I just bought one of those body weight that shows your weight, body fat % and water retention. I am 6'3" weight approximately 190 lbs.
My body weight is 20.1 which according to that little chart that came with the weight is in a normal range but there is something I dont get. I remeber Hopkins speaking at press conf. and bragging that he has 2% body fat. How is this possible? and should my goal be to lose more body fat in exchange for muscle to get in better shape and be more healthy?

3% body fat is essential to life, 2% is impossible.
You wasted your money on that thing.

2% body fat is not healthy for any human being, it is not advisable at all, you would have many complications, also your gadget is not accurate at all do not rely on it

I didn't say it showed 2% body fat. Mine showed 20.1 which is normal according to the chart that came with it. My question is what body fat % is ideal and what % body fat boxers usually carry on ?

Those things suck so bad, I used to have one and it would be off by like +-3% every time i got on. just get some calipers and learn how to use them. I think 7% body fat is probably the most healthy, at least thats what my wrestling team was told in highschool :)

Yeah, I know 4% body fat is what body builders have.
I have 6-7% and I work my ass off for it.

Guys, 6% is about the lowest anyone can maintain from day to day in a healthy state. This is a real genetics issue too, usually it's only ultra fit afro americans (afros have the lowest average natural bf%) who are able to maintain this level.
World class sprinters and some boxers have about this level.
3% is about the lowset a bodybuilder will get directly before a show. This state can onlyt be maintaned for a very short time however, in this state bodybuilders find it very hard to think and are borderline delirious. Some of the guys I sponsor (bodybuilders) found it very hard to maintain much under 6% for more than a week.

Yeah, I influx from 6-7% due me some times having to skip a day or 2 of workout due to school. But I also have an absurdly good metabolism, so that helps. I eat about 6 meals a day and I'm normally hungry only and hour after I eat.
I remember lampley saying hopkins has a 27 in. waist - it was 26-28, I forgot, but I was thinking damn....I'm 29"

Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney never worried about these things. Why is it you need to be concerned about your percentage of body fat? All you have to do is live a healthy lifestyle and get in boxing shape. Your body will naturally take care of the rest.

But having lower bodyfat % shows off your guns more :rofl , other than that, I don't really see why its too necessary to stay too low. I'm under 10% naturally, so I don't worry about it anyways. But you're right, if you eat right and work out and have 20%(probably not going to happen...) then that's most likely the right % for you.

I have 6-7% and I work my ass off for it.There's less than a handful of BB's that get as low as 5-6% and it can only be done for an hour or so or they risk permanent internal damage as well as death from dehydration. Prime example being Paul Dillett.
Im going to hazard a guess that your figure is nonsense. No one can maintain those levels unless they're malnourished or stupid. There is no functional benefit at all by having a BF that low.

When i was 18 I used to be 175lbs with a 11% BF. Apart from having a ridiculous 6 pack i was streak of wiry weak piss. I only felt stronger as i got heavier and used more resistance exercises. If your intention is to engage in sport a BF that low isn't helpful.

I had around 7-8% bodyfat once in my life(I don't know how accurate the test was). I competed at 19 yo in a bodybuilding show. I've never been more miserable. I sustained that for a very short period of time.

boxers get it cos they train their asses off- but if you re aiming to hit a number for the fuck of it- it can get a bit obsessive and unhealthy. i got those scales too- and was initially 16 percent- had a six pack but wasnt cut up, i d eat , train and live to get it sub 10- was ripped up but and only could maintain it for a while once i started living a more balanced routine.
with that being said though, it is a useful yardstick to see progress- if you re training for trainings sake, and not body fat goals. my trainer said it best, be happy with what youv e got, we can all get sub 7 percent - but most of us have to suffer and kill ourselves for it- and in the end its only for a moment. even bodybuilders and actors, and boxers are only that ripped for a moment, a show, a photoshoot, a fight, a movie, etc.

Bodyfat readings are only relevant in comparison to yourself...that made no sense did it...how can I put it...
Your scale is fine. It probably doesn't display your actual bodyfat %, but if you always use that scale, it should accurately reflect increases/decreses.
I have one as well. I also use calipers, and they usually read 1-1.5% higher than the scale. (Scale says I'm 9.4%, calipers say 10.5-11%). You just look t it every day and see if the percentage is going up or down. Underwater weighing is the most accurate way to do it, but why would you want to go through that?
But you can't compare your bodyfat readings with someone else's. They might get a reading from another scale, a set of calipers, etc. And all readings have a small window of error anyway.
But if it's at 20% and you're an athlete then yeah you could stand to lose some pounds for sure.
