View Full Version : Leave Sam Peter alone!

I know everybody wants talk shit about Peter because he got knocked down 3 times and wasnt able to knockout a top 20 guy like Mccline, yet no one will give Sam any praise for being able to get through that tough 3rd round and eventually beat Mccline. Peter was able to effectively box his way to victory and go the body quite effectively, which helped him to tire Mccline even more as the championship rounds approached. Maybe Sam Peters power and chin were a little overrated, but that still doesnt take away from the fact he could still give any heavywieght trouble and comback and win in a tough fight.

Is this going to be like the Chris Crocker-Brittany Spears case? an upset, enraged fan insulted by the criticism their idol gets. :yep Peter is tough guy and he proved it against Mccline, if Peter would of known his oppenent earlier he would of been better prepared, he would of been working with sparring partners that were around 6'6 not 6'2.

He's not being criticized from the Mcline fight alone, but many fans I know were never on the bandwagon in the first place because there's nothing special about the guy. All he has going for him is his brute strength but power means nothing when you can't used them affectively. Most of his knockdowns come from rabbit punches. When's the last time he landed a flush shot to someone's face??? hardly ever...
He's crude, doesn't know how to punch properly, and fights without a plan...
Sam Peter is a B level.. No boxer is perfect, Wlad has a blarring weakness too, anytime he gets hit with a hard punch he has a panic attack and starts clinching. I understand Peter has to work on a few things, but hes still young and will rebound from this better than ever.

I give Peter credit for getting up and toughing out a victory but let's be real here. McCline was gassed after the third round and did almost nothing from then on.
If McCline was a better finisher or had better stamina he may have very well finished Peter.

The whole issue stems from Peter being overrated in the first place. If he were put in proper perspective, this victory would have more meaning and be a better indication of his heart and place in the heavyweight mix. Without the hype, getting up from three knockdowns and thoroughly outboxing an opponent would be a huge achievement (marquez vs. pacman anyone) but since people was supposed to be the next foreman/tyson/liston, it looks sloppy and pathetic. seriously, this was a good victory for the REAL peter and an eye opener only for the HYPE peter

Leave him alone, he isn't hype anymore!
Don't put him against Wald again he stands no chance at all! Anybody with an above average power and chin could beat Wlad, Im not saying they will, but a guy like Peter does have decent chance of beating Wlad.

No boxer is perfect, True Wlad has a blarring :huh also glaring weakness too, anytime he gets hit with a hard punch he has a panic attack and starts clinching. Amazing, he's like most other fighters, except stupid ones that try the I wasn't hurt act - and often end up getting hurt even worse. Ali clinched a lot when he was tagged too - must have been having a panic attack  I understand Peter has to work on a few things, but hes still young and will rebound from this better than ever. For how long will Peter be young? 30, 35? And not sure why but many posters are saying he's shorting his age. That he's already 30ish. Sure Peter might rebound as you say, but his stock has dropped with many posters.

Sure Peter might rebound as you say, but his stock has dropped with many posters. His stock dropped a little in my mind as well, I just feel everybodys entitled to one bad night, a night he was still able to comeback and gain a victory. I think will have a better idea of were Peter stands after his next fight, when hes better prepared.

Anybody COULD beat anybody on any given day/night anywhere - what's your point?! Peter has a puncher's chance, not much more. And now that Wlad is just entering his prime, is more confident than he's ever been, and has "figured Peter out" he will fuck the dude up if they fight again... I think he probably would beat Peter 7 times out of 10, Im hoping Peter could imply some of his rough house tactics in his attack against Wlad. Wlad has not been tested in 2 years, so who knows how he will react against getting hit by a fighter with power again.

But he already proved he couldn't really hurt Wald for 12 rounds and one
more round and he would be finished. Not mention he was outboxed clarly.
Maybe he should fight Wlad for say ... 150 rounds and then we will know for
sure if he is going to knock him out ... say maybe between 70 and 100 round?

I have watched the Peter/Wlad fight at 10-15 times already and its clear to see Wlad was a hurt by Peter a couple times in the match, Peter being 25 at the time seemed to smother his punches instead setting himself up to throw effective punches. Wlads clinching helped him to come away with a tough victory, I give Manny more credit than I do Wlad.

Lets put it this way.
Corrie Sanders shocked the world when he dispatched of Waldo, knocking him to the canvas three times in one round to score the TKO.
Lennox Lewis was also dispatched in brutal fashion by 14-1 underdog Hasim Rahman, a man just like McCline, who was thought to be "done".
Jameel McCline, another longshot, drops Sam Peter 3 times but can't finish him. Sam still wins despite taking several hard brutal shots.
If people still believed in Lewis, and still believe in Waldo, then they have some serious splainin to do in regards to losing faith in Sam Peter. :smoke

Never ceases to amaze me how many times Wlad critcs or haters :| bring up clinching - as if he invented it  Fighters from Jack Johnson (yeah it was different then, blah blah) to Ali were clinch masters. It's like one poster said in a thread some time ago, the Wlad haters just want him to stick his chin out there and say "hit me". I understand some posters want him to lose asap (and the reasons why), but he isn't going to make it that easy.

Wlad is an amazing fighter, but he can be beat just like anyone else and his chin is weak spot.

For what it's worth, I agree with the premise - people are jumping on the anti-Peter bandwagon WAY too quick off this performance. But this is VERY common among boxing fans. Boxing is very much a "what have you done for me lately" sport.

I don't think it is unjustified. The Peter nuthuggers were ALL saying Peter by KO and KO early. Alot of us have been saying since day 1 that while peter is good....he is over rated. I gave Wlad credit when he prevaled 2 years ago against Peter, but before that Wlad had a history of being knocked down very easily and Wlad wasnt known for having solid chin, when Peter was knocked down 3 times it came more as shock to people because Peter proved he had a strong chin before hand.

I hear what you're saying but that "power & rage" that he showed earlier in his career was against some very weak competition. As soon as he stepped up to the upper tier he didn't look so special.
Questions: Did you concider Peter the number 2 HW before his fight with McCline? Where do you rank him now?
He very well may KO Oleg, although I doubt it, but where would you rank him if he does?

He very well may KO Oleg, although I doubt it, but where would you rank him if he does? I agree most of the power showed by Peter were against C and D oppenents, he also showed glimpses of it against Wlad 2 years ago.
As far as your other question goes, I ranked Peter at barely 2 before the Mccline fight and now at a sound 3 after the fight. I like Chagaev and now he is 2 in my rankings, if Peter destroys Maskaev in a couple months he goes back to 2, because you got to fight to earn the higher ranking.
