it one of these days. It doesn't get much more brutal than this fight - all one way traffic though (Reyes seriously went to town on Cardenas near the end)..

Jim McDonnell against Azumah Nelson, an ATG opponent, huge power, great skills, and one eye closed.
Dennis Andries against Tommy Hearns, ATG opponent, faster, harder hitting, just all round better bouncing up and down.
Barry McGuigan against Stevie Cruz, absolutely nothing left for the last 5 rounds, a corner that panicked , completely drained in the last but survived on guts alone.

Its on the underbill of Morales - Espadas II.
I haven't seen a fight like it in modern times. Cardenas is basically out of it for a round and a half, stumbling around like a drunk with reyes pinging him with power shots all over the show, and yet the ref and corner don't stop it. The commenators are literally screaming for the fight to be called off. Cardenas finally goes down in the sixth, but the ref lets him continue, even though he can't stand properly. Reyes unloads on him against the ropes, and the incompetent ref finally steps in. Brutal stuff.

Sounds shockingly bad. I know it's easy for us to say when ref should jump in..most time it's actually hard to judge when is right time but some ref's are down right incompetent and it's worrying when it's that bad. Some corners i seen recently should also be ashamed...especially Guerrero against Darchinyian his corner were a disgrace imo.

I tell you how bad the repercussions were, in his next (and as it turned out last fight) Cardenas was KO'd by Ivan Calderon. That says a lot about how it affected his punch resistance, because Cardenas certainly could take a punch (you should have seen what Reyes was hitting him with).
Anyway, I'll try and get it uploaded and let you have a look for yourself. :good

I can't believe no one has mentioned Jake LaMotta in his last fight with Sugar Ray Robinson, the final rounds of that fight is the worst beating ever captured on film, when they talk about fights where a fighter could of been killed thats the fight they should talk about Jake had nothing left but just kept on fighting and trying to win.
Also Joe Frazier in Manila fighting blind for the final stages in that savage fight, unbelieveable courage.
