Welcome man in the ESB and nice to meet you, and i will wish all the best in your careare.

Ask your trainer did he was with Cuba nationalship team in the former Yugosllavia state with his team in the city Sarajevo and Pristina because the national team of Cuba was in the preparation for olimpic games , i think 1976 it was long time ago . If he was i can go to look to amateur boxing federation of Kosovo to found something if they have in the archive.

Hi my friend:
im a cuban fan(in USA since more than 10 yrs),Emilio Correa was one of the greatest boxers in cuban amateur boxing-exeellent counter puncher, would lay on the ropes and suddlenly deliver hell to his opponent,i believe his son is currently on the national team. Its a shame we are missing so much potential at pro boxing because of cuban system.

hi Art, yep he told me went to Yugosllavia and he really liked it there very much. he said it was a beauitful city...

and kid cubano, yep emilio still has those tools to poll off those moves off and has a very interesting way of punching.
here is something most people don't know but he did fight as a pro, after he left cuba in i think 79....he did very well had a victory over iran barkley, and a draw with davey moore where he was sort of robbed...he fought under another name...had a great record but getting into a car crash and he stopped fighting....
i saw him spar a pro guy like a year old, and emilio took him to school....

Most fans who try to get pictures and information about Soviet era boxers will have a very difficult time. Soviet media was very restrictive in what it published. As for contacting retired Soviet boxers or their associates today, my impression is that they are reluctant to share too much information about themselves or their associates. I guess it's a cultural thing.

There was a Russian guy on this forum not long ago with whom I discussed this topic. His name was AK47, or something like that. That guy told me that under Soviet times, there were just a couple of official newspapers circulating, and the boxing news was very basic. He told me there was nothing in the USSR like the boxing magazines that have long existed in The West. Thus, information about the best Soviet guys tends to be rudimentary.

Do you know otherwise?

I never said that. The point I made was that there was no equivalent to western boxing mags, more sports periodicals like Soviet Sport. But boxing was one of the main sports at the time and boxers were celebrities, so there are enough articles about them in Russian. There are plenty of pictures of these guys as well, and there is footage available (the Russian amateur boxing federation has a great series uploaded about the Soviet greats for example, though they're all in Russian).

I would like to study these Soviet sports magazines. Can you give me their names, especially the ones where I could see Soviet fighters from the 1970s? Also, what is the URL where I can see the films of the Soviet greats?

It doesn't matter that the URL is in Russian; I can translate through google.

Go to Rusboxing.ru - the national amateur federation website. look in the literature and video section - a wealth of information.

Any prime Vysotsky photos? I remember the hard punching southpaw when I was a kid. He had a reputation of delivering a KO blow with either hand from any short, medium or long range. I think Vysotsky had over 100 wins.

Were you kid in the mid to late 1970s, when the Soviet squads were shown regularly on American television? Some of their fighters, such as Vysotsky, were celebrities with the American sporting public. Vysotsky fought numerous times on live television, here, I think always on ABC.

I've been trying to research the young Soviet heavyweight Viktor Ivanov, but I keep running into dead ends. Ivanov appeared on ABC television several times in 1975 and 1976. American media agreed he had the making of a great future star. But mysteriously, Ivanov's career took a nosedive late in 1976, when he was only 20 years old. Amazing.

It's too bad Vysotsky's 1976 knockout win over Teofilo Stevenson isn't available. It was widely reported in the American media in the spring of 1976. A real shocking upset, as Stevenson was overpowered, on the run throughout the fight, dropped twice, and counted out.

If not for his susceptibility to eye cuts, Vysotsky probably would have represented the USSR at the 1976 Olympics, and won the gold medal too. How unfortunate.
