Very very hard and I don't have a static list, it's always changing. But right now -
01 - Charley Burley
02 - Joe Louis
03 - Orlando Canizales
04 - Bernard Hopkins
05 - Dick Tiger
06 - Micheal Watson
07 - Roman Gonzalez
08 - Joe Frazier
09 - Carlos Zarate
10 - Hozumi Hasegawa
Like for example, up until this week I prefered Olivares to Zarate, Zarate wouldn't even have been in my ten a week ago but I been watching his fights this week. Also, active fighters have an advantage because I want to see what they do next. So I don't really like Hasegawa better than Liston or Gonzalez more than Frazier, but I'm keen toe see what they do next. The only two that are permanent on the list are 1 and 2.
If you want a strictly classic list, Liston and Olivares would be 9 and 10 respectively.

Miguel Cotto to me was one of those guys you see early on in his career and see talent. Then you blab on about him to your friends saying hes gunna do this and that, and they dont believe you...then he steps up class and delivers, then delivers again, then delivers in a war. He has his flaws but he has pulled through in hard fights more often than not, and in my opinion he has the most stacked list of opponents of any relevant active fighter today. I always cheer for him. The Pacquiao fight i was split, but with all my friends being not so big on the sport, not even giving him a prayer against pacman, it made me hope for him to pull it off.
He doesnt say shit, he just gets in their and works, i really like his character

In no particular order....
Marvin Hagler (first fight I ever saw as a kid was Hagler-Hearns)
Andrew Golota (after his fights with Bowe I made the transition from an interested casual fan into a die hard boxing fan)
Sugar Shane Mosley (have always been a fan of Shane)
Larry Holmes (I remember rooting for him when he fought Tyson when I was a kid and I remember seeing him fight from time to time as he was getting older. When I dug into the archives and started watching more and more of his older fights I grew a deeper appreciation for Larry. Also, having gone to college near Easton, PA probably always gave me a positive image of the man--he was beloved in that area)
Marco Antonio Barrera (became a huge fan after his first fight with Morales)
Erik Morales (see above)
Bernard Hopkins (always appreciated his skills and was rooting for him when the 2001 middleweight tournament began-became a bigger fan as time went by and I started watching some of his older fights)
Mike Tyson (I started watching boxing casually after Hagler-Hearns so naturally I used to love watching prime Tyson whenever I could as a kid)
Tomasz Adamek (became a big fan when I really first heard of his big splash on the untelevised under card of Golota-Brewster when he first fought Briggs. Saw that fight soon after and have been a fan from that point. I have since met and spoke to Tomasz several times)
Lennox Lewis (was not always a big fan of Lewis but started following his career in the early 90s when he was supposed to fight Bowe after he crushed Razor Ruddock. As time went on I just grew a greater appreciation of his skills as a fighter and over time I became a fan)
------------
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Archie Moore (did not know a whole lot about him until I started reading "The Ageless Warrior" but started becoming an instant fan and have since become a bigger fan)
Andre Ward (have always liked Ward and was thrilled when he scored the upset Kessler-I have high hopes for Ward)

I would have guessed you'd have had Moore in your ten Rummie.
I am up in the air.
I actually had Moore in my top ten the first time I went through but opted to put Lewis there instead.
Most of my favorite fighters are more modern and guys I watched growing up. Obviously, I only saw two Hagler fights (did not see Mugabi as a kid until years later) and I only saw an older version of Larry Holmes.
But from my perspective as a fan, for the most part I honestly just have a stronger connection with fighters whose careers I watched unfold while they happened.
With Archie Moore, I already know the whole story--there are no new chapters and that's why I ultimately decided on Lewis. I watched his career as it unfolded and remember all the pre-fight build-ups, the fights, the aftermath, etc.
I never witnessed this with Moore.
I do like Moore a lot, however. He is the only boxer on my list I never saw fight during more lifetime.

How do I see Jack Chase on film?
Rent, or better still, buy the movie "The Set Up" (1949). It is a must have. If you haven't seen it already I'd be ashamed of you so don't tell me. It's a film noir starring the great Robert Ryan and it's done very well -very gritty. No music. 90% of it takes place in the dressing room. There's a trainer there. He has no speaking lines, and most of the time he's in the background. But there are a few close-ups on him and you'll recognize the face. Jack Chase not long after his last bout. And he looks badder than Bad, Bad, Bennie Briscoe.
Incidentally, the heavyweight that Ryan fought in the main event was a name-guy in the California (BMR) area in the 40s. He was another HW sparked by Burley. He admitted to Otty that he went into the dressing room after sparring with Burley, and cried.

McGrain, any fan of boxing in the 40s, will love this film as much as or better than Rocky and Raging Bull. Hell, it was made in 1949, which in my mind, is the greatest year of boxing anyhow
(proof of that assertion: [Only registered and activated users can see links])
The Set Up captures what boxing was in that era better than any film I've ever seen -and it isn't pretentious. Ryan is perfectly cast. That actor, along with Robert Mitchum and Jack Palance were true tough guys who no one wanted to play with off the set. Ryan plays a journeyman with just enough pride not beaten out of him to make a stand.
Have you seen "Rope" by Hitchcock? It moves like that, like a play in a theatre. You're in the room, a voyeur.
And of course, you got Jack Chase and other authentic guys in there to give it that crooked-nosed credibility.
No fooling... it's great.

Oh, there are Latinos on my Top10 too :good
Yep, Max Schmeling is my favourite, not because he is German though. Not even for his boxing career but because of his life. The most impressive person in boxing history imo. He wasnīt called "the good human of Hollenstedt" in his last years for nothing.

Ah, I donīt have that kind of local patriotism. I admire fighters not where they are from.
Max did many, many good things. He helped out Jou Louis and paid for his funeral, he also paid some of Langfordīs ambulance bills when he was found by some journalist in NY. He did not only help those two kids but quite a few more during the Nazi regime and stepped in against Hitler and Goebbels themselves more than once to protect his Czechen wife and Jewish manager. He himself never talked about it, this actions were always brought up by others. When he asked why he said because it isnīt worth talking about, everybody would have done these things. He also didnīt become rich just like that, he worked hard for it. He had two own successful businesses before becoming head of Coca Cola Germany. After WW2 he was the biggest benefactor of post war Germany until he died. After his wife died in the late 80s he gave most of his wealth to charity and when he died the rest followed.
The best biography I have read of him is the most recent: Schmeling - 1905-2005. Donīt know if itīs available in English though.
btw. they just showed Schmeling KOing Louis on TV on a history programm over here

:good Good list we have the same taste... I wanted to put lot of your guys on mine , just couldnt make room..... Also Love Hearns,Marquez,Nelson,Hagler,Camacho,Pintor,GOmez,Margo and even my fighters rivals(Barrera,Marquez) Pac and Morales.
:yep Our lists show really that we're true blue boxing NUTTERS:D the whole eclectic mix as they say between slickster & savage. If i'd sat & thought about it i'd have frozen up as i feel as guilty as fuck leaving out the likes Evander/MAB/Alexis & on & on & on.
It's the 1st time i've done something like this so to do the thead justice i just reeled them off in under 10 seconds so it's ovvious they've been lurking to the for-front of the sub-concious all the time.
Frome a boxing perspective i could sit & watch the slickers 24/7/365 as in Sweetpea/Hector & El Rador & watching Benitez/Hearns for me has to be the apogee of the sport. But from a personal personality perspective it was & always will be Roberto, Bazooka & JCC as these were the 3 when in my formative years i was obsessed with in emulating in all form & maner:lol:
I should think they'll be about 10/15 with a similar list with at least 5/10 of ours, generation & nationality obviously will play a part but it'll be fun as this thread progresses to analyze some lists so as to pluck out the chancers & fanboys desperate for ESB peer cred:lol::hey

P, you got that right ! Miguel Cotto is a fine, humble character. I have always admired his demeanor.A tough but modest personality. A man's man...:good

He was for a long time and I still like him. Could easily have put him into the HMs at the oment. Didnīt watch a fight of his for a long time. If Iīd watch a bit more of him again I guess heīd sneak up there. :thumbsup

I devoted weeks of last year studying Canizales, but sadly I forgot much of my learnings in the intervening months. And then I saw Gonzalez at work, and it brought back memories of the great bantamweight Canizales! Roman is sorely lacking in experience at the level he himself operates from; a step up in quality is long, long overdue, but his talents remind me of Canizales and I've said so in the past. I just wish we could see his combinations against a stronger contender.

Interesting observation. I'm shit at comparisons though.
It's not a comparison; not one that would work on more than one level anyways. Some of the more learned posters here would surely find flaws in it or dismiss it outright. I can't help but think about Canizales though seeing Gonzalez fight. Maybe it's just my personal impression of both.
