Is Oscar De La Hoya the most exciting Non HW boxer of his generation? Was he even the most exciting figher in or around his weight class?

He was the greatest fighter of the late 90s (when Roy Jones was dominating a boring & weak Light Heavyweight division) but wasn't the most exciting.

His fights made the most electric/exciting EVENTS.
As far as most exciting/entertaining fights, no.
Overall the entertainment level of his fights are alright, nothing special.

Who was more exciting in the 90's when DLH was around? I can name a few, but would love to see the answers of others.

The most exciting fighter from 1995-98 was Arturo Gatti. Then when 2000 came around, Erik Morales took over, and probably passed the torch to Manny Pacquiao somewhere along the line.

If we're talking about the quality of their fights, then Terrible Terry Norris and Tito was alot more exciting than Hoya...
Im just listing the junior middleweights.
Ahh, the underrated Terry Norris.

Mundo, BewareofDawg and Relentless think Oscars a lot more exciting now than he was in the 90's. The internet photos recently really made them excited too. You know, kinda a common bond there, everyone excited and stuff. They love everything about their guy Oscar. It's that special kind of love (I think you know what I mean  )

Roy Jones
Felix Trinidad
Gatti''s fights were exciting as well
Delahoya is not all that exciting in my opinion. But to each his own
De La Hoya vs Mosley 1
De La Hoya vs Vargas
De La Hoya vs Mayorga
De La Hoya vs Chavez 2
De La Hoya vs Gatti
De La Hoya vs Camacho
De La Hoya vs Quartey (especially rd 12)
All were exciting fights.

C'mon. The second chavez fight they were going toe to toe. De La Hoya started fighting Chavez' fight to prove he can infight and JCC was having a bit success in that round but De La Hoya finished with a sick uppercut!

The hype that surrounded his events was second to none. He usually fought against other well known fighters. He had charisma to fuel the hype behind the fights...
Beyond that, most of his big events were anti-climactic. With few exceptions (Mosley I, Vargas, Ruelas) the performances were disappointing. So...NO. He was not the most exciting fighter of the 90's. Take away the hoopla, take away his celebrity, and just look at the fights...not a hard call to make.

Overall, DLH's big fights in the 90s (and 00s) was of a decent entertainment level. He's not especially exciting but not consistently boring either. The magnitude of the event helps make his fights more suspenseful and enjoyable when you see it when it happens.
90s:
Rafael Ruelas: good performance, explosive 2nd round KO.
Genaro Hernandez: decent, kind of tactical.
Jesse James Leija: DLH kicked his ass, the fight was alright.
Darryl Tyson: refer to Leija
Julio Cesar Chavez: the first fight was decent and overall a let down due to the cut. The rematch was a pretty good fight. Oscar gave Chavez more chances and fought more aggressive, so Chavez got some offense going, but Oscar overpowered him.
Miguel Angel Gonzalez: this was a pretty enjoyable fight with DLH jabbing the crap out of MAGO.
Pernell Whitaker: dull fight, although it was very close.
David Kamau: refer to Leija and Tyson.
Wilfredo Rivera: the fight was alright, DLH fought very well and dominated Rivera unlike other top fighters such as Whitaker, Mosley, and Vargas.
Hector Camacho: I haven't seen this one in years.
Patrick Charpentier: refer to Leija, Tyson, Kamau. This was a pretty bad mismatch.
Ike Quartey: 10 of the 12 rounds were a posefest. The replay value is pretty shitty, but it was at least suspenseful as it occurred.
Oba Carr: pretty good fight as Carr did better than expected.
Felix Trinidad: huge letdown
Derrell Coley: pretty good fight, DLH was aggressive and beat Coley up.
Shane Mosley I: excellent fight on a high skill level.
Arturo Gatti: entertaining beatdown.
Javier Castillejo: this fight sucked. More Castillejo's fault though.
Fernando Vargas: I liked this the best out of DLH's fights. Some others liked the first Mosley fight.
Yori Boy Campas: ehh....a sparring session with Yori Boy being a punching bag.
Shane Mosley II: so-so fight
Felix Sturm: The dubious decision kind of overshadowed an entertaining prize fight.
Bernard Hopkins: pretty dull.
Ricardo Mayorga: entertaining ass-kicking.
Floyd Mayweather: so-so fight. While it happened, it was enjoyable (IMO), but the action level makes the replay value rather low.

what wasn't?
What wasn't exciting about DLH fighting Camacho and Chavez?
Well, it had a little something to do with both men being a decade past their primes when DLH fought them, and both fights being foregone conclusions.
If you like seeing mismatches, then I suppose these fights must have been thrills for you.

What a brave performance to stand toe-to-toe with a geriatric. Where was he to stand toe to toe with someone his own age, like Tito for instance?

You're a hater. No one said anything about brave. We're talking exciting. He fought and beat JCC at his own game thus making the fight very exciting to watch. Have you seen it? He could have easily outboxed him and KO out in the latter rounds but opted to slugg it out with the slugger.

Yes I have seen it, I saw it live when it happened, and no I wasn't excited. I knew Chavez was going to gas out. Hey it happens when you're TEN YEARS PAST YOUR PRIME. That DLH was even taking him on at the time was an insult to fight fans, and it was even more insulting that he resorted to "beating Chavez at his own game" when Chavez was a shell of himself and couldn't well employ his own game.

Geeze even Michael Nunn was more exciting.

Okay now
First Chavez did not gas out, he was coming on very strong but went into his corner with busted up ribs and a busted up lip. He quit because quote: "My ribs are hurting, My ribs are hurting me".
So Chavez Primed out at 24 years old? Niggie please! Sure he wasn't at his peak but he had defended his WBC title 5 times after losing to Randall his first loss and then lost to DLH his 2nd loss. JCC was the champion of the world when he fought DLH in 96!
And last, the only insult to boxing are fans such as yourself who hate on fighters who risk their very own lives to entertain your ass.

-Morales
-Barrera
-early-mid 90s Tyson (past his prime, but still,)
Entertaining:
-Roy Jones
-Hamed
You have no clue, do you?:-(
No clue? Well then, let's see Mr. Boxing encyclopedia, give me a clue.

:patsch
Chavez was hurt, but when would a prime or even a near prime Chavez quit from being hurt? Heck, Chavez was even quitting years earlier against Randall, proving how far past his prime he was by the DLH fight.
And Chavez prime was at 26 years old, in 1987 when he beat Rosario. This fight took place when Chavez was 36. TEN YEARS PAST HIS PRIME.
As for mentioning the 96 fight, Chavez was champion only because he had robbed Frankie Randall of a deserved victory.
As for me hating on fighters who risk their lives to entertain me, I'd much rather DLH risk his life to entertain me against someone who has a chance of beating him. As I mentioned before, when he fought someone his own age, Tito, we saw how willing he was to risk his life to entertain us.
I rate Gatti and Morales ahead of him in terms of excitement, as well as Benn.
But I probably rate him as the greatest from the 90s.

Funny how Oscar had no quarrels with giving Chavez a rematch, but when Quartey and Whitaker came knocking after his gift decisions he was no where to be found.
Yeah that's because he was more interested in providing exciting fights for us, like fights with Camacho and Chavez :rofl
