Charles by KO in 8 or less rounds. Tarver is way out of his league here.

I pick Charles to beat a peak Tarver by decision.

These questions are never pointless.

You can hear a nuget of info about one fighter or the other, hear opinions on style clashes, learn about rule clashes from the point of view of the respective eras, loads of stuff.

Watch this thread fill up with members who exhibit a fetish for Charles. For then, Charles is a superman who would beat any light heavyweight who ever lived.

It will be much more interesting to see you dismiss every opinion without presenting a shred of evidence aside form slagging of his opponents - "he was shit, he was shit, he was shit, he beat him, but he was shit, there was a war on, everyone was rubbish..."

The only thing that stopped Charles from winning the Middleweight title was WWII. He was at LT.Heavy just long enough to beat Archie Moore 3 times KOing him once when nobody else would fight Moore. He won the Heavyweight Title in 1949 defending it 8 times. He is also the only man to go 15rds with Rocky Marciano .I'd say thats a fair Resume.Charles KOs Tarver middle rounds

Tarver bothers Ezzard with his reach, southpaw jab and awkward left early. Once or twice, we'd see a very clear scoring punch by Tarver in the first 3 rounds. Then Ezzard finds the right, and knocks Antonio the fuck out.

Charles takes this one, although he might have been troubled by tarvers height and reach early on.

On the one hand, yes, I'd take Charles but this isn't that ridiculous. And to the Charles by easy 1st KO style predictions...who has knocked out the now 41-year-old Tarver exactly? ...Who, now?

How many times has Antonio Tarver, as good as he is, relatively speaking, fought someone on the level with Ezzard Charles...the man esteemed by so many as the greatest lightheavyweight champion of all time in so may lists here in this classic forum? No, Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins are not the correct answers. Ezzard Charles would have stopped Tarver in 10 rounds, a clean ko.

Charles ud. Tarver might make a good showing.

You kind of made my point for me. Because Tarver was never in with a Charles, and has still not been stopped at 41, it's silly to be saying Charles is going to steam roll him. What reason do you have, based not on Charles but on Tarver for feeling that Tarver is going to be clean kayoed at his best? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Tarver is in the same league or even the league behind Charles. I'm just saying the guy is a smart, tall, durable boxer who hasn't been stopped in any way shape or form and it's not as if Charles didn't go the distance many times in his career and against lesser men than Tarver and at light heavyweight. Whereas we do know for sure that RJJ, Johnson, Dawson and Hopkins couldn't get him out over the course of several years and fights. I guess I just don't understand the logic of such a sure prediction.

Exactly.

"Pointless" comments are approaching General forum stupidity.

Coming into a thread just to say said question and thread are pointless. Fucking BRILLIANT. Original too! :-(

What a surprise I haven't been here at all in the past month plus. :verysad

Relatively young like when he was 31 years old, knocked down and decisively beaten by Eric Harding?

well , i guess it was before his prime
maybe a part of tarver's problem is that he was never young.

I agree with that. I don't diminish what Tarver has accomplished despite the obvious handicap of starting his pro career at a rather late age. However I do not believe he's quite on the level of Ezzard Charles, skill-wise or resume-wise. The southpaw style, height and solid punching power may trouble Charles but the weaknesses in stamina and ability will keep him from actually winning.

Charles winning by KO is not so outlandish as it may seem to some, Ezzard could really hit and he was much more capable than the likes of Glen and Reggie Johnson, Eric Harding who were all able to trouble Tarver. Tarver has a solid chin but it's mostly his defensive style that has kept him from being knocked out. He also hasn't faced that many big punchers.

That pretty well sums it up for me...and I'll go further and say that Charles was in a different league from any lightheavy of the past 20 years.
