If I remember right, Cooney had a glass chin?
In a battle of punchers, especially guys like Shavers and Cooney, the better chin wins.

Hmmm...
I'm reminded of Quarry v. Shavers
It was a first round KO...by JERRY QUARRY.
But that really doesn't mean anything I guess.
Point is, Shavers isn't invincible.

Shavers' beard - as others have remarked - wasn't the greatest either. Basically, this fight is a question of who gets their big bomb in on the other guy's questionable whiskers first. My bet is it'd be Shavers.

I remember that Shavers had a weak chin, I just wasn't so sure about Cooney. I know that he's basically a left-hook brawler, fought Foreman way past his prime, got owned by Holmes, etc but I don't remember if he had a good chin or not :D

Whoever lands a flush, massive powershot first would win. A 50/50 fight - both guys could win.

Truthfully, it's hard to say just how "bad" Cooney's chin was. He was brought along VERY carefully by an over-protective manager (promoter Dennis Rappaport) and then thrown to the wolves with Holmes. He stood up for 12 rounds with Holmes, although Larry wasn't exactly a heavy hitter. I suppose his rep for having a bad chin comes from getting knocked out by LHW Spinks and then laid out in 2 by Big George, but the truth is that, by that time, he has a pretty serious booze and coke problem and was, at best, only a part time fighter.
Basically, it's hard to say how good or bad Cooney really was. His handlers didn't bring him along properly, and then after he got beat by Holmes, he was never the same.

Cooney by knockout.
Shavers could punch sure, but his head was always right there for the uppercut and hooks inside. Cooney would let those uppercuts loose and probably get a knockout early, inside 4 rounds.
