Chagaev to return in May?
Monday, October 29 2007
By Alexey Sukachev
WBA heavyweight titleholder Ruslan Chagaev (23-0-1, 17 KOs) of Uzbekistan will be back into the squared ring in May, 2007, says the vice-president of the Uzbek Boxing Federation Donnier Ergashev through the SportReport media portal. According to Mr. Ergashev, the agreement between the champion, his promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl of Universum Box-Promotion, and the local sanctioning body was reached recently during the meeting in Tashkent, Uzbek capital. The fight will most likely land Chagaev’s Motherland at still unclear venue in May, 2008. The exact date and the future opponent will be announced later. Mr. Ergashev also confirmed that Ruslan’s title would be at stake during that fight and that the corresponding approval to move Chagaev’s deadline for mandatory defense to the summer of 2008 was received from WBA representatives. Rumors are held that Chagaev could next face one of three Ukrainian WBA-ranked heavyweights – Taras Bidenko (#5), Wladimir Virchis (#7), or Alexander Dimitrenko (#10).

LOL at bolded part.

Looks to me like he wanted out of a title unification so he could fight a lucrative easy opponent before his mandatory.

Boy oh boy is this a trend...

I think Chagaev is fighting Michael Morrer in May.

Moorer is ranked 6th in the WBA.

Some good comments, thus far. LOL

Yes, I gotta agree. May is rediculous, seeing as how they already said he was over his illness and was ready to start trraining weeks ago, as I recall.

Chag can piss away his title reign holding his title hostage, and then finally coming back, only to fight someone meaningless.

At least he's not retiring and he's an exciting fighter so I don't see what the problem is.

He is a good fighter, who had one of the most exciting fights of the year with Valuev this past April. I cant wait for his return, the heavywieght division needs exciting fighters like him and Peter.

Why May? because thast would be the perfect timeline to avoid Wlad wouldn't it?. If Wlad fights in Feb May would be the best bet to avoid him.

This guy seems to be losing his fanbase, real quick. After suddenly taking ill and calling off the unification fight that they were so proud of, then announcing, immediately after Holy was put in there, that he (Chag) was OK and ready to resume training......now, announcing that he won't defend the WBA title til...............May...............seven MORE months, on top of the time he's already been out.......

I think if a guy goes more than a year without defending there should be an interm title fight, this is B.S, the guy will have gone 13 monthes after winning his title and hasn't done shit!!

Word is out that Bidenko will be Chagaev's next opponent.
Chagaev flew back to Germany to attend a fight event with Bidenko watching Bidenko attentively throughout his entire bout with George Arias.

Dimitrenko isnt ready to fight for a world title. He is scheduled to square off against huge German Timo Hoffman next week.
Some British posters here claimed that Skeleton will meet Dimitrenko to fight for the vacant european title.

Virchis is scheduled to fight Hawkins on the undercard of Dimitrenko vs Hoffman. He has relinquished his european belt.
According to some rumour he may be Wladimir Klitschko's next opponent.
Sultan Ibragimov vs Wladimir Klitschko isnt a done deal, and Virchis has been mentioned as one of the possible opponents for Wlad's next outing to a box ring.

Bidenko isn't even in my Top30. :-(

Can't belief he'll get a title shot. Virchis would be muuuuch better.

Isn't the idea to make as much money as possible in any fight? If I were Chagaev's manager I would be trying to get him a fight with Klitschko. There isn't much point to holding a belt unless it generates some revenue.

I still have my doubts about him being too ill to fight Ibragimov, though.
