When you can punch like Earnie you've always got a chance especially against a guy like Ingemar who didn't exactly have a legendary chin.

That said I'd expect Johansson to win as he was a better fighter than Earnie in nearly every respect but he would want to jump on him early like he did Machen for safety's sake,or he could end up star shaped with one punch.

Johansson KO 3.

I thaught I didnīt need to say that, but OK, I say it now. A puncher like Shavers has EVERYTIME a chance head-to-head, but usually we talk about both at their best, thatīs why I predicted an early Johansson- KO... :thumbsup

If Johansson comes out like he did against Patterson 1,or against Machen he wins no doubt about it,and probably very quickly.Earnie had a poor defense, poor recuperative abilities, and an ordinary chin which is a recipe for disaster against a puncher of the calibre of Ingemar Johansson.

I just watched his slaughter of Eddie Machen again recently and all I can say is fuck I'm glad it wasn't me copping that.:dead

This has to be a joke thread right?Well most of the threads i see here are a joke.Johansson a 180 pound fighter with no chin who best win in his career came against Floyd Patterson a natural 169 pounder with no chin. Not only that Patterson still knocked him out twice.Johansson isn't a heavyweight and i don't see any 180 pound cruiserweight with a glass jaw lasting more than one rounds with Shavers.
Why would I be joking about a matchup between these two?
They both punched hard as hell, and both men had suspect chins.
This is the classic forum, here we discuss old timers and current fighters if that's the case. If you disrespect old champions as you're doing, and implying that my thread is nothing but a mere joke, then I suggest you stay out of this thread and supposedly even this part of the forum.
Thank you for your insight, I enjoyed reading your opinion.

Earnie was the harder puncher, especially with the left hook, but he was also a front runner, as Jerry Quarry pointed out. Ingo was disqualified in the Olympics for staying the hell away from Ed Sanders, and we've all seen how he continually retreated cautiously against Machen before drawing Eddie into his right.

This matchup could go either way, but my guess here is that Johansson would drag Shavers into deep water, and drown him there, as he managed to do to Cavicchi and Erskine. He proved against Snoek that he could get off the deck to survive when seriously stunned, dancing away from the follow-up assault, and go on to win. Shavers had considerably more difficulty recovering from such damage.

Earnie had underrated handspeed, but he was freguently a wide-open slugger, while Ingo sometimes displayed Schmeling's characteristic degree of caution in his approach.(Some would describe this as timidity.) Patterson threw much shorter and quicker punches than Shavers. (The first right hand he decked Ingo with in their rubber match was about as short and sharp as a cross could be.)

The cruiserweight argument against Johansson does not wash in this instance. Ingo was a 200 pounder, just as Jimmy Young was when he drew with Earnie, and as Quarry was when he swamped Shavers. Also, Jimmy Ellis was under 200 pounds, and it looked like he was about to take Earnie out when the referee broke them out of the corner Shavers was trapped in (giving Earnie the space and opportunity to attempt that right uppercut which knocked Jimmy senseless). Johansson wiped out modern sized HW Hein Ten Hoff in a single minute of action.

As I think more and more about this intriguing pairing, I find myself leaning with more conviction in favor of Ingo's chances. But I wouldn't blink, and I wouldn't hit the fridge for a brew while this warfare was in progress.:beer:nono

This fight could go either way. Really, it depends on who lands their big bomb first on the suspect chin of the other guy. Shavers would have size advantages and he fought in a more competitive era. I'd go with an early KO for Earnie.

Ingo would back up and plink with his jab trying to draw Ernie in.

At some point Ingo would have to stand and fight. Ingo would need to get in 2 right hands..one to stun and stop Ernie, and one to point him down.

The problem is Ernie had a more variety of powerful punches.

I see the same picture as the Shavers-Norton fight, with Ingo a crumpled mass laying in a corner by the ropes.

I'd lean towards Johansson here. I think he'd get to Shavers first, early to. :yep

Depends on who lands first.Probably Ingo, but could be Earnie. And it's not lasting to the fifth round.

That is probably the right answer in as much as ther is one.

Ingo might just be the pick to draw first.

I think that '59 Ingo would get to Earnie before Earnie got to him. It would be the swiftest with the mostest.

It's obvious, lets just weight them and see if Ingo can get over the magical 180 barrier.
