View Full Version : Hatton: I never asked Roach to train me, I'll decide when to retire

There has been a lot of hearsay in recent weeks regarding my retirement, but I urge my loyal fans to ignore the speculation.

If, and when, I do eventually decide to retire, the announcement will be made by myself. I feel that I have earned the right to do it myself.

I was also interested to read that I had recently asked Freddie Roach to train me but that he turned me down. I wish to put the record straight that, while I have the utmost respect for Roach, I have never once asked him, or indeed considered him, to train me.

Also talks about Macklin, Magic Matt and Haye

On the Roach thing - if this is true it is twice now that Freddie has bullshitted about being asked to train British fighters. There was a story about Roach saying Haye had asked him to help with training but that was later denied by Booth and now this. :think

Feel sorry for Hatton, he's always fought to the end in the ring, even if some people think he took the easier fights sometimes.

Christ, getting hammered by Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is something to tell the grand kids:cool:

getting pretty pissed off now with hatton, either retire or dont, simple as. I dont thinki hes got it in him anymore, i mean which kinda fighter starts training then stops and goes on a mates stag do to get tanked up. He clearly doesnt love the sport anymore so just retire and stop looking to make a final payday. Either have a final farewell fight and put in 100% training, after all u owe it to urself and ur fans, or just call it a day, dont give us his limbo bullshit

i dont no, lol but if he wants to box on then do it with full committment, get a proper trainer sort out a proper diet and put the beers down. Im fed up of all this hattons announcing his retirment then suddenly hattons decided not to retire just yet, the dudes like 200lbs atm, realistically hes not gonna make 140 again and hes not got anyone to fight maybe apart from marquez.

Really glad to read this bit:

I have myself been spending some time in the gym this week and I think I gave some members of the gym a shock running next to them on the running machines. I also partook in a spinning class which is much harder than I thought!

Good news, with this training plan you should lose the weight and be ready to face an opponent in 2012.

realistically he should try shed the weight gradually and look at one final fight late this year/early next against an opponent who isn't going to give him too much trouble.

Didn't RJJ say that when he came down from heavyweight he did it to quickly. He said it should have took him 2 years to do it correctly...:yep

Hatton has always done it the unconventional way...that's just his way...:yep

He shouldn't have took a year off after the Pac fight, the fact he did casts a big question mark over his desire to carry on.

(BTW what the fuck is a "spinning class"??)

I never understood the RJJ bullshit to be honest, he weighed in at 193 lbs with his clothes on when he fought Ruiz when he fights at 175 he comes in on fight night around 183, so did ten lbs ( also take about 3lbs for his clothes )really take that much out of him? I think he just got old personally.

was it just me, or was that whole interview just a plug for his gym?

"hey, im not reired yet & didnt ask Roach to train me but you should see whats going down at Hattons Gym, you just never know whats going to happen next, you could bump into me, my pal Haye or Ali!" Its all happening at Wickys gym in Hyde, so get on yer bike & come along for the ride!"

They could do a lot worse

Do you think such an old dog as Hatton could now learn new tricks?

It's more of a generic question than one levelled at Hatton...

Can a well schooled boxer, a veteran pro if you like, really adapt his style that much? Hatton seemed to go back to jabbing his way through against Malignaggi but as soon as he got in trouble against Pac he reverted to type. Is this a problem with older fighters?

I'm thinking as well though that someone like Ali adapted his style as he got older (I appreciate that you cant use Ali as a bench mark given he was truly great) to suit account for some of the physical attributes he was losing. And someone like Napa has changed his style to suit his strengths.

I suppose my question is, in your experience, how easy is it to teach an old dog new tricks?

all this carry on is designed by Hatton to keep himself in the limelight as long as possible, but few people care or have any belief in him any more. Most have by now worked out that he was a glorified club fighter all along.
He said he was gonna decide ages ago. The boy is a joke.

He knows once he's gone he's gone. I bet he's worried he'll end up like Frank Bruno - once the curtain falls and there's no audience for his little jokes he won't know what to do with himself other than stuff his face.

The Blackout

It's taking him an awful long time to decide whether he's going to retire or not. I'm getting a bit sick of hearing this - will he/wont he.

Personally, I think the lure of stag do's and having a fortune in the bank will mean we never see Hatton back in the ring.

The hunger has probably gone, which is fair enough because he's earned a fortune, been a two weight world champion, been in some wars, and got destroyed in his last fight.

No reason for you to come back Ricky. Have a nice, early retirement with good health!!

Of course he reached his potential!!!

He could've trained every single day of his life, eating his 5 a day, never touching a drop of alchohol and he would've still got beat by the men he did.

Mayweather/Pacman are special fighters

I have no interest in this now. By the time he gets an opponent sorted a completes a training camp it'll be well over a year since the Pacquiao fight and all of that time he's been walking around at 200lbs. If he had any interest in convincing boxing fans that he was still worth watching he'd have kept himself in reasonable shape at the very least. I assume he'll be aiming his farewell fight at pissed up football fans who don't know any better then, nice one Ricky :verysad

Without wanting to slag Hatton off he could have done at lot worse than asking Roach to train him. And if he is generally being truthful (I doubt it) when he says he has never even considered it, then he is dafter than I originally thought
