PRIDE Heavyweight Champion To Headline First Show Under New Ownership
By Loretta Hunt ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko has committed exclusively to the new ownership of M-1 Mix-Fight Championship, which has been purchased outright by an undisclosed America entertainment-related company, according to a source close to the deal who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Established in 1997, the St. Petersburg-based M-1 held over 30 events under the ownership of Russian businessman Vadim Finkelstein, also the long-time manager of the much-sought-after Emelianenko. Finkelstein is also the proprietor of the Red Devil Sports Club, a facility and team that houses numerous Russian fighters, including PRIDE veteran Roman Zentsov and former UFC middleweight Andrei Semenov.
The source confirmed the new ownership has infused a substantial amount of capital into the organization. Finkelstein and others will stay on to assist in running the company, which will continue to promote under a variation of the M-1 name. The new M-1 will take more of a global stance, and Emelianenko (26-1) will headline its inaugural event as early as January or February, possibly in the U.S., the source said.
On March 27, Ultimate Fighting Championship majority owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta bought the assets of PRIDE, only to discover Emelianenko had previously signed a non-exclusive, non-transferable contract with its former owners, Dream Stage Entertainment. As late as September, UFC president Dana White had ensured a deal with Emelianenko was imminent, though repeated negotiations between Finkelstein, colleague Apy Echteld and the Las Vegas outlet could not produce an agreement to bring the Stary Oskol resident to the famed Octagon. A major point of contention was White’s insistence Emelianenko sign an exclusive contract with the American promotion, which would exclude Emelianenko’s participation in Sambo competitions. Emelianenko is a three-time World Combat Sambo champion and ambassador for the sport in his homeland.
Undefeated in 24 fights (including one no contest), Emelianenko is widely received as the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter. The 31-year-old former Army firefighter rose to the top of PRIDE’s ranks by besting standouts like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (30-4-1) and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (22-6-2). Emelianenko submitted 2000 Olympic Greco-Roman silver medallist Matt Lindland (20-5) at Bodog Fight “Clash of the Nations” on April 14 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He has not competed since.
A formal announcement of the purchase, as well as plans for the new organization’s first event, is expected to be announced by the end of this month.

Worst. Manager. Ever.
His manager owns the league he signed with. Sounds like some Don King shit to me.
M1? What the hell is that? That sounds like an organization that would have trouble signing Tank Abott. So who the hell is Fedor going to fight? They're going to have to make 3 on 1 matches just to get Fedor some competition.

It's a shitty Russian fight league, owned by Fedor's manager and apparently now working in cooperation with Mark Cuban, the owner of HD Net. This whole thing is shady as fuck.
Fedor's manager turned down offers from the UFC, K-1 Hero's, Showtime/EliteXC, The IFL, and Bodog to sign with an organization HE owns, and who's biggest fighters are all Red Devil Sport Club members? I honestly think Fedor is getting taken for a ride here, and the fans are going to suffer.

well he's getting more money anyhow. does anyone know how much the UFC offered him? And yes the question is who the fuck is he going to fight? what a joke he legacy will always be what it is but this has to look bad when people wanted to see him and Couture go. I think Couture would have given him a good go. thumbs down Fedor!!!!!:verysad

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm definitely not excluding this possibility, actually I saw this coming. Bottom line Dana shoulda let Fedor do his SAMBO championships.

Apy Echteld has been rumoured to be involved in some very shady business. I don't think Fedor has a good management at the moment.

Bottom line is it wouldn't have mattered. And from what Dana and the Fertitas say they were willing to let Fedor fight in SAMBO and counter-offered with such a proposal. K-1 HERO's had no problem with it from day one and offered Fedor an enormous sum of money. This is plain and simple a way for Finkelstein to make a shit load of money.
He signs Fedor to a company he owns, sells the company to unnamed investors for millions, receives a cut of that and also a % of Fedor's purse, and now gets appointed to a position back in the company. This isn't about Fedor, this is about Finkelstein making millions of dollars in a game of business poker, and Fedor was his ace. Fedor gets rich too, good for him, but he's become the next Frank Shamrock, leaving the top tier of competition in his prime and will forever be a question mark.

that is bad news. but there are definitely no question marks about Fedor, he's #1 pfp until beaten by someone else.
Dana wouldn't lay down the right amount of money, thats all there is to it
So if someone should offer Wlad K 10 mill to go fight in the Japanese heavyweight division do you he should do it? I mean how much does money really mean? he should be well off by now and I would think a personal legacy would be more important to me then going and beating up bums at a Russian club. But that's just me, money is as important to me as the next person but doing what you do and being the "best" in the world and you decide to go for cash rather then facing the best in the world at what you do. I lost some respect for Fedor, but maybe there is more to the story then this.

Might end up being cheaper for the UFC to now go and purchase M-1.
Really though... this is a let down, and Fedor can no longer be considered the #1 Heavyweight in the world. I am a huge Fedor fan... but you can't be in an organization with no talent and claim to be the best. Especially considering what has happened to the other supposedly "superior" Pride fighters since entering the UFC. This sport evolves too fast to rest on things done in the years past... you are either with the times, or you get passed up.

That's nonsense. You have to KEEP PROVING IT IN THE RING AGAINST THE BEST. A person doesn't remain the #1 in the world, if he isn't always fighting the best challengers. His last wins over a legit top contender was over 2 years ago. Mark Hunt is a tough guy, but not a top contender. So, it was over 2 years ago that he beat Cro-Cop. We have all seen what has happened to Cro-Cop in the UFC.
The time has passed, and Fedor was given an opportunity to fight in the UFC for HUGE money, and he turned it down.
exactly, fighting is a what have you done for me latelt business. Jermain Taylor should have just kept fighting inferior fighters and then retired undefeated. There is alot of guys Fedor has not faced yet, Arlovski, Gonzaga, Vera, Barnett and a guy named Couture. I still can't believe he would take this rout, I'm sure he has lost alot of fans. I guess they can rewatch reruns of him beating coleman.

Fedor's manager said straight up that the UFC's offer was far more financially lucrative than any other.

This post is awful on so many different levels.
Yea, Randy is known to run from challenges. If you haven't noticed, Randy will fight anyone, and is actually one of the fighters who actually WANTS to fight the best.
Also... this isn't boxing. Randy Couture doesn't pick anyone, and doesn't have the authority to NOT give someone a title shot. The UFC makes the fights, and there is no way in hell that they wouldn't have given Fedor a title shot. Why do you think they were offering him all of that money? A title fight with him vs Couture would have been HUGE.

Good point. :good And I agree, he should no longer be considered #1. His last fight was agaisnt a friggn middleweight. I'm not taking anything away from Fedor, but he has deprived the fans on this one.

Total joke. Even if it's not a shady deal, this should end the "FEDOR #1 P4P" and even the "FEDOR #1 MMA HW" garbage.
If he isn't gonna fight anyone good, then he isn't the best. Simple as that. On top of that, ALOT of people aren't convinced he would beat Couture anyways, and when you add in that the VAST majority of Pride fighters entering UFC are getting flat-out handled....the Fedor gravy train may be grinding to a halt here :patsch
As far as I'm concerned, Couture #1 MMA HW! Until, possibly, someone dethrones him.

Seriously stfu with this bandwagon of Couture #1HW. He's great because he beat Sylvia and Gonzaga AT HIS AGE, but putting him as the best HW in the world with his record... gtfo here.
