why are people saying he gets hit way too much....now andrade, he gets hit way too much...but the baby bull has some alright defense considering his style...hands up high, nice head movement that never stops, and only leaves his face open when he unleashing a flury of punches.....

what do you guys think about his defense...:huh

Diaz has poor defense but makes up for it with relentless offense.

I think natrual Lightweight power puncher could derail Diaz.

I don't think he's got a defense, he stands in the pocket, and he throws a lot.
Keeps his hands up high, which reflect a lot of the punches that are thrown at him, but he's standing in the pocket where not much damage can be done to him. Basically, he's in your chest all night long, he makes a puncher brawl.
There are good punchers out there that throw short hooks, uppercuts with brutal force, that can stun Juan.

He gets hit, sure.. but he's got balance and stance to take the final edge in your powerpunches away.

With that style, Diaz is sure to get hit. But that taken into account, for an offensive fighter I think he does a very good job keeping defense in mind. Of course he's hittable, but certainly nothing like an Andrade.

He got the type of defense that won't carry him in higher weights against harder puncher that can break through his guard. He have a winky wright type defense that gets beat up by his own glove or people who shoots down the middle. Is good defense if he can hold off his opponent's punches.

I agree, he does enough defensive wise to get the job done. At the same time, he knows his opponent won't hurt him.

Uh, lightweight. He moved down to 130 for the middle of his career, but he was a natural lightweight :deal

Besides, what natural hard hitting lightweight do you really think could beat him? Katsidis? Is there another natural lightweight who hits hard? Katsidis is pretty raw and almost lost to a journeyman and a prospect - you really think he could win?

Juan "D" is decent....his Offensive Volume and the PACE allows his Defense to seem better than it is. Juan's "D" is mostly his offense. He gets hit more when he's not throwing than when he is trading.

Diaz has a good defense as far as I'm concerned. He keeps his hands up high and tight when on the inside and he can duck and slide under punches whenever he needs to. He'll always get hit more than a Mayweather type boxer because of his aggressive style, but for his style his defense is great IMO.

Very True.:good

For such an aggressive pressure fighter, Diaz has very good defense. He keeps his hands high on the inside and has decent head movement.

Diaz has very good defense for his style of fight. Most fighters would dream to give 8 punches and take 1 in return in a trading situation. When he sticks to his jab and doesnt open up he does not get hit. That is ridiculous.

He is good defensively, yet people mistake an active offense for a bad defense. If PBF fought as aggressively as Diaz I can guarantee you would see him being hit more also. He keeps his guard very tight, utilises good head and upper body movement in close quarters and certainly doesn't just try to walk in through their punches. Probably the only thing he does do is punch a little bit widely at times, which can leave him exposed. He was doing this against Freitas at times.

A natural Lightweight CAN'T move down in weight. he made 11 title defenses of the WBO superfeatherweight title.

Katsidis can not make the 130 pound limit at all, do you know why? b/c he is a real lightweight.

Lennox lewis is a natrual heavyweight, he would not be able to move to light heavyweight.:deal

I would take Katsidis over Juan based on styles.

He hasn't got an amazing defence nor is he THAT defensive minded. He keeps his hands high and can mix it up between parry, moving, blocking, slipping etc

His defence is good.

I left a post right after the fight saying his defense is what impressed me most.

When you get hit only 20% of 800+ punches, your doing something right. And Julio Diaz is normally a fairly accurate puncher.

:good

I think they automatically think, because of his swarming, high output style, that his defense is lacking....which, history tells ya, it SHOULD!!! But that was what impressed me most Sat. was his movement and shell defense are actually excellent. If he was more of a counterpuncher and not a swarmer, it would be more evident.

His defense isn't great but it's more than sufficient for a fighter that's at leat 90% offense.

I'd say it is no more underrated than his jab is.

Yeah he's good. He doesn't get hit a lot, may seem like it on the inside, but everybody takes shots in close. Juan moves his head and comes forward and after a while his opponents don't have the power they had to start with and eventually they stop throwing altogether...

Sure they can, they're just weight drained every fight. If you can fight while you're weight drained, then great, but there are a lot of boxers, even good ones, who fight below their natural fighting weight, because they take enemas or sweat off 15 lbs on the day of the weigh-in. If your ring weight is more than 10 pounds heavier than your weigh-in weight, then you're not naturally at that weight. Unfortunately, only one of the sanctioning bodies actually enforces that as a rule, which leads to having guys like Josh Clottey gain 25 lbs on the day of the fight.

you know Clottey was weighed with clothes on for the corrales fight. he talks about in an interview after that fight on BTalk. i understand what your saying to an extent.

for instance miguel cotto would never have been able to fight at 135. and he started his career at 140.

His biggest problem is getting hit AFTER he finishes throwing punches. His defense is fine otherwise. He's not PBF, but he's not Gatti either.

He does leave himself open when he opens up, and starts throwing multi-punch combinations, but, on the whole, Diaz does quite a good job of avoiding punches while moving into range, and has proved himself to be increasingly effective at counter-punching.

His "D" will never be airtight, but it's not really a liability, esepcially when compared to other aggressive fighters.

Julio threw over 800 punches and only landed a hair above 20%. For a swarming, high output fighter, that DOESNT use his jab (which Juan actually has a good one of....too bad he doesnt throw it..), that number is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL!

I thought Juan did a great job in that fight, countered well. Sues, If you would have said he landed 20% of 400, more or less, I would agree. He threw 800 punches in fight that didn't go the distance. 8 full rds, to be exact. I see that as getting hit a lot.

His defense is decent, he doesn't need much defense with the kind of output he has...but he does get hit by the jab a little too much.
