Why I Feel Holyfield has a chance to win this weekend.
When people hear that Holyfield is fighting for a title this weekend, several things typically come to mind in most.
1. He's too old at 44 years old (45 next week).
2. Who has he fought to deserve a title shot?
3. Wasn't he banned from fighting because he was so terrible a few years back?
4. Listen to him talk, he shouldn't be fighting.
However all of those are, while seemingly logical at face value, inherently flawed.
First of all, the fact that he's 44 is irrelevant. George Foreman defeated Michael Moorer for a belt years back when he was already 45, and a lot of people would argue that Moorer was a helluva lot better than Sultan Ibragimov.
Secondly, he hasn't fought anyone? That's more an indictment of the heavyweight division competition than Holyfield. He's fought who has been put in front of him, and he's stepped in when the original opponent dropped out. It's not Holyfield's fault that the only legitimately decent opponents were already fighting people.
Thirdly, he was banned because he went through a losing streak and got outfought by Larry Donald several years ago. This was because Holyfield had a shoulder injury that he never let heal He kept fighting because he realized he was getting older, and as he kept fighting, the shoulder kept getting worse culminating in the Donald fiasco. So he was off for two years, the shoulder is completely healed, and if you've seen any of his comeback fights, you'd notice that his skills are back. He's not as fast as he used to be, but he's able to fight again. The Shoulder injury threw off his reflexes and speed.
Now that he's 100% he's able to fight again and there's no issues.
As for his slurred speech, and whatnot, he's passed all the tests he's been given.
As for the fight, he's not fighting Wladimir Klitschko here. He's fighting Sultan Ibragimov, who while a decent fighter, is not the type of fighter you have to really worry about. His power is alright, nothing spectacular, his boxing skills are admirable but once again, not anything amazing. If anything, out of the belt holders, I feel Holyfield's best chances would have been against Ruslan Chagaev or Ibragimov. I don't think he defeats Wlad, who is just too big and too strong for him, and I'm not sure how he would face against Samuel Peter either, who I think may be a bit too strong for him, although his endurance leave something to be desired.
Bottom line is this. I absolutely think Holyfield can go to Russia and win the belt. There's always the chance that the American Fighter will get screwed over in the judging, which has happened numerous times in Russia and Germany (which is why a lot of US fighters won't go there), but I think that not only does Holyfield have a shot at winning, I don't think that Ibragimov has the power to hurt him very bad.

Sultan will toy with the old fart and KO him or beat him mercilessly
for 12 hideous rounds. If you are sadistically inclined or just plain
don't like old people by all means watch this fight. Sultan is a young,
tough ex-soviet fighter with a tremendous amatuer pedigree, very
fast hands and underated power. This fight won't be pretty.

You forgot to add in something.
...arguably lost to (and was dropped by) Ray Austin.
Sultan is terribly overrated. He IS a well skilled HW, but has decent power at best, is slow (TERRIBLY FLATFOOTED and plodding), and measures his shots too much.
He beat Shannon Briggs and suddenly became the second coming of Ivan Drago.
If Evander was 60 I might still pick him. The guy defies logic still being this skilled at this age. Still has the chin, still has the ring intelligence, and still has the skills. Lost a step or four in speed, power (tho still strong as a bull) and stamina. But hell, he is still EVANDER THE REAL DEAL HOLYFIELD!!!!
Holy by late TKO or UD.
(only bad part about it is, if he wins, I dont think he can beat ANY of the other title holders...and would get hurt VERY badly vs Wlad....)

Holy looked reasonably decent against ancient and never very good
Lou Saverese. Throw out the Austin fight. Everybody has a bad
day at the office. Sultan was fat, overconfident and employed bad
tactics in that fight. He's corrected those flaws under the direction
of Jeff Mayweather. Sultan has fast combos and hits hard. Youth
will be served.

Don't forget Foreman almost lost this fight. And while I agree Moorer was better than Ibragimov, his chin wasn't. Neither is Holyfield power anywhere close to Foreman... but I may be wrong since I forgot about his deadly headbutts ;).

KILLS a former world Champion in the ring in 2 rounds
loses ONE match, and then falls off the scale?
I would've LOVED a Drago movie
Even if He Man & Punisher did suck balls
Well he did turn his back on the Politburo if u remember. I'm sure he had a stern talking to after the fight if you know what I mean. Wikipedia says he was 100-0 as an amateur. Not bad. :bbb

We can't give up faith, find it where it was lost, search anywhere, portents, signs, follow them to the edge of within. I often think about the hereafter when he owes no more to the future and can be just a man but now he is to be that very stuff of future memory, a fair time that cannot be forgotten and because it cannot be forgotten, that fair time may come again, what was and the dream of what could be - the future will take roots in the past and it will be done. Hallelujah!
