I had no idea Frank Maloney was a trainer before the Johanneson - Gomez fight last night.

Does anyone know if he ever boxed, and who he has trained before?

Im sure he was a fighter, dont know if he was amateur or pro.

Didnt know he was a trainer till he was described as one last night!

Frank fought as an amateur.

but has he trained any good professionals before? is maloney qualified to be training a british championship level fighter? he must have done something right because johanneson looked good last night...although that could be down to his own attitude after his recent defeat

He looked good, but only after a shaky first round. But I put that down to him being intimidated by Gomez, rather than any poor coaching. When he loosened up & got into the fight though in the second, there was only going to be one winner.

Before he went into the management/promotion side his background was in training.

He began training boxers and organising amateur bouts before he was 20 and became a pro trainer in the late 70's.

I think he is a top promoter and deserves a lot of credit as his bills are usually packed with really competitive fights which is great for fans.

Frank Maloney does put on some great shows, seeing him in a tracksuit was slightly strange as he usually wears a suit so it seemed a little weird. He would look great in his tracksuit running up those steps in Rocky to Survivor's 'eye of the tiger'.

Im sure he trained Ricky Gervais in BBC celebrity boxing a few years ago. I think he also said in the show that he trained Danny Williams and i think he said lennox lewis at some point too.

There are two things I particularly remember him for.

One is being Lennox Lewis' Manager and also when he ran for London Mayor a couple of years ago - lets just say he is quite a character!

Didn't he train Danny Williams last time around? He did a better job than anyone else has ever done with the Brixton Buffet-muncher: finally we saw some consitent head-movement and (shock!) conditioning.

Judging by the Johanssen fight, Maloney is a good trainer who keeps it basic and focuses a lot on conditioning/fundamentals. Sort of the "anti-Stewart", since Manny is good at complex strategies but has trouble getting his boxers into shape and tightening up the basics. Remember the stuff Maloney used to shout in Lewis's fights? "Hands up Lennox! Hands up!" If Lewis had listened to him more often, he'd have beaten Hasim Rahman.
