"I just have to get back in line"
By Donna Ritchie
"The fight went to a decision and Ibragimov won the decision and I just have to get back in line and it doesn't mean that it's over," Evander Holyfield told reporters via telephone from Moscow following his loss to WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov. The former four-time champion said he will assess his performance after he actually sees video of the fight and he'll take into consideration what people say about his performance in the ring. "Did I do so bad that it's not worth it for me to try?" Evander also stated that he was surprised Ibragimov moved as much as he did and which forced him to change his game plan. "I didn't throw enough combinations as my corner wanted me to but he [Ibragimov] was quick in the sense that I didn't feel comfortable in throwing the combinations." As for a body shot in the tenth round that appeared to cause some discomfort, Evander admitted, "It was a clean shot, it was a clean shot but it didn't hurt me. It made me draw up but not to a point...it was a very good shot."

It's very sad when fighters tarnish their legacy with delusions of being able to continue fighting well beyond their expiration date. You can almost understand it if it's because they are broke and are looking for a payday. But by all accounts Holy is rolling in cash. It really makes you respect guys like Lennox who go out on top with their health and dignity intact.

Sad shit. This will only get worse for Evander and could end in real tragedy if he keeps fighting.

I bet without all the streess from the public hasseling this guy he would do even better....It's gotta be wearing to deal with all these washed up 35 year olds that say life ends at 35.......for the 45, 50, 60 year olds that dog the guy.....you wish you could walk around the block let alone have the energy and desire to train like he does.

Let him live his life.

This is sad - he can do what he wants to do, but I don't want to see him end up like Meldrick Taylor.

interesting, I saw a fight recently where the 23 year old got his head taken off (you know what I mean) and no one said he should quit....no one, they just said he got caught. I bet if that was evander the commision would strip him of his license and that is WRONG.....

If he's cleared by doctors that he's fit to continue, by GOD let the man continue. :good He's doing what he loves and is making alot of money doing it. He's not punch drunk or rambling on as, say Bowe does.

Holy seems to have his wits about him still, and he just lost a decision to a world titleholder. Nothing to be ashamed of.

If he wants to fight, I say let him fight. :good

He's like Dracula, you have to put a stake in his heart.

Interesting that the historical person Dracula was based on was an Eastern European named Vlad III the Impaler (Vlad Ţepeş) in common Romanian reference; also known as Vlad Dracula

If Holyfield fights Wlad the Impaler Klitschko he might finally get that stake through the heart.

i will guarantee that we will see a fighter, either mma or boxer, fight competitively in their 50's within ten years.... just wait and see.

Expected this.

Holyfield will point to hurting Sultan in the 12th and the fact he managed to go the distance as proof that he can hang with the 'big dogs'. The fact that he lost so many rounds, looking slow and shipping free shots doing so, and was fortunately in there with someone looking to fight tactically rather than go for the old guy's jugular, will be glossed over.

Love ya Holy, but please call it a day now. This title shot was a gift, now it should be your last.

The same bloody mindness that got him to the top in the early 90s against the odds; is the bloody mindness that makes him think he can still achieve his goals he stated.

The problem is the casual boxing supporter will buy a couple more meaningless wins as a sign of a revival, and will be giving it the maybe this time when Holyfield gets his next big bout.

Its sad to see such a great fighter who doesn't realise its over. The only thing that will come out of this for Holyfield is the tainting of his great legacy.

The only thing that will come out of this for Holyfield is the tainting of his great legacy.

Holyfields health is the concern. Sure it hardly helps Holyfield's legacy, but much like Ali (with Holmes and Berbick) it may leave a bitter taste at the time, but as time goes on you start to remember the fighters brilliance as memory of his sad end fades.

Wlad should just let Holy fight him then purposely quit on his stool...lol so Holy can be the champ one last time. But have a immediate rematch clause so he can get the title back with ease.

SOMEONE NEEDS MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

If I was any of the other champs i'd be on the phone to Holyfield NOW trying to make a fight. Easy money and you would give him more reason to retire.

Holyfield will end up like a retard with this kind of thinking.

The mans a fucking warrior, but sadly that means he just doesn't know when to stop. Mind you, the version of Holy that turned up last night would crucify the one who fought Donald.

If there was a over-40's heavyweight title, Holy would be undisputed.

holyfield should fight bowe again.

These are really the ONLY sorts of matches they should let him fight - other washed up world class fighters like himself.

I've long favored the development of a "Seniors Tour" in boxing - something which could provide an outlet for these older fighters to compete, without exposing them to as much risk as if they faced younger fighters in their prime.

Let Evander fight. He can still become the oldest man to win a heavyweight title. He hurt Ibragimov a couple of times in round 12 and if this fight would have been a 15-rounder he could have won it.

Donald is 40, McCall is 42. So Holy wouldn't be undisputed.

It should be illegal.

Plus I have a horrible feeling Ruiz might be able to actually stop Grampa Holy this time round, and Ruiz TKO Holyfield should not happen in any sane universe.

This doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. I don't think Evander will stop until he gets carried out of the ring horizontally.

He's been finished for a long time, but he continues to make money and -- more to the point -- he continues to make money for other people, so don't look for it to stop anytime soon.

The people who know and care about Evander should do everything they can to convince him to retire. He's headed down the same path as Ali, Louis and other greats who couldn't stay out of the ring. Very sad.
