Of course anyone is free to comment. I know the main function is to rank fighters as best as possible and get an accurate representation for ESB. However, I was wondering if we should expand a little and perhaps vote on a Fighter of the Year award along with a Fight of the Year award. Comments would be helpful....comments about the thread mind you, (yes Capfunds, we know we're all gay bitches:deal)

after all the big fights then people should talk about that. ( after dec. 8 )
It wouldn't be until then anyways. But being that the only vote prior to the last vote of the year is coming up, I figured I should get the idea out there now and see how it floats.

For fight of the year, I would certainly be looking at Marquez vs Vasquez.

Other than that, I would have very little to add to your list.

Good idea, KG. Even if there would/will be FOTY threads, it would only be prober to have one spot to gather it all.

So far its been a great year.

Yeah, there would have to be a proper thread. This is just to see if everyone thinks it's a good idea. I should have had a poll.

amonsot-katsidis was an early FOTY pick but i think it does not deserve it now. montiel's last title defense is also worth mentioning IMO

Added a poll, you can vote for more than one option obviously.

This is a hard year, no fights as of yet stand out for me but If I was nominating three fights of the year to this point, not in order.

1. Cotto vs Judah - good back and forth action with Judah landing heavy shots early in the fight, Cotto slowly taking over and finishing

2. Berto vs Estrada - great fight by Berto, unleashed all the shots in the book, never say die attitude by Estrada but it just got too much for him

3... hard one, but for the upset value and the way the fight was delivered by Gomez - Alfonso Gomez vs Arturo Gatti

Upsets of the year.

1. Pavlik vs Miranda - no one mainstream expected Pavlik to win that
2. Mijares vs Arce - completed unexpected, Mijares showed his class
3. Darchiniyan vs Donaire - having dominated his brother before hand, that shot that put Darchiniyan out was a beaut.

Honorable Mention - Pavlik vs Taylor.

KO of the year

1. Donaire, perfectly timed overhand right, catching Darchinyan as he swarmed in, putting him down and out
2. Our very own Ding, coming back from behind with a huge left hook to put Nwodo out
3. Pavlik vs Taylor - crisp right hand, catching Taylor flush and then pushing him back and stopping it with good hard punching

Fighter of the Year - (currently)
Hard to pick..
1. Floyd Mayweather Jr/Ricky Hatton - whoever wins, both have fought legends this year in Castillo and De La Hoya, two undefeated young, hungry lions
2. Miguel Cotto/Sugar Shane Mosley
3. Kelly Pavlik, two upsets, features in KO of the year as well as upset of the year

Rising Star of the year
1. Povetkin - although you can argue he was a rising star in 2006, 2007 has made him, with performances over Bostice, Donald and Byrd putting him in the frame for a big 2008
2. Gamboa - Cuba's rising star, performing against tough competition in a very short timeframe
3. Pavlik - although not a rookie, a big year which has seen him take the middleweight title, as well as beat two hard contenders outside of Taylor

Taylor wouldnt really count as a KO, the ref stopped the fight before he even hit the canvas and he was not out. Ding's, now that was a KO for the ages.

Yes, of course...good idea...why not add "(promising) young fighter of the year" too?

Thought it might be too much. So many promising young prospects that don't get seen.

Not to mention, we would have to decide what a prospect actually is.

I have only seen Gamboa once. Need to see him more because from what I saw....WOW.

The only reason it might be a good idea to have "young fighter/prospect of the year" is so that we can all have a look at whatever young prospect striked someone as interesting, so we can start following their career from the early dawn;)

The fight of the year should be Marquez-Vasquez II. It was a combination of Barrera-Marquez (the best technical fight of the year) and Pavlik-Miranda (top level brawl of the year). The match was between two true elite fighters who both showed a lot of heart, toughness, and desire to win. It was a great mix of boxing skill and toe to toe brawling with great back to back action and a 3rd round that should probably be the round of the year.

In second place I would put Taylor-Pavlik just because it more than lived up to its hype, unlike many big fights. Also, it had a shocking moment in the 2nd round that no one could imagine, which was followed by a comeback knockout win against the recognized champion of a division.

It's been a great year though and the next 2 weeks will make it greater. :hat

The leading candidate for Fighter of the Year is of course Kelly Pavlik. The winner of Kessler-Calzaghe should get consideration, more so if it is Kessler. Andrade is a much better win than Manfredo.

Mayweather is a legit candidate, especially if he impressively beats Hatton, but I'm one that believes in pure ring achievements to be what matters, so Mayweather winning the richest prize fight in history means less than say, Kessler beating Calzaghe if that were to happen. Calzaghe is a full-time fighter and SMW champ, while Oscar is a skilled bigger fighter than Floyd, who had also fought just once in the previous 32 months. Mayweather-DLH was a bigger money event, Kessler-Calzaghe is the bigger, more significant boxing match.

If Hatton beats Mayweather w/o controversy, then Hatton is a lock for Fighter of the Year.

The best fights of the year are Vasquez-Marquez 2 and Taylor-Pavlik.

Knockout of the Year, this one is tough. Here are some to consider:

Wilson-Nwodo
Sprott-Harrison
Donaire-Darchinyan
Abraham-Gevor

Added a poll, you can vote for more than one option obviously.
And I think there should be added more even.

Upset of the year.
Rookie of the year.
Comeback of the year.
Gift decision of the year.
Surprise of the Year(a fighter that has been operating under the radar, with incredible skills or the like).
