Both fighters were landing punches that were not being counted. You would think that boxing judges could avoid bad scoring by just counting the punches landed, but even scoring this way they continue to mess it up. Some things never change in boxing, one being weird scoring in both amatuer and pro boxing.

I can remember a few Egpytian fighters winning totally BS decisons at the last Olympics.

That's simply the way the rules are. In Amateur boxing not every landing punch scores, only "clean" punches. That what this white area on amateur boxing gloves is for. You may like it or not but if the scoring is accrding to the rules, it's no bad scoring. Of course the rules benefit skilled technicians and crude sluggish brawlers might find it difficult to score points because they can't throw a straight punch but this is the way it is. Amateur boxing is a whole different sport than pro boxing.
