I am not really sure what kind of extraordinary physical ability you are speaking about. It would help if you clarified. Maybe I miss something.

It is really hard for me to judge Guzman's status as he has not fought/beat anybody of note in 130 besides Barrios (granted decent opponent but nothing more) and won a SD. There are several issues in 130 with Guzman: 1. Lack of power 2. Gets hit to often 3. Declining output. Soto would be a good test and measurement stick.

Judging by his resume and credentials, like you mentioned, of course not. As far as boxing ability, I think he's damn near a mini-Floyd. And you're right he did beat the (extremely underrated) Barrios at his own game...I think he could have won every second of that fight by boxing more but it was like was trying to prove a point or something and he made it hard on himself but he beat Barrios fighting like Barrios would probably want him to. A Guzman/Marquez or a Guzman/Pac fight would both be 50/50 fights in my view.

Yeah, it's not like Barrios is a second rater, I'd like to see him get better bouts to showcase this, even at Lightweight if he can't do 130 anymore.

I see JMM/Guzman as more 50/50, I see Pac/Guzman as pretty easy for Guzman stylistically.

No. Guzman is extremely quick and is improving defensively, but he lacks power and he lacks good boxing instinct. I also suspect he doesn't have a ton of heart. Against a smart boxer like JMM or even Chris John (if he were to move up), I suspect he wouldn't land a whole lot and would get frustrated. Also, Guzman has a tendency to throw a flurry, then sit back and take whatever's coming afterwards, and doesn't seem to have the sustained energy to keep taking it to an opponent. If that tendency came through against Pac, it would do exactly what you don't want to do against Pac - send him into a frenzy. If he can get Pac to box him, he might be able to win on points, but if he lures Pac into turning it into a brawl by throwing flurries and gassing himself out, then he'll get beaten pretty badly.

I think Guzman evidently is more skilled than JMM, it's a matter of mindset though as JMM definitley has the more focused and stone cold killer like mindset who doesn't break off from his game plan.

and guzman doesn't have a top notch defense either. he has this tendency to drop his hands. bad flaw against pac or marquez.

However, that's one reason why training under Mayweather might help him significantly. If Guzman can master rolling his shoulder, it wouldn't matter as much that he drops his hands a lot.

Guzman is a fighter who is visibly intimidating. He got extra ordinary skill, box well, but IMO won't go anywhere effective at 130 once he faces any aggressive, hard hitter, technical or anyone in this division who could par his stylish talent. I think he needs to go back at feathers if he encounters one.

I'm reserving an opinion until after the Soto fight. That one will determine just how serious Guzman is.

It's also important to note that a lot of people are forgetting something about Guzman. He's a relatively new name to be mentioned among the stalwarts of the division, but he is not young by any stretch. He either has begun or shortly will begin to decline, so it's not like he's going to defeat Pacquiao in 2008 and then rule the division for several years.

Whatever Guzman does in the ring, he'd also better not make any missteps outside of it in terms of activity or matchmaking.

Oh yes, Guzman DOES have enough to stop Pac. The guy rocked Barrios in the first round (i think) of their fight. And Barrios has a better chin compared to Pac.

At the lower weights, 31 isn't young. Granted, a lot of that depends on ring wars, etc., but whereas 31 is pretty young for heavy, it isn't at all for 130.

i have to disagree. mab and erik definitely have more pop than guzman at 130 and pac was able to handle their power. the last KO/TKO victory of guzman was more than three years ago at superbantam (122). that means guzman didn't bring his power up w/ him to 126 and 130.

guzman doesnt have one punch KO power, but he's not throwing powderpuff punches either. and manny dont exactly have a granite chin. I saw Guzman buzz barrios pretty good, he just couldnt follow up. that punch would knock pac down.. if it ever connects.

i think manny wins, but if he thinks guzman hasnt any good power behind his fists, manny's gonna be real surprised.

I don't doubt that he does. I have him ranked 3rd for a reason. But Soto hits harder than Barrios for my money, and Pacman hits a little harder than Soto, and with more speed.

I have a feeling guzman does have a slightly better chin compared to pac. joan doesnt have a prime morales chin, but very few do.

the reason why manny hasnt been KD in a long while is because of his style. offense is his best defense. he's a proud and stubborn fighter who'll fight back if you hit him with a nice shot. and because of intimidation.

manny, he's like a prime pedro martinez. he has good power and location, and he likes to stick a baseball in your ear once in a while. batters get intimidated and get off balanced, get tentative and theyre not so comfy at home plate. if that batter faced a "nicer" pitcher, all he needs to think about is how to hit the ball.

As for the question yes i do indeed think he's the best in the division, too many of the so called "big guns" have ran for the high hills as soon as Joan's name was mentioned, he's already challenged Pac after the last Morales fight and there was no reply, now with Joan working with Floyd Sr he's only gonna get better, his defence is class, his speed is class, his combinations are brilliant, the man is all wrong for Pac!!, people keep talking about this myth regarding Joan "not being able to hurt pac or jmm" and that's bullshit, he had Barrios dead on his feet on more than one occasion and his chinn is tough, and as long as he has his technical skills he's got more than a good chance against anybody, just like Floyd,

His last opponent, "Antonio Davis", had just fought during the MP-MAB 2. And Davis was completely outclassed by another tomato can. Yet, Guzman did not dominate this T-Rex Davis in his last fight eons ago (Guzman despite his poor resume seems to fight once every 12 to 18 months). That's probably a gauge of Guzman's skill.

Barrios was a slow plodding fighter with minimal skills but good power. Guzman a slickster with a what looks like to be an iron chin. Straight away the stylistic advantage clearly goes to someone here...gotta see more of Guz before anything else.

As for his power, he hasnt KO anyone in 6-7 fights...I wonder. Hes got talent and a dangerous fight for anyone but way too early to call him the best.

To the Pacfans, you don't have to have power to beat Pacman. JMM doesn't hit any harder than Guzman. He is faster in footspeed than Pacman and equal at least in handspeed. Punches Pacman doesn't see coming WILL hurt him.

To Guzman supporters. He has never been hit by anyone with Pacman's power or fought anyone with his power to speed ratio. He does drop his hands alot, which could be a KO waiting to happen against Pacman.

Guzman arms are only 22" compared to Pac's 25". Guzman also is not a Straight Puncher, He's mostly a Hooker with Flashy style. He hasn't KO anybody since he moved up in weight, has brittle hands, He's not that good defensively as PBF, He's older guy, All he got is his style & speed. Soto might even upset him on his next fight.

Pac's #1....If you think Joan beats Pac that's understandable although a bit far fetched. Joan is a very skilled and slick fighter but he suffers the same defeat that MAB did or even worse....what EM suffered last time out against the PAC MAN.

MAB, EM and JMM all had the skills to make PAC look stupid at times...they all had teh Chin to withstand a LOT of punishment but they ALL lost to the man they call "PAC MAN". On paper you seem to have some logic, but you can't make a prediction based on what it looks like on paper. PAC has those intagibles that is unmeasurable...you have to understand his natrual ability and fantastic talent to realise what you see in this kid.

Joan does well against everyone at 130 but losses to the very best...that's PAC and a close/ugly decision to JMM.

Pac is a phenomenal talent and he gets big money fights....But he also knocked off 3 of the best fighters in the SPORT and 3 Mex ATG's so it's warranted.....Joan has A LONG way to go. Facing PAC would be a good fight for him but ultimately a set back at the end of the night.

Learning the "shoulder Role" properly isn't hard to do...it's mastering the instinct of what's happening in the ring that is hard....Mayweather Jr did it his entire life...Oscar just started getting really good with it the last couple of years and he had been with Mayweather for years. Joan could learn it but implementing the new style effectively is completely different...It would take him a while to really use that technique to its full effect...if that ever were to happen.

guzman has a tendency to brawl. ive seen him do it in another fight too, i forget aginast who. But instead of boxing he just started going into trade mode. And he seemed to like it!

Who has Joan faced???? :rofl Look...Real talk! Joan is a great talent...very skilled and all that but he isn't anything that is above or beyond what JMM was. He still has a way to go to get to the level of JMM, EM or MAB not to mention PAC.

PAC didn't look like the DOMINATING force that he has shown on Saturday b/c MAB faught a very intelligent and Defensive minded fight. I didn't think MAB was going to get BLOWN out, he was very prepared! and had the right game plan! EM last time out was VERY prepared physically but came to FIGHT PAC....Wrong game plan!

MAB is the superior boxer yet he wasn't able to beat PAC. Neither was JMM or EM. No one ever said PAC was a SLICK or highly SKILLED Boxer...they just said he has something special which allowed him not only to compete at the highest level but DOMINATE.

Joan is wide open for a straight left...anytime you have your lead hand at your waist you're wide the fuck open....but reflexes, instinct and awareness helps and Joan has that. With that said PAC isn't the average fighter..his SPEED is nuts and it's deceptive. Like I said Joan is a great talent but that doesn't mean he's gonna be a great CHAMPION like EM, MAB and JMM and it doesn't mean he can hang with the current king pin at 130 PAC!

As much as I want to proclaim him the next big thing, I have to see him first how he fare against Soto, who is pretty good himself too. I actually pick "Little Tyson" here but HOW he will win should give us a better indication on how he will handle both JMM and Pac, who IMO are the only ones who are capable of beating him in the 130.

Stylistically, he can be a diifficult match-up for Pac, and I even give him a more than 50% of winnning the fight, but the thing is, Pac has proven against elite competition that he can take solid punches, has great stamina, great speed, and more importantly, has that heart, that determination. He finds way to win, and does not melt under pressure.

On the case of Guzman, the only fight I was impressed with him, and which won me over big time btw, was with Barrios. But I feel Barrios, though may be underrated, seems like a barbarian when compare to Pac, and that says something more about Barrios than Pac. His punches are what you call looping ones, and they are not even average fast, and a zero defense.

And before I eat my breakfast, I would appreciate if anyone here can give us an account on how he beat T-Rex who was also beaten by LUzano in the undercards of Pac-MAB rematch. I heard it was not impressive. This kind of thing can give one a reservation to hold his praise too much for Little Tyson, whose nickname at this point, seem useless and funny, given his KO percent in his last several fights.

PAC didn't look like the DOMINATING force that he has shown on Saturday b/c MAB faught a very intelligent and Defensive minded fight. I didn't think MAB was going to get BLOWN out, he was very prepared! and had the right game plan! EM last time out was VERY prepared physically but came to FIGHT PAC....Wrong game plan!

MAB is the superior boxer yet he wasn't able to beat PAC. Neither was JMM or EM. No one ever said PAC was a SLICK or highly SKILLED Boxer...they just said he has something special which allowed him not only to compete at the highest level but DOMINATE.

Joan is wide open for a straight left...anytime you have your lead hand at your waist you're wide the fuck open....but reflexes, instinct and awareness helps and Joan has that. With that said PAC isn't the average fighter..his SPEED is nuts and it's deceptive. Like I said Joan is a great talent but that doesn't mean he's gonna be a great CHAMPION like EM, MAB and JMM and it doesn't mean he can hang with the current king pin at 130 PAC!

No neither Mab or Jmm are "superior boxers" as they've never damn well faced the man to prove it, Jmm lost twice to john and Mab has been beaten too, they've lost to boxers who are not as technically talented as them, Joan is faster, has a better defence and moves much more than either of them, Joan only keeps his hands down when he feels he's comfortable, i've seen many of his fights where he's kept his hands to his ears so if Pac thinks that would be a weakness he'd be surprised, especially after Floyd Sr has worked with Joan, all you've implyed is speculation and bias notions, at the end of the day it's been proved that Pac has problems with skilled boxers i.e Jmm and Joan is of that ilk so i don't know how anyone could write of Joans chances.

Guzman reminds me of something like a poor man's Pernell Whitaker. He has great handspeed/reflexes, a very solid chin, and accurate punches, but he likes to clown around and has weak power. The problem with him like some people pointed out is that he can't stick to a gameplan that well. A matchup between him and Pacquiao right now is hard to pick, but maybe we'll learn more after the Soto fight. He could beat Pacquiao if he fights smart, but I think there is a good chance of him falling apart mentally and getting stopped in the late rounds or just losing the 2nd half of the match. Manny is just one of those rare machine-like fighters who breaks opponents down mentally/physically if they don't stick 100% to a gameplan for the entire fight.

I still think that JMM is the most dangerous opponent for Pacquiao, but if the news about him moving up to 135 is true, then that really sucks for Marquez, because he can't wait for him while getting older. But if Guzman looks sensational against Soto, then I will think he will be the most dangerous.

Learning the "shoulder Role" properly isn't hard to do...it's mastering the instinct of what's happening in the ring that is hard....Mayweather Jr did it his entire life...Oscar just started getting really good with it the last couple of years and he had been with Mayweather for years. Joan could learn it but implementing the new style effectively is completely different...It would take him a while to really use that technique to its full effect...if that ever were to happen.
Very true, and as I said before, I don't think Guzman has good boxing instincts. It's not completely new to him though.

I'm not writting off Joan chances...he is more technically sound than PAC, but he's not more technically sound than JMM. Being more skilled usually means that the "BOXER" will win.....but almost the entire top 10 at 130 is more technically sound than PAC MAN....the only problem is no one can seem to beat him by boxing! Pac-Man is the man at 130. The only guy that gives him trouble here is Marquez. Guzman is fast flashy and used to show some pop but at this weight he doesnt hit with the same authority as he did at 122. His defense is usually baseed on reflex and at the lightweights its hard to get away with just natural talent.

Alex Arthur is the mandatory challenger for Guzman's title. Guzman has stated he has no interest in fighting Arthur but if he continues to avoid the bout Arthur will become the champion by default early next year.

I was never sold-out with Guzman's skills, speed, defense and strength (never KOed an opponent outside of 122). For one, it is hard to gauge his skill because he had been fighting tomato cans. One thing is certain though, he showboats a lot (but that does not equate to being skillful). The only fight that you could probbly use to assess his capability is against Barrios (respectable opponent but not great).

Somebody kindly dissect this fight because there is no greatness that I could see in Guzman!

I don't know. From what I've seen, I'd think Soto and JMM rank above Guzman. The only fight from Guzman I've seen was against Barrios and that wasn't' exactly impressive imo. Towards the latter half of the fight, Barrios had him on the ropes for the most part as Guzman seemed to gas. He got caught with big shots at times too - great chin, but he's definitely hitable. If it had been another fighter who wasn't so damn wild like Barrios, Guzman would've been in serious trouble.

Possibly...hes a natural fighter in there...he has 300 some amateur fights...very confidant in there of his abilities.... quick reflexes.... very very good defensively...good lateral movement... only thing missing is 1 punch ko power at the top level...but everything else he has MORE than makes up for that minor flaw...I would say he could very well possibly be the best fighter at 130 pounds...
