Hatton looked very good, doing his thing like he always does, but I don't think he will get much credit for this win because JLC looked like crap, a shell of his former self, in other words, a shot fighter. Don't get me wrong, I like Hatton and he's the best at 140 right now, but I feel this win doesn't mean much to his career. It's a shame that Ricky's not comfortable @ 147, because there are great fight to be made up there.
On a side note the hatton fans were great, singing and making a great atmosphere for the fight, I guess that goes to show, how much of a following Hatton has back home. And also I lmao when I saw Ricky with a Ricky Fatton shirt at the interview.

I was a little suprised at how quick the commentary team were to write the win off.
As crap as Castillo looked, it was a great shot that put him down (for the first time in his career) and its not like he was on a run of 4 straight losses.
Not that long ago, he was one of the best fighters on the planet to a lot of people.
That classic with Corrales was only 2 years ago.
The commentary team were making out as though he was Roberto Duran fighting William Joppy.

I don't really base my expressions on the hbo comentators, because they can be biased, but on what i saw. Castillo looked awful since the begining, off balance, weak and slow. I'm not saying this is not a good win for hatton, just that Castillo(in his current state) is not the best fighter he has defeated, and I was surprised at how much castillo has declined since his fights with chico, and I didn't watch his previous fight, in which he looked bad also.

Firstly, i watch this fight in a bar so I had the luxury of not being able to hear the HBO guys.
What I saw was a shot castillo. he's no where near the top of his game....or even the division. He's not done though and if managed right could beat some known guys in big fights. much the same way gatti made abunch of money fighting guys like durin, bajaudo, damgard, and JJL before losing to a couple of real guys.
So yes ricky hatton whipped a shot fighter. But too be honest...in my opinion he looked so good doing it that it doesn't really matter. I've always been a ricky hatton non-believer until last night. He looked so sharp and so tough and so technically skilled that I went from "this guy will get embarrassed against malanaggi, forget about PBF'" to "this guy's gona pull a jake lemotta or a gene fullmer and beat this guy.".
Oh and as a side note: I'd be suprised if anyone with half a boxing brain pays much attention to HBO guys most of the time. I don't have cable so I watch most fights a the bar where u can't hear the HBO guys and I have to say that its vastly improved my ability to analyze a fight. Because I don't have a constant stream of biase bullshit bombarding my ears.

I know a good liver shot when I see one, and that was one Hell of a liver shot! They can't take that away from him!

I saw a Castillo who was roughed up by a bigger fighter. He didnt hold any advantages like he did at Lightweight. He was constantly made to fight off his back foot. And fight on the ropes. And he didnt know what to do. He looked more confused than shot to me. Hatton didnt let him breath and kept the pressure very early on. I believe Hatton even hurt him with a shot to the temple early on within the first 20 seconds of the fight.
It was a great win for Hatton. Castillo isnt prime. But he is far from shot.

I agree he didn't look as bad as they made him out to be but u do have to admit that at times he kinda looked like he was trying to find himself.
And I think that is how he got caught. Cause if you look at the fight again castillo sees the shot coming from the corner of his eye, thinks its a hook coming for his head, turns his shoulder to block it and rolls his body right into the punch. Watch it again. The only that can be said is fuck that had to hurt!
At times castillo did look quite capable though. And I think by going on and on about how shot castillo was the HBO guys (max in particular) took too much away from the greatness of ricky's preformance.

No doubt.
Still, I don't see why the Hattonites are so defensive. Castillo looked like a shot fighter from the opening bell. Hatton did what he was supposed to do. He didn't pussyfoot around, he said Castillo felt weak and out of rhythm... he put him out early.
What would be a negative is if Castillo looked like crap and Hatton kept him around for 12 rounds.

exactly, Hatton is a great fighter but castillo is not the same guy he was 2 years ago, but like o_money says he can still make some fights against lesser opponents.

You might be on to something here.
And I also didn't think he look mentally prepared for the fight. Did you see how much he was smiling before the fight! It looked to me like he lacked focus. And really wasn't on his game. proabably for a number of reason's....only one of which is milage.
I think he will probably be very disapointed with he preformance. And if he still has the will to fight I expect him to be back sooner then most think.

maybe, I think the main point is Hatton looked too good to be unworthy of praise. Explain it however you may.

Like I said, nobody is saying he's unworthy of praise or that it wasn't a good performance. Hatton did what a world class fighter is supposed to do with a poor opponent.
All I, and most people, are saying is that the win doesn't really PROVE anything other than Hatton is a world class 140 champ... which most people already knew. We've all been screaming to see him against a live, young, world class fighter to show if he's GREAT.

I didn't think he was a world class fighter until last night.
Thats why I'm so pumped now that he's proved it too me. Cause he's got the style to give PBF problems.
All I have to say is fullmer, basillio, lematta and now hatton? I think I see a pattern!

Well, I guess if you were questioning his world class status, he showed he knows how to close the doors on someone who is out of their league in convincing fashion. The primary question answered to me was if his lifestyle had caught up to him.... he looked to be in great shape, but with the fight ending in round 4 I think it hasn't been definitively proven that his stamina is what it was a few years ago. I'm leaning toward saying yes it is as long as he trains hard for every fight and stays active.... he definitely needs to stay active.

hum, I'm starting to think we didn't see the same castillo (whatever). I'll agree with the stamina question that was always a worry of mine and it still has yet to be answered. And the "ability to take punishment" question has never been answered.
The one knock I have for ricky hatton is that to my knowledge you cannot say that he has ever been in a fight where he has sustained a significant amount of damage. nor has he been in a fight where he's had to take more punishment then his opponent to get the win. That's a bit unusual for a guy with his style. Or at least the questions that get answered in those kinda fights are the questions you'd want to know the answers too before making a final judgement on a guy like hatton.

watch his british title fight when he was young when he fought a much older guy (a man really ricky was barely a boy), the guy was called john thaxton, its not a world class fight, as ricky was still green as hell, but his face looked like rocky in rocky 1 after that fight.

That's exactly why I think it needs to be pointed out that Castillo looked like a shot fighter. The guy that fought Mayweather and the guy that fought Hatton are worlds apart. I think Hatton would have beaten the earlier version, too, but not in the same fashion.
It's just a stupid comparison.

Its bollocks. Ricky buckled his knees in the first 20 seconds. People overlook it because over the pulldown. Hatton came out of the gates FAST and always looked stronger. Castillo does sometimes start slow then warm up. He clearly looked to be warming up in the third. Hatton even admitted this in the corner in between the rounds.
In the end Castillo was caught with some horrid.
