The big problem with Calzaghe coming to the States is, no matter how much he's offered, he'd make more in Britan. Now, we're talking professional boxing here, and usually professionals go where the money is.Kessler got a fair shake, scoring wise, and Hopkins lost two squeakers to Taylor in the US, so does the venue really matter that much as far as decisions go? I've seen some really bad decisions in the US and everywhere for that matter.
So if Hopkins really wants to fight, he should call British Airways, or just STFU.

Pray tell, why did Calzaghe say he'd fight Hopkins in the US???

When Hopkins came back, I understood it was for three fights.

He beat Winky. Calzaghe will be next. After that, I'm assuming he'll give one last effort to angle for a fight with Jones.

Hopkins beat better fighters? hahah who?
Put Tito and DLH in one ring with Calzaghe and he would kill them. Come on DLH will fight at WW again, he is a small motherfucker compared to Hopkins. @MW he was just a little boy, and should have lost against Sturm, a average contender.
How good Tito is you could see against WW.
Fuck Hopkins fought only undersized guys and a shot Tarver. he is fucking overrated. But he is very smart so he will duck Joe like he did years ago.

Hopkins has defeated three men who were universally recognized as top ten pound-for-pounders when he fought them--arguably top five.

Calzaghe has never fought anyone with that distinction--ever.

1. there wasn't a so called p4p-fighter in the SMW for the last 10 years

That's the whole fucking point!! Calzaghe has never faced the type of elite opposition that Hopkins has!

2. Tito was p4p, and Winky but both guys are smaller than Hopkins by far. Again Joe would also beat Mayweather, but is this impressive?? Tarver war shot a his performance against the Albanien-guy showed how shot he was.

Tito was middleweight champion when Hopkins fought him, and Winky was universally recognized as a top five pound-for-fpound pugilist. He and Hopkins were both recently had fights at 160 prior to this.

Nice try, bucko.

Lack of confidence??

Phone him up and ask him why he agreed to fight Calzaghe and the 24 hrs later demanded double the amount he`d previously accepted.

Hopkins wouldn`t last 6 rounds against the great JC.

Wilson, that's really not the way that went down. There are two sides to every story, but I doubt even Joe C. wouldn't agree with the way you characterized that situation.

I wanted to see this fight at first but now I hope it doesn't happen. Calzaghe has only a couple of good fights left and I don't want one of them to be ruined by a fighter that clinches three times as often as he punches. He would hold on to Joe like a crying wife sending her husband off to war.

I'm assuming the ones you did here about were all American, no?

Hopkins has beaten p4p'ers yes. But ODLH, Tito are a lot lot smaller than Hopkins. Tarver is way overated because of his wins over a SHOT RJJ. The win by Hopkins was impressive because of the jump in weight and his age, NOT because of the calibre of opposition.

Then he beats Wright, a natural Light Middle and you go crazy for it? Yes, the wins make his resume a lot better than Joe's, but he has never beaten a fighter of the calibre of Calzaghe. When he fights JC, which he will, you'll get to see this:hi:

Someone needs to be honest to Hopkins and tell him he's not an exciting, crowd pulling fighter. He repeatedly put me to sleep during his fights.

And he's way too old to beat Calzaghe at this point. I'd still like to see the fight because a lot of people here believe Hopkins would win. But it would be wiser for him to price himself out like he did against Jones and feast on welterweights.

Didn't the guy who used to run Showtime boxing say that Hopkins accepted a 3 million offer to fight Calzaghe, then backed out and came back demanding 6 million?

Anyone got a link to that quote?

Not saying it happened, but if the guy said it, I'd take it pretty seriously.

What? like Tarver? And I don't want to hear any DeLaHoya/Trinidad nonsense. They weren't even genuine middleweights, let alone SuperMiddle/Light Heavies.

My hunch is that Bottler Bernard will veto the match up by insisting on not giving Calzaghe pay parity

I feel there is going to be a lot of arguing on this matchup. Americans vs Europeans.

First, Lacy was going to destroy Calzaghe with one punch, then Kessler was too young and Strong for Calzaghe and would whoop his ass. And now, Popkins is going to ass rape him at 45? (Because it won't be in 2 weeks).

Is it for patriotisism that you guys think Hopkins would win over Calzaghe?

If I could fast forward all this arguing, I can't wait to see the comments on this thread after the fight.

Hopkins was too old and would have beaten Joe when he was younger.

If they can come to terms then the fight will be made! Hopefully Joe will continue to trend this way in terms of FINALLY stepping up in competition instead of ducking any real form of competition. This fight or any other ELITE fighter should have been on Joe's resume a LOOOOOOONG time ago. He's now itching for real respect that has been avoiding him like he's been avoiding real challenges. Not that Joe doesn't have the skills and talent to be competitive or even beat the best of the best...he just hasn't shown the desire to test himself until he reached the at of 35. If this fight is made Joe stands a great chance at beating Hop.

Bernard has only faced one fighter who was superior to Calzaghe.

And he lost, decisively.

With both men at prime, this would have been interesting , with the edge going to Calzaghe.

At this point in their respective careers, I don't think this wwould even be competitive.

Bernard has never fought at 168.

At 175 he is 1-1-0.

As someone living in Britain for a long time I have to step in. Is Hopkins a boring fighter? I'd say so. Is he likely to lose against JC in a fight right now? Most likely.

But fuck me, how can he and his achievements be disrespected by British fans? The guy is 43 years olds and still fights top level opposition. He has fought some exceptional fighters and has never been scared of anyone. In terms of being in with high quality opposition, JC has quite a way to go before he can compare himself to Hopkins. Show some fucking respect to a great champion, still fighting at top level and in great shape at such an advanced age.

I do believe this fight will be made, seems like both guys want it.

to be completely honest not only do i think that hopkins would lose badly to calzaghe, i also think he would get KOd against kessler who could easily move up, i think that there are better fights out there for joe, this will beef out his resume and it will be interesting to see how many punches hopkins can take, on points 120 - 110 to calzghe, this would b a repeat of the jones jr fight only, hopkins would take much more of a beating because he is not a patch on the fighter who fought back then.

Defensively, Winky is (was?) very good. But he's a 154 lber who has never won a fight above 160.

Offensively, Trinidad is (was?) very good. But at 147 and 154. He has only two wins at 160, one good win against Joppy and one against welterweight Mayorga.

At 168 or 175, both these guys lose to Calzaghe.

Tarver? Famous in the same way as Buster Douglas or Haseem Rahman.

Not to be mentioned in the same breath as Calzaghe.

Don't even fucking bother with Rumsfeld.

He just puts :smoke at the end of everything, and believes that covers up a complete and utter lack of a valid argument.

Trinidad, Tarver, Winky

:smoke

Yeah, Trinidad, a man who wasn't really a middleweight, is better than an undefeated, 10 year super middle champ.

Tarver. Oh yeah, makes his name from an eyes shut punch, and has struggled since. A comparison to Rahman as a HW is more than fair.

Looked like complete and utter shit against Hopkins.

Winky. Fighting at 170. A HIGHER weight class than Calzaghe fights in. Winky, (who couldn't beat a middleweight champ derided as being shit).
Winky, fighting 16 pounds above his best weight.

That's like Calzaghe fighting a welterweight for fucks sake. That's like Calzaghe beating Mosley, and everybody proclaiming it as a fucking great win.

Seriously, I cannot believe how easily people get the wool pulled over their eyes.

Was Hopkins a great fighter. Yes.

Is he now? Don't know. He's fought a weight drained Tarver (come on, you all know he looked like shit that fight, who is almost 40 himself), and fat, sluggish Wright.

Hopkins is in NO hurry to fight any live, light heavy challenges.

Briggs, Adamek, Dawson, hell, any youngish guy that can crack and fight 3 minutes a round for 12 rounds would cause Hopkins trouble PURELY because Hopkins is what, 43 now?
