Ezzard didn't stay a middleweight very long, and was at his peak as alight heavy. He was great as a light-light heavy...at 171 pounds. But as a middleweight he didn't have the skills to beat a prime robinson. He had some good wins as a middle, but was too green when he was outboxed by the cutie Ken Overlin at that weight and they fought to a draw in the rematch. plus, Ezzard lost to veteran Kid Tunero. He said he "just froze that night. Tunero showed me things he had never seen."

A young Charles would likely get beaten by Robinson - although that's not a dead cert, I mean Charles did whip Burley on short notice, then when Burley came back with a different plan, repeated the feat. But then maybe Burley's just overrated ;)

However, upon a 175lbs clash, Charles trashes, thrashes, lashes, smashes, crashes and mashes Robinson, dazzling him with flashes and dashes, his slashes inflicting multiple gashes and his bashes knocking out Ray's gnashers :cool:

I don't really think the fight would go quite like my elaborate description, though... Charles wouldn't dazzle Robinson, he'd most likely prove to be too big, strong and hard hitting. He was too good a boxer with long enough arms (he definitely outfoxed Burley) to outbox Robinson (who didn't face that many good boxers, and certainly not many elite ones) - if Robinson wants to win he'd have to go on the attack but that wouldn't work either. I'm not confident enough in Robinson's chin (he was stunned or floored on many an occasion - a solid chin, but perhaps not Hagler-like) to say he could take the punches of Charles - who hit far harder than any of Robinson's other opponents. Rocky Graziano is perhaps the hardest hitter on Robinson's CV, but even he couldn't punch like Ezzard, and certainly not with the same delicacy and delivery. In a pound-for-pound sense you may be able to argue that Robinson was better (but it wouldn't be by much - Charles was a genuine virtuoso at his peak), but at light heavyweight he wasn't good enough. One argument that people use in Ray's favour is the Joey Maxim fight (where Robinson was beaten anyway) but that's invalid; the 'he only lost because of the heat' claims don't wash with me because Maxim was conserving himself in the same conditions and not fighting to his full potential as he would in say, the Irish Bob Murphy fight that I have on tape. Aside from that, Maxim was not nearly as good as Charles, who beat him five times cleanly.

At 160lbs I could see them splitting a series with Ray winning 2-1 Charles was very inexperienced at middleweight he was only 21 when he fought Burley at light heavyweight it would be another story.

At M/W... Srr all the way... take away the heat, humidity and physical difference in question whilst fighting Maxim at LH/W... a well prepared, and heavier SRR would be a better contest for Charles, then he appeared for Maxim.

Charles had the style to accomodate that of SRR.... no chasing, no running... a well contested bout... even inside a 12 ft ring.

Interesting read guys, Im almost done with Armstrong, I think Charles is next on my list of `must see more of` ATG fighters followed by Monzon.

Ps. a fight at 175 between Charles & Tunney would be a bit special me thinks.
