The average guy in britain will have heard of Khan. Its just such a joke though. I was in my boozer last saturday night and khan vs lawton was on. I commented to a mate that khan aint actually that good yet to which he laughed knowingly and said yes he is. we then had a convo with my mates and they thought khan is the best in his division and that lawton was world class.

Many people in britain will have heard of hatton ,a few calzaghe but none of my mates knows who mayweather pacqiuao or even de la hoya is.how many sports are there where people dont have a clue who the best are. The problem is the british media. they only cover and promote british fighters and hype up guys, particularly khan and people end up thinking hes the GOAT. I dont know why, as in other sports the media cant cover the true world class operators and not the shitty level british ****** fighters. its the only sport i can think of where the finest operators are shunned in favorof some godawful brits. discuss

It's good that they cover British boxing first, we need to support our home scene, but I agree that they should cover the overseas bouts more.
A factor is that so many fights are at antisocial times/PPV, that the average sports fan isn't going to happen apon them.

hear, hear the media spend that much time bummin up the hype, that they dont have any air play for the greats, and the public should be taught who's who and be able to make their own decisions........ not told who the media want to be the best......... i can assure you WHEN khan starts being beat up the the khan nuthuggers will drop him,
and they will move on to (and add the pressure on to) the next up and coming hopeful

even on bbc boxing it took them 8 months to change john simpson to british champion on the british champions list and have never once put a report on any of his fights even the last 1 with morris there wasnt a report about it because junior witter was fighting on the same night.

My boss in work is a casual sports fan. He knows who Amir Khan is but has never heard of Joe Calzaghe. Nuff sed.

it's sheer ignorance.
I've said the same things to casual sports fans, that Khan has a glass chin and in massively overhyped and is very unlikely to become elite at world level...and people scoff at you...they know better as they read BBC online every week:patsch
you would think the Limond fight is a wake up call...but most fools are still getting strung along.

The average person doesn't really follow boxing.

Who wants to be Mr or Ms average anyway! :smile

They are more likely to follow football etc

Saw some interesting figures recently - BBC Match of the Day's highlight show on Saturday (with only two fixtures to show) attracted 800,000 more viewers when it went head to head with Khan's last fight live on ITV.

Khan won an olympic medal at a young age so that makes him a household name. Is boxing in the UK better off without Khan? I don't think so -as soon as Khan won a medal there was a rush of young ppl joining boxing gyms and the funding for amateurs have improved as well!!

I call it 'The Khan Effect'!

"Hatton is fighting Mayweather isn't he."

"Yes, he is also getting beat."

"I think Hatton will win y'know."

"Have you ever seen Mayweather fight?"

"No."

i don't know, even some "casual sports fans" at my workplace have wised up a little. they still watch the fights though because they do tend to be exciting.

hatton's as well known as khan here, but then again i live in manchester. no-one knows john murray or jamie moore though.

I very rarley get to talk boxing away from esb, whenever I bring bring up roy jones jr as my favourite boxer, I see a confused look on their face as if to say "roy who?".
