You said the other day " Tim Witherspoon was also knocked out by a middleweight in sparring."
A few of us are keen to get the scoop.

To paraphrase Benjamin Disraeli-there's lies, damn lies and statistics and sparring stories.
I know a knowledgable guy like yourself wouldn't put much stock in gym fables like these but it never ceases to amaze me how much interest sparring stories generate.
Tony Ayala's entire myth is based on one.
Amazing::?

Janitor made the claim as if factual, personally i think it will be garbage. If however he somehow pulls a rabbit out of the hat i'll be that little bit more educated lol

Burley KO'd "Violent" Ray in sparring!
He may have been a natural light-middle by that time. Does that help?
There's also a (unveryfied) story about Burley KOing Walcott in sparring. He did spar with Joe for Charles, and he was fired from the camp, but there isn't a proper source on this one.

I don't know anything about a Witherspoon being knocked out by a middleweight, but Tim was definately a sparring partner for Gerry Cooney. Cooney's team got rid of him when Terrible started giving him a terrible ass kicking.

Fair enough but I don't think it detracts from Witherspoon as a fighter even if it did happen,as it was just sparring.
Just like I don't rate Oliver Mcall highly because he apparently gave Tyson a decent tussle in the gym,it's what takes place in a real boxing match that counts.

Exactly, the same with some idiots who rate Greb only because of his little sparring-video at youtube (and because of that not high)... :yep

Never knew Burley Ko'd Elmer Ray I've heard that the Walcott story is false apparently Burley daughter said it.

That's what I have too.
I actually wrote up the whole story concerning Ray, it occured in a crowded gym and was most dramatic.
But I opened that thread before the big crash.

Agreed, its like berating the career of Tyson because he was floored in sparring against Greg Page, shortly before the Douglas fight.

Yeah.
I'll base my opinion on Greb on two minutes of goofing for a mounted camera and completely disregard his 300+ fights and umpteen victories over fellow hall of fame fighters.
To me that attitude shows no respect to the old greats or indeed the sport of boxing and is indicative of an arrogance towards the pioneers of this sport.
To them boxing began with the likes of Ali and what came before is irrelevant.
That attitude sucks to me :fire

He consitently argues that Patterson was ahead against Ali in their 1972 contest when he's been told about 10 times what the scores were. Even one time when he did it, I corrected him and then even stated that he'd do it again. Which he did (last week). :yep

Sad but true.
Reminds me of all the stories that came from a certain place *cough* America *cough* that Lewis was "knocked out cold" by Jeremy Williams while film shows that he was judo-thrown down because Lewis kept dominating him with combinations in front of the press.
This is why i don't trust any of those stories about old-timers. People wrote stories full of shit back then because the film wasn't available for 99,999% of the people or at funny speed, so why not describe a 37 year old 15 pounds overweight horrible boxer as a muscled, cut super-athlete in peak condition who would take a sledge hammer on the chin for $30? (a poster actually seriously believed this:nut). Of course when the film is watched, an entirely different reality becomes apparant.

I understand that Lewis has been knocked out by the world and his wife in sparring.
Things stranger than fiction do happen in sparring from time to time however. In this particular case I hope that I might be able to locate a source.

If you don't even have the source what possessed you to make the claim mate? Not trying to ride ya, but man that's a big statement to make based on absolutely zero, or so it seems. Did someone else make the claim, and you keep repeating it because you like the idea of small man ko'ing big man and fits your general fancy?

What difference does it make? The important thing is that the guy performed well in the ring, which is when a fighter needs to. Lot's of guys get floored or dropped or hurt in sparring.

"If I can find the source".
I think Janitor will say he emailed Witherspoon and this was Tim's reply. It'll be a few typed lines on word saying:
Dear Janitor,
Following on form your e-mail I have to answer that you are indeed correct and, yes, some guy, whose names escapes me, did knock me the fuck out before the Super Greg Page fight. He must have been only, oooohh, 155 Ib when he was soaking wet.
Yours faithfully,
Terrible Tim Witherspoon.
ps. Your friends at ESB don't no nuthin'. Those little guys hit much harder than Bonecrusher. You can tell them that from the me.

Another thing I believe Tim would ad to that letter is:
I would also like to address the fact, that any middleweight, welterweight, lightweight or featherweight, who fought prior to 1950, would have knocked the livin' shit out of me to. Both my WBC and WBA belts in the 80's were fake titles, and my best opponents were absolute crap in contrast to any fighter who fought in the first half of the century. Hell, I think Jack Roper would have kicked the crap out of me.
Sincererly,
TTW

I agree, but that comment made by Conteh was funny nonetheless, even it was a bit nasty in nature. Anyway, I concur that Janitor is a good poster.

But I occasionally feel that you are too ready to use your barbed wit as an offensive weapon. That can be hurtful to some people. I can't help thinking that the Classic forum should have a higher level of common courtesy than is displayed in the lounge or general boxing forum. It doesn't have to be the debating equivalent of a a bear pit.

Well just to close off this thread Janitor is full of shit on this one. Granted he is a fine X-factor in here (the forum wouldn't be the same without him) and puts loads of effort in but that still doesn't change the bottom line here. We all know by now if we're going to make huge claims in here we'd better be sure to back them up.
If anyone thinks i've been unfair they need to get a firm grip. It's a grown up boxing forum. He invited me to start the thread.

You're looking "very silly" already, you made the claim and don't have a semblence of where it came from. I'm just guessing someone posted it, it suited, so got implanted in the memory bank. As did the Tucker - Hearns comments. There'll be no looking silly on my part in any event. The little man beats big man gets you a little too excited, but hey, we all have our vices. Mine's along the lines of underperformers like Greg Page and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
