Muscle weighs more than fat.
You lose an amount of fat from your body, your muscles grow a certain amount, you will gain weight.
Depends how much you eat, too.

Yes, most the time when people workout seriously for the first time they first start off losing weight (fat), then will start to gain some weight after in muscle.
Then after awhile it balances out.

your diet affects your weight more than anything else
you can train like a mad man, but if you eat a heap of junk food you can still gain weight, and not just muscle but fat too
Of course to intentionally gain muscle , you have to eat a lot of high quality food especially protein

Water weight, food eaten, regular diet changes, going to the toilet and time of day are just some of the factors which will effect your weight.
Weigh yourself first thing in the morning for a week and work out the average, don't just go by what the scales say for one day.
thing is even though i have gained 3 kgs, i look in the mirror and i don't feel like i have gained, i have joined the gym and have been doing alot of excercises. I am not sure if gaining muscle is the right thing at this stage, how much does it effect your speed?

dont worry about muscle slowing you down. it would take years of heavy weight training and eating an insane amount of food for you to gain enough muscle to become slugish.
ive been lifting for years, gain a few kgs, not much, and my speeds better than ever. Its when i stop lifting that i seem to slow down.

Doing tons of cardio won't.
