I voted for Castillo bc out of 60+ fights he was never KD from a chin shot. and his traded war with Corrales is just incredible. Baldomir got a tremondous chin too. Judah got a big punch and even bigger punch on plodders, hits Baldomir flush repeatly and couldn't make Baldomir budge. I think Judah got scared after that and begins running. Floyd was smarter about it and abort mission from risking damaging his hand and settled for a UD. He knows you can't knock everyone out and he is not capable to ko someone like that at 147 but what really takes the cake is Forrest at 154 and was a huge 147lber that had Mosely bouncing around the ring with his power can't even dent Baldomir's chin.... and have the reach to do it for 12 rounds is jaw dropping.

Definitely, Floyd's hands couldn't match his head but I wouldn't consider his chin better tested than Ouma's against Taylor.

Baldo then Hopkins
It is tough for me to decide on this, because some guys have proven that they can take a huge shot or a lot of punishment, simply because their defense isn't as good and we've seen it happen. I have no idea if Hopkins or Mayweather could stand up to a ton of punishment, because I rarely see them get hit.
I am tempted to vote for Castillo, Baldomir, or Hopkins. But then I think we have to seriously think about Mayorga too, because what kind of IDIOT gives Tito Trinidad free shots to his chin! He absorbed a hell of a beating before folding against Trinindad, and I think it's only fair to acknowledge that Oscar fought him when he was further past it, and far less resilient than in his prime.

I voted Shane Mosley. B-Hop is a master at rolling with punches and keeping his chin tucked so he rarely absorbs the full sting of punches. Unlike Mosley who takes shots right on the chin without blinking, and has only been seriously hurt after a nasty clash of heads. Baldo getting staggered by Luciano Perez and dropped hard by Jose Luis Cruz leads me to believe his chin may not be as granite as advertised.

Baldomir. Forrest hurt and dropped Mosely. Forrest teed off on Baldomir for 12 rounds and didn't significantly hurt him. But there are a few guys on there that are all close enough together to be practically indistinguishable. DLH, Baldomir, Mosely, Castillo all have damn near unbreakable chins.

For one, Vernon Forrest hurt Shane Mosley soon after a nasty clash of heads which Shane may have still been feeling the effects from. Two, Vernon Forrest had pretty damn good power at 147. At 154, where Baldomir faced him..not so much, especially after his various surgeries and injuries.
By that same notion, Jose Luis Cruz dropped Baldomir hard and nearly had him out. Luciano Perez staggered him twice. Cruz never came close to hurting Mosley and I can't for the life of me see Mosley getting hurt by a journeyman like Perez.

Bernard Hopkins. He has been at the pinnacle of the sport for 15 years now, has had so many world title fights with so many great fighters, he went 12 rounds with a prime Roy Jones, he is a career middle who has fought at the top level at lightheavy, and he has been on the canvas only twice, and that was at least partially due to high altitude conditions. Guys like Trinidad, Pavlik and Tarver couldn't put a dent in him. His chin is more proven than any other on the list. I remember specifically him taking a huge clean hook to the head in the second Antwun Echols fight, and just brushing it off. It was highly impressive.
You should have James Toney on that list though. He blows everyone on it out of the water with regards to chin. He is on another level to that list, he stands alongside guys like LaMotta and Chuvalo.

Despite the fact that he takes so few clean shots? I don't think so. His defense is one of the best ever. Shane, on the other hand, regularly trades with motherfuckers and has only been down once in his 17 year pro career.

Yes, but the time he was down he was very, very nearly out. Hopkins has never in his entire career been anywhere close to as affected by any punch.
James Toney is in another league to both of them chin-wise.

JT does have a world class chin, although a lot of that has to do with how relaxed he is and his ability to roll with punches.

I agree, Hopkins hardly takes any punches. So what? The thread-question isn't asking who takes the most clean punches, it's asking who has the best chin, ie who takes a clean shot best. Hopkins takes a clean shot better than Shane because Shane has been very nearly knocked out whereas Bernard never has been even remotely close to that condition from a punch. Hopkins has been hit cleanly with the best punches of Echols and Taylor, and never went down, and those two were decent bangers at 160. Guys like Jones, Trinidad, Tarver and Pavlik did sneak a clean shot or two in on Hopkins, and never came close to hurting him never mind stopping him. It's stupid to say he never has been hit cleanly, of course he has, just not often. And to say he never trades bombs is silly too, someone with a B-Hop avatar should know he often traded bombs in the 90s before he got too old to go 12 rounds at a rapid pace and switched to a more defensive style. Would a Vernon Forrest standard puncher/fighter at middleweight have any version of Hopkins doing the chicken dance, even if he did land cleanly?? Think again chum.
Toney has a better chin because... he has a better chin. Whether he utilizes a shoulder roll is irrelevant, as is his composure, the fact is the guy has been standing toe-to-toe with the best middles to heavys for 20 years, and has never been close to being stopped. He has never been as hurt as Mosley was vs Forrest, and he has been in the ring as a fat old former middleweight trading shots with a prime Sam Peter. Another level entirely.
elTerrible
01-06-2010, 09:01 AM
Its hard to say because some guys never really got hit very good like Hopkins. The best shot he ever took was a cheap shot on the break from Echols and he took it well.
Now mayorga has given free shots to Trinidad and Forrest. Seriously he gave trinidad like 2 or 3 free shots and just sat there and ate them, he is fucking nuts. And it took a body shot for Trinidad to eventually stop him.
DLH also deserves a mention, especially now that Pac's power has been proven. Pac landed on him at will all night and he was never floored. Look at how Hatton and Cotto reacted to the same punches. Cotto was dropped and he he lasted longer than DLH because he was able to use movement to get away where as DLH was just standing there takign it all night.

No offense but I doubt this kind of thread. Everyone will sure have their basis depending if these fighters on the list already got KOed or took a knee in each respective boxing careers. Some we may know have fought good adversaries and some were easy pickers, and some were simply good on their defensive skills.

I voted for Mosley because i feel he has been in with the best punchers and has only ever been hurt once. He also has a bit of a leaky defence although not on a par with Baldomir and Margarito's face block. I dont think you can vote for a guy like Hopkins or Mayweather who have such great defence.

I Might be mistaken but I think oscar wins this poll by a long way , he has been in with the biggest punchers , and highest quality in this group , and has been stopped only by a body shot , Baldomirs Head might be hard , but he hasnt really fought any big punchers in their primes.

Of those guys, Baldomir, but I'd still put Glen Johnson ahead of any of them. He's faced a lot of prime big punchers, has a style where he gets hit in the face a lot, and has never been down or seriously hurt that I know of.

Yeah, good pick. Only time I remember seeing him seriously hurt was to the body against Hopkins. Though Tarver did seem to stun him on a few occassions in their first fight, but nothing too serious. I know Johnson was reportedly down against Omar Sheika, but from what I heard it was a bogus call.

He has never been as hurt as Mosley was vs Forrest, and he has been in the ring as a fat old former middleweight trading shots with a prime Sam Peter. Another level entirely. You clearly stated that Hopkins' chin is the most tested. It isn't. Even when guys do manage to slip one in past his world class defense, which is rare, he always keeps his chin tucked. Never do you see him throwing wide hooks with his chin up in the air, etc. like Shane regularly does. Sure, he takes a clean punch here and there, but never enough to accumulate a ton of damage. How often do you see a guy go down from one punch without any accumulation of damage beforehand? Very rarely. I do believe that Bernard has a good chin, but there's a reason he protects it so well, and to say it's the most tested of anyone's on that list is laughable.
I've already agreed that JT has a world class chin....And while the fact that he's so relaxed and rolls punches so well doesn't diminish his chin, it has a lot to do with the fact that he hasn't been KTFO. Let's not forget Sam Peter put him on his ass with a single jab, and why did that happen? Because he was finally able to hit him flush on the chin without JT using his defensive skill to better absorb the impact. He walked right into it with his chin up.
Shane doesn't have nearly as good a defense as either of these guys, so he's been hit clean far more than either of them by some pretty big punchers P4P. He's been down once in his career on accumulated damage against a naturally bigger guy. His chin is world class....At least comparable to Toney's and better than Bernard's.

I'm gonna go with DLH. The guy's taken big shots from guys that can bang. I still can't believe he just stood there and took it all night from Pacquiao and didn't go down, especially after seeing the way Manny dropped Hatton and Cotto.
