According to Interbox he's making his first defence of his IBF title at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
No opponent named as of yet.
Safe to say it'll be some bum which will hopefully set up a Kessler or Lacy matchup.

One thing for sure. It wont be Big Joe Calzaghe you rather fight old timer Hopkins for the big cash $$$

I would be disappointed if he fought someone outside the top 15 at SMW...and very disappointed if he fought someone outside the top 20...(and I don't mean according to the IBF rankings either...). But for his first voluntary defence, given his inexperience and serious flaws which take time to correct, I don't expect him to take on someone in the top 10.

Yea obviously, thats what I said.
I expect him to fight some bum (which he's deserved) which will then set up a match HOPEFULLY with either Lacy/Kessler/Mundine/Froch or maybe the Miranda vs Pascal winner ?

I wouldn't exactly call someone in the Top 15-20 a bum...at least not in the context of Bute fighting him in his first optional defense...although if Calzaghe were to fight someone in the top 15-20 next, I would...
...to me a bum for Bute would be someone like this guy: (and I am no hater!)

Bute will not fight Pascal in 2008 and probably not even in 2009 - they are both the diamonds in the crown of their promoters and they will not be risked against the other...unless it is after some of both their shine will have gone, to cash in on both...But Bute better fight at least two Top 10 fighters in 2008...I am assuming that both Tsypko and Andrade/Lacy would fit the bill here...if he does, fair enough...beating 3 Top 10 fighters in his first 24 fights (Bika is in my Top 10 too) on top of Berrio, I would be happy with...and so should everyone.

haha ive just noticed that guy you've linked to is fighting Mundine.
Another farce of a defence for Mundine.
Bute shld fight a top20. Then try for a unification against Mundine.

I cannot remember who it was who pointed out that Mundine cannot unify given his present status (WBA supermiddle weight champ). Only Joe can unify the WBA title now because he is the WBA Super Champ.

Basically, as far as my understanding goes, unless Mundine somehow convinces Bute to give him a shot at the IBF or, unless he works his way up to become a mandatory for a title shot for the other belts, he cannot get his hands on a title that can lead to unfication...and thus, he would not have a chance of fighting the best. In my view, Choc has, sensibly, given his position, decided to concentrate on LHW in the future, though I wouldn't be surprised if he makes a break for the MWs either...

Can you please stop with this bullshit? You're making Bute's fans sound stupid. Posts like these make people hate fighters.
Pls stop!

I'm thinking the winner of Sanavia-Haussler or Stjepan Bozic if he wins his next fight.

I think BUTE has a good chance against KESSLER, whilst Mikkel is fast and powerful, he's str8 up and 1 dimensional.

I just watched the press conference and they mentionned names like Andrade, Sanavia and Stieglitz.

Hell yeah, I beg for Bute vs Andrade, It would be a great opportunity for us fans to really see what both fighters are able to do. In my eyes Andrade in mentioned way to rare, when people talk about good fighters at smw...
Have not seen much with Bute, but I have a feeling he is a rising star and so is Andrade... Then the winner could fight against the winner of Kessler vs tune-up guy:good

Yeah, I am pretty sure that they are trying to get Andrade rather than Lacy because Andrade was Kessler's most recent and notable win...it will be interesting to compare how they do. Stieglitz they might consider to "prove" that Lucian would beat the man who beat Berrio too...although I see no point, really...
The rest, I know less about...maybe Maxime will tell us more...:D

I'd like to see Bute against:
Mundine
Inkin
Tsypko
Lacy
Braehmer
Andrade
Zuniga
Miranda
Allan Green
Stieglitz
There are plenty of worthy opponents out there. No excuse for fighting a bum in his next fight

I would like to see Bute against those guys too...but Bute needs to improve too - he needs time to develop. Otherwise, he'll never be better than very good. If he fights a bum in February, this would not help him get better...he has a year to make the step us...he needs to use it wisely...but thinking that he will fight Inkin or Mundine in Spring is completely unrealistic...you see that, don't you?

He has been inactive for so long that he is de facto retired.

Didn't Joe say he going to Light Heavy? That would mean he vacates his titles, and Mundine would inherit the full WBA strap.
So him and Bute could unify, from my understanding.

Perhaps you are right...I don't know...maybe someone will clear this up...can Choc INHERIT the full WBA strap just because the Super Champ vacated it, or would he have to fight a mandatory first to get the full belt?:think

I'm just going off what happened last time. He beat Antwun Echols for the "regular" belt, while Ottke had the full version. Ottke retired, and Mundine inherited the full version. I don't think he'll have to fight a mandatory, they should make him though IMO.

If joe drops his WBA belt, Mundine becomes automatically the full WBA champ, just like Sturm became the full WBA champ when Taylor droped his WBA strap.
But as of now, Mundine is only the WBA regular title holder and can't unify.

People in mtl know:
Andrade (because he won against otis grant)
Beyer (because he won against Eric Lucas)
so we have to consider that those two could bring a lot of people in the Bell center. :think

Andrade puts a lot of pressure and Bute's has not looked very confortable against people who put pressure in his last couple of fights so I think Andrade could caused problems.

Agreed. Adrade also hits like a mule and Bute's average power might now be able to keep him off all night.

This is only partially true.
Yes Mundine beat Echols for the regular WBA title while Ottke was the champion. Then he became the full flesh champion when Ottke retired, But he lost that title to Siaca who lost it to Kessler who unified it against Beyer.
Then Mundine fought Soliman for the new regular WBA title because Kessler was the new super champion after his unification of the WBC and WBA title.
All this is confusing as hell I know.
