He was one of the most physically fit heavyweights of all-time, yet he never seem to be chizzeled even at his lowest weights. I assumed this is because of a problem of taking off bodyfat similar to Don Cockell or Buster Mathis, but at a smaller scale. Was this true? Discuss.

I know he was hospitalised soon after the FOTC for hypertension, which he'd been slowly developing over time. However, I think his shape had partially to do with the fact that he's a naturally podgy person. He was morbidly obese before taking up boxing; really, it was an amazing accomplishment for him to work his way to being one of the most well-conditioned heavyweights ever.

This is a good question, CM. I would think probably not as he would tire quickly if he had hypothyroidism - or an underactive thyroid, which is the weight gainer in thyroid disorders. I never noticed a Frazier that got tired.

I've never read this idea directly discussed, but I know Joe was very fat before he took up boxing, and actually, according to some accounts, started really training because he was sick of being made fun of for his appearance. It doesn't seem implausible, then, that he at least had a very strong natural tendency towards producing body fat, which is why he never looked quite "ripped" even when in almost inhumanly good condition. Not sure about a thyroid problem specifically, though.

As we know Frazier originally went to the gym to lose weight ,wether he had thyroid problems I dont know ,but if you look at his thighs around the time he fought Mathis you might well beleive they had roids in them!

Some fighters naturally carry more body fat than others. Usually the fighters who carry excess weight are prone to having stamina problems. Frazier wasn’t on of them. While Frazier was never chiseled, he was certainly in great condition.

Frazier's life before boxing was spent working hard on a farm. Some believe this is where he built up his stamina and work ethic.

Joe's legs were like tree-trunks. As for his weight I think the reason he was heavy was probably due to his diet, alot of fat and carbs. In his prime when he beat Ali, he was only 205, in 1976 for the Foreman rematch he was 224.5, the same weight as Big George, but he was 4 inches shorter.
