The coach recommended doing knuckle pushups to strengthen your hands and I wanted to know if there is any truth to it. Any input?

iv started doing them regularly i do 4x40 normal push ups then at the end of a workout just do 4x10 knuckle ones. Deffo can feel the difference in my forearms. You have to just try these things mate an experiment and see what works for you :good

It will definately strengthen your wrists. It's possible it may strengthen your hands as well as most forms of exercise involving certain parts of the anatomy result it increased bone density in that area. For example longe distance runners have an increased bone density in their lower body.

They can also injure your wrists/knuckles so do them sensibly. Try using a soft matt or folded towel under your knuckles.
In our group session we'll just drop and do them with out mitts on.

Doing them restricts the Tendons in the elbow, not a good idea

What if you properly stretch your arms?

Pressups open Handed work and stretch the tendons of the muscles and Tendons that work the Fingers and thumb. Making a Fist stops this, and causes an inbalance in the mechanics of the elbow.

So the jury is still out? I think I'm just gonna stick with grip strenthening exercises for now unless somebody can definitely tell me knuckle pushups benefit the hand.

I like them because normal pushups put undue strain on my wrists. They won't hurt you, that's for sure. So do em!

they will hurt at first, but under the stress , over time bones will grow stronger due to calcification to meet the demands of the stress placed upon the body, in saying that, same applys for hitting the bag
face pushups are great for preparing the body to take shots hahaha

he wants you to do them to lessen strain on the wrist when the hand is open

I have known this to be an age old karate technique. I know my technique changes when I do it, it is not a whole like a regular push up.
Scrap has an interesting point but i feel strong benefit doing them so I'll have to keep it in mind.

There are simple clues Here,1Hands were not made to Punch.2 they were adopted to carry and Hold and Push. Which made them adapt to how they are, the thumb being a big player in creating our IQ. 3 dont try and change something overnight, that took millions of years to create .
