View Full Version : Cortez stopped the fight (Duran-Joppy) just fine in '98.

Fellas,

I love reviewing my favorite fighter Roberto Duran and his fights. YES! It pains me to sit through some of his later fights in which he was over age 35 and bloated fighting at 160 to 168 pounds. Still, be as it was, I dealt with it.

I just yanked out my "Duran-Joppy" tape from 1998 off of Showtime. Roberto Duran was age 47 and a soft looking 159 pounds. His speed and balance was horrid. I know that, but, I was still hoping for a miracle.

Willy Joppy was too primed and savvy in 1998 for the faded Roberto Duran. No argument; it was obvious. A sad night of boxing..

STILL! I think Dr. Ferdie Pacheco was too harsh in discounting Duran and his performance. Of course Duran was ancient and nowhere near the top of his game, yet he still had some slick defensive moves in losing his ass by way of 3rd round TKO......

Pacheco was whining / screaming about how lousy referee Joe Cortez was. I thought Cortez was very aware of what was happening. He gave Duran EVERY CHANCE in the book to make a miracle occur. Okay, it was not to be... I know that..... Anyway, point is, I thought Cortez' stoppage in round 3 was fine and just....

I don't take a word that Ferdie Pacheco says seriously. One of the most nauseatingly bad commentators the sport of Boxing has ever seen.

I didn't feel the stoppage was over-due. He stopped it when Duran became defenseless on the ropes.

Again, I was FINE with the stoppage late in round 3........... Duran sounded kool with it too during the post fight interview......

I respect Dr. Ferdie Pachecho.... However, I felt he was slipping and going senile behind the microphone by 1990---circa.......... His 1991 introduction of Riddick Bowe as "Ruddock Buttock" just killed me and knocked me outta my chair....... It occurred after Bowe KO'd Rodolfo Marin in 2 rds on the undercard of "Tyson-Ruddock 2" in Vegas, Nevada.... Dr. Ferdie was clueless.........

Ferdie was also suggesting that the fight could have gone either way in the main event that night. This was after the 12 rounds. :huh

I actually have to agree with you about Ferdie Pacheco commentating, he did conduct good post fight interviews though.

And to MR.BILL this fight was disgraceful, was Duran signed back to Don King during that time?

As long as we ain't talking about Tito Trinidad or Terry Norris, we agree on a lot of things. I still appreciate the DVDs you sent me.

I can't stand Pacheco or Cortez, but Cortez was in the right for sure. There is no reason to let a living legend look like that in the ring. It was a GD farce, the whole thing. Duran had zero business being in there at 47 years old with a champion, even if Joppy isn't exactly a great champion. Cortez could've saved Duran's life by making sure it didn't become painfully more obvious the man's catlike reflexes had turned snail-like, among other problems regarding his condition that night...And the 37-year-old Duran from the Barkley fight would've wrecked Joppy too, by the way.

Duran of the Barkley fight eats Joppy's bombs and gives him a horrendous beat down, let's not even talk about the 1980 version.

I have a sixth sense about your avatar compulsion. I woke up a nice enough young woman the other day by shooting up in bed from a sound sleep and going "Addie just changed his avatar again, I can feel it!" I could be kidding. I might not be.

I think the two Jorge Castro fights took away whatever fight Duran may have had left in that old body of his. He was no good afterwards, although he kept fighting.

It was astonishing to see him stand up under Castro's best punches, and Cortez did the right thing to not let Duran go out on the canvas against William Joppy, while also giving him every chance to recover.

The scary thing is, the fight was actually postponed for TWO months cuz the initial date in Jew York was cancelled when "Holy-Akinwande" went to hell earlier in June...... Point is, Duran in Aug. '98 at age 47 and 159 pounds, LACKED that body tone that he had during the WAY EARLIER fights with "Moore, Hagler, Barkley and Leonard" of 1989... By 1998 at age 47, Duran had a very soft look to his body frame........ Age WAS a factor in 1998..... Duran still had savvy in '98, but his balance and reflexes had gone south of the border for good.....

eeew the general how very bland and crude, reminds me of a joke my friend Rupert used to tell after a glarse of fine wine...

Working class pleb walks into a supermarket, he buys 2 litres of white lightening cider, a packet of walkers crisps and a double decker. The cashier asks, "cash or cheque?" the working class pleb replies, "cash."

haaaaaar! har har, haharrrrr!

What's amazing about Duran-Joppy is that it was the just the second and last time he was ever punched out. In his very next win, El Cholo would actually avenge one of the other three stoppage defeats on his record. (Lawlor.) As wonderfully weird as Roberto's saga was, maybe that car accident was the only thing that saved Joppy from sustaining an avenging defeat.

I like referee Joe Cortez.....

Jay Nady drives me nuts.....

All the great ring ref's are now gone or retired........

Well he didn't on the night of Tyson/Ruddock II.

A beaten and bruised Ruddock, after taking a hellacious beating, was speaking into the mic replying to a question and midway through Ferdie looks away and puts the mic to Tyson and asks him something. I wanted to smash the monitor screen. Let the man talk, he just stayed in there taking Tyson's bombs for 12 rounds, let him say whatever he god damn wants.

At age 47 and getting a title shot at Joppy, Duran would've signed with anybody.... STILL! Duran challenged for the WBC 160 lb. title against Joppy in '98 for a lousy $150,000 G's.... For Duran, that's shit money.... Had Duran won, he'd have made a million in his next fight....

Dr. Ferdie Pacheco was blowing it pretty hard behind the mic by the 1990s..... He was out there..... He saved face by retiring around 1999 / 2000.... Later on, the fight doctor suffered a stroke and he now slurs his words to a degree...... Ferdie Pacheco turns 82 this year.....

I think the stoppage was ok. Duran was too slow for Joppy in 1997. Duran of 1989 who fought Barkley would have beaten Joppy, either decision or late knockout. Joppy was ok, but not great.

Ruddock did have some huge sucker lips on him.... Even Tyson teased Ruddock about his lips.... And after that 12 round rematch you could see Ruddock's lips were swollen to massive proportions..... Ruddock could kiss and stick himself to a wall with them lips........... WORD!

Well, I never really thought of Razor Ruddock when doing this 'Duran' and 'Cortez' thread, but since Dr. Ferdie Pacheco squeezed in here along with a few other names, I had to reflect on "Tyson-Ruddock" from 1991...

We seemingly got off track several posts ago.... However, be as it may, Ferdie Pacheco had gone bonkers and was really struggling with the mic by the 1990s.... That is pretty factual....

I also saw that after Duran lost to Joppy in the summer of 1998, he made a comeback down south in 1999 weighing a reported 176 pounds against a no name opponent..... Christ, Duran must've looked like a beached whale in that fight.....? In a way, I'm glad I never saw that fight.....

NOTE:

I thought Duran still looked very thick in the girth area at 165 pounds when he was fighting Castro in 1997....
