My Achilles tendon (or whatever sits in my heel) aches terribly after jogging/skipping/boxing. I assume lifting my rear heel when boxing has done it in. I'm almost never flat-footed and move around quite a bit.

Any similar experiences? How'd you deal with it?

i have a family history of ankle/leg problems and although both of my ankles suck, my right one is worse and among the constant sprains i've actually dislocated it sparring before. i always assumed that the constant ankle motion/pushing/proper punch mechanics just resulted in extra wear n tear that eventually take a toll on the joint, but that's just an assumption. i figure it's something like tennis elbow would be, just an overuse kinda thing. at the end of the day just rest and let your body heal a bit.

a good exercise that i do when my ankles bug me is to imagine writing the alphabet with my big toe. it puts your ankles through a great range of motion and really helps tons, especially if it feels sore or stiff or anything like that.

I've never had issues with my achilles tendon, but I do get the usual tendonitis or sprains every now and then.

Here's how I normally deal with them:

You could also try over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen, that is if you don't have issues with them.

^ Cheers.

Ibuprofen wasn't enough, so I finally dropped by the doc's. Wrong footwear and over-training, he said. Achilles tendon is badly inflamed. More meds and physiotherapy.

Never make the mistake of continuing training. I made the injury that much worse... Who knows how long I'll be out of commission this time.

i actually had the same problem. I think i was extra careful to keep my foot flat, while hitting bags and such. problem seemed to go away in a week. And i stopped running that week as well.

Sorry to hear that.

I hope you heal soon so you can get back to training. It's definitely one of those injuries that get worse if you don't allow it to fully heal.

I actually met a retired boxer who had a ruptured achilles tendon years ago, it apparently ended his career at the time.

Hmmm.... if you're taking legal narcotics... must be nice! LOL!
