Just Curious. I can't stand Ruiz but I'm wondering if this fight was a little closer than people say it was. I never really got the chance to watch it.

you can pretty much watch the whole fight on youtube just type in John Ruiz or Ruslan Chagaev. I really think it was a very close fight, hence the split decisions, there were times when Ruslan did good and there were times when Ruiz did well also. They both actually did real well against Valuev though. I really do believe Ruiz beat Valuev and I for one call on a rematch between Chagaev and Ruiz, because the first fight was so close, also I believe Ruiz was robbed against Valuev of his title and therefore deserved an immediate rematch after their fight. It never materialized but I think Ruiz in his last fight, though with a B-class fighter, showed a desire to actually fight anybody. I think Ruiz might be the only one out there right now willing to fight anybody. He has actually for years been the one heavyweight no matter how boring he was, that was willing to face everyone, even in their home turf.

Very close, Ruslan struggled with Ruiz's style which everyone does.
Sometimes it was depending on what your liked as Ruiz was a bit busier and do better on the inside, whilst Ruslan landed the better more noticable shots from the outside.
I had it for Ruslan but it could have gone either way because in majority of the rounds were very close.

Some rounds were pretty close, but there was no doubt who was the rightful winner of that fight:Ruslan Chagaev.
A pretty close fight, but to say that this fight could have been either way is nonsense.Only totally incompetent ring judges would have scored it in favour of Ruiz!
The fight was relatively weak in dramaturgical moments ,however, the fight itself was quite entertaining.I had never seen a fight with Ruiz before which could have been called fun to watch.
Chagaev vs Ruiz was better than most fight fans had expected before.

I had it 6-5-1 for Chagaev, but it was very close, and you could give it also Ruiz, but IMO Ruslan deserved the win because he was simply a bit more active and landed in general the better shots...

How does Ruiz manage to fight these guys who are supposedly worlds better than him to a virtual standstill?

If you have to ask, you've never seen John Ruiz before.
Ever try swimming in quicksand?

I had it 116-113 for Chagaev, I can't see how Ruiz would have won this fight...

Chageav won clearly.

Ruiz "fights anybody" because he HAS to. He can't draw flies to a funeral, so he needs to be paired with other fighters who draw people in - beyond those few like me who would watch to see the cheater get knocked the f*ck out.:yep
I really don't get how some boxing fans give this talentless palooka respect for fighting opponents, when he cheated against the vast majority of 'em by holding excessively or faking "low blows" - and in so doing, not only cheated his opponents of their opportunity to win WITHIN the rules, but cheated the FANS of the legitimate boxing matches they PAID to see.

Yeah his low-blow acts are some of the most blatant I've ever seen. The Kirk Johnson low blows were the worst and he got Holyfield and Thunder with the same shit.

I thought the biggest injustice was when he fought Golota, Golota floored him 2 times and beat him up IMO, yet they gave the decision to Ruiz for some reason. I watch Ruiz fight for one reason, his goofy as manager stoney. Wasnt that Stoney who went after Valuevs manager and got dropped, hes enertainment not Ruiz.

Don King - it was his power that got Ruiz his undeserved ranking and title shot in the first place, and allowed him to get away with all the illegal tactics to "win" a title.
Now, Ruiz gets fights primarily because he is a "name" opponent who is very beatable. Notice how, ever since King dumped him, he hasn't "won" a fight.

you sir, have an apparent hatred for Ruiz which blocks your viewing a fight from a neutral point of view. I have read some of your posts about Ruiz and you write with such passion that it really cracks me up. You hate this guy but can seem to stop writing about him, you type paragraphs about him, you need to get a life. You need to leave the past in the past and move on. I for one don't like Floyd Mayweather Jr. but I can see his fights and admit when he does good and bad, without letting my feelings for him blurr my vision of the truth, I suggest you do the same. Don't even waist your time writing back with an assault to me or with a long post to "prove" me wrong, because you will not get an answer back, don't expect me to write back to any of your hatred filled comments. Thanks.

I think i had Chagaev by two or three rounds ahead. There were some close rounds and Ruiz did very well early on, but Ruslan won a decisive decision in my opinion. Ruiz didn't hold that much by the way. From round 8 he did it somewhat because of tiring but it wasn't that bad. It was a pretty good fight in fact, a lot of close combat during the early rounds. Ruiz has an ugly style but in this fight he showed he CAN be pretty good.

What I "hate" about Ruiz is the corruption that accounted for a talentless clubfighter like him holding a "world" title illegitimately for so long. You may approve of the use of rigged rankings to get title shots and illegal and disgraceful tactics to "win" fights, but I do not.
All the critcism that Ruiz receives from me and other fans of LEGITIMATE boxing is MORE than justified.:yep

You've always been spot on about Ruiz. Before he lost his belt, everyone agreed with you as well. I don't understand how because he's fought a whole lot of people and has lost some close decisions erases the facts we know in hindsight and know from historical Ruiz incidents.
It's as if he's become a somewhat cult figure in his absence from stinking up the division.
Pathetic. I'm always with you on this one Zak.

I can't understand it really. It's like some boxing fans have developed a case of amnesia about just HOW bad Ruiz was, about HOW blatant the cheating and corruption that accounted for his "winning" fights and getting title shots was, and about what a fraud and disgrace it was to have a mediocre regional fighter holding a world title on false pretenses!
I will continue to try to set the record straight, as it is bad for the sport for this kind of charade to occur. It would be like having the Tampa Bay Devil Rays win the world series letting them play with corked bats.
i think i did a round by round for this fight.
from what i remnember 0of my scorecard, i thougyht most rounds were pretty easy to score.
i gave most of the early rounds to chagaev who outboxed ruiz
then in the middle rounds chagaev took his foot of the peddle and ruiz fiddled and outworked chagaev and then at the end chagaev came back and put his stamp on the fight.
chagaev by about 2 from memory , but it was clear her was the better more classy boxer, juyst for some inexcusible reason he went to sleep in the middle.
